The HighPoint RocketStor 6414AS 4-Bay Mini-SAS RAID Enclosurefeatures four hot-swappable bays to deliver data quickly and reliably using your hard drives and SSDs. These bays support 2.5" and 3.5" drives that come with a SATA or SAS interface. You can mount NAS or Enterprise drives up to 8TB in capacity. Once drives are installed, the hardware RAID PCIe 2.0 x8 host adapter lets you configure these drives into a RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, or JBOD mode. To support the fast reads and writes, the enclosure utilizes a Mini-SAS connector that provides a single SAS 6 Gb/s lane for each drive and offers a total bandwidth of 24 Gb/s. Furthermore, the PCIe-based adapter card comes with a second SFF-8088 port that can connect to another RocketStor 6414AS or a LTO drive.

To manage the fast data, Highpoint has equipped the RocketStor 6414AS with ARM-based processors along with 512MB of DDR3 cache memory. This set of hardware features helps minimize the impact on your Windows, Mac, or Linux-based system. For cooling the enclosure and drives, two 80mm fans are onboard. A user-friendly web-based management interface is available to configure, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot RAID configurations and individual storage devices. Advanced Management features are also included so you can configure email alerts and manage the data in the 6414AS remotely, via an Ethernet connection on your computer, while outside the work environment.

The RocketStor 6414AS utilizes high-performance Mini-SAS connectivity to directly support up to 4 SAS/SATA hard drives or SSDs in a RAID storage configuration. The Mini-SAS connector delivers four 6 Gb/s SAS lanes to provide a maximum data transfer bandwidth of 2400 MB/s, which is a suitable solution for business or mission critical Workstations that require highly sustained storage performance.

The RocketStor 6414AS is suitable for RAID 5 /6 storage applications that require maximum sustained performance. Built-in hardware RAID, dedicated ARM-based processors, and 512MB of DDR3 onboard cache memory allow the RocketStor 6414AS to work independently and minimize the RAID operation's impact on the host system or system loads. DV Mode Technology intelligently manages the flow of large data blocks and write-back caching to minimize latency and ensure consistent, sustained high-performance transfers for media-rich applications.

The RocketStor 6414AS has integrated a series of preemptive security measures to maximize storage uptime whenever data is needed. Redundant RAID 5 and 6 protections shield storage configurations from 1 or 2 disk failures, respectively. The RocketStor Storage Health Inspector (SHI) proactively maintains the health of arrays by examining each drive for failed sectors and dynamically repairs and remaps on the fly to keep data available.

HighPoint's Hardware RAID solutions come with built-in NVRAM that constantly tracks in-progress writes to preserve the integrity of data in the event of a drive failure or system crash. These solutions also include streamlined recovery procedures while minimizing downtime. Administrators can initialize or schedule RAID verification sessions that check each disk member of an array for parity consistency. If any parity related problems are found, the interface will immediately rebuild the array to ensure the integrity of your data.

The RocketStor 6414AS features an "open-box" approach to storage, which grants users the freedom to use their choice of SAS or SATA drive from all major drive brands. Users can add drives as needed to meet the evolving performance or capacity requirements of the storage application.

The four removable hot-swap bays support 2.5" or 3.5" SATA / SAS hard drives. Enterprise and NAS drives are recommended for the RocketStor 6414AS, allowing users to tailor storage configurations to meet each application's performance and budget requirements.

Users can use the second Mini-SAS device port to add an additional RocketStor 6414S Tower enclosure for RAID expansion or a LTO Tape/Library device for archiving purposes.

The RocketStor 6414AS provides many storage expansion options; users can upgrade sub-terabyte single drive configurations to RAID arrays comprised of multiple 8TB hard disks, up to maximum capacity of 32TB. The RocketStor's configurable Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) and RAID Migration allow users to modify RAID configurations or expand existing storage while avoiding complicated and time-consuming backup and restoration procedures.

The RocketStor 6414AS includes a user-friendly web-based management interface available for Windows and Mac OSX operating systems. Novices and experts alike, can quickly and easily configure, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot RAID configurations and individual storage devices—all from a single, unified software suite. Advanced Management Features allow users to configure email notification to inform one or more users of changing storage conditions while outside of the work environment and manage storage remotely via a local network connection.

Related Questions and Answers

[11.6 lb] I have been looking all over for something like this. No I am not a shill reviewer. I am real person living in Nevada County, California. I'm using it on Windows 10. Dang. It's so great. I have replaced my huge desktop with a laptop and this box. If in a few months I discover any surprises, I'll update this review, but so far it's great.

[2x 80 mm Fans] The Box works Fine !

What is clear as mud, is whether SoftRaid ( software ) is needed to use this product.

After digging into this, i came to realize that SoftRaid is a utility program for a turnkey experience of getting the raid up and running.

ALSO, The SoftRaid is not mandatory !!
Windows has builtin ( Raid Management )
and it works fine!

Thank you..

[Aluminum] Every OWC product I have purchased has been great. This is no exception.

[2x 80 mm Fans] I got this to replace an older Blackmagic Multidock 4 uit RAID (Thunderbolt 2), which started to freeze my mac when I upgraded to Monterey OS. BM said they don't support legacy products and weren't helpful. This unit was hlaf the price, and the reviews were impressive, so I got it instead of the BM. I set it up without issue. Even put the 4 SSD cards from the Blackmagic unit in the same order, and it mounted the drive without having to reformat or re-do the RAID drive. Very impresssed.

[250 W] This is my 3rd RAID Tower from Highpoint. I started with a thunderbolt, upgraded to the thunderbolt 2 and now this one. Snappy response and pretty easy to setup, take your time and it’s start forward. B&H was great, I ordered and it was here in two days, safely packed!!! Thanks B&H!

[250 W] I've owned many OWC products and like those, this does not disappoint. It offers very fast T3 connectivity and simple to mount frames for the 2.5 SSDrives. It's quiet enough to keep nearby my audio workstation without disturbing me. And it's a good value.

[512 MB ECC DDR3] I was very impressed. Hooked it up and my G-tech raid drives (from an earlier MacPro system) show up immediately. No reformatting, or trouble shooting.
I had bought a different brand’s PCI housing hoping it would work and Rocketstor even assisted me to trouble shoot since it was their PCI card. My last resort before dumping 20 terabytes in the trash was this unit. I now have those drives thunderbolt daisy chained to new drives that I was forced to buy when my “cheesgrader” macpro blew a mother board. All working fast and great. Avid Editor since ‘94. Very happy with this device.

[11.6 lb] I bought OWC ThunderBay 4 mini because I wanted to have enough RAID storage for my trips to take my laptop, this box, and cameras. I intend to save my video captures there and potentially use the whole system as my video editing workstation. Note that there are two diskless versions of the OWC ThunderBay 4 mini. One comes with SoftRAID bundled (I didn't see this one at BHPhotoVideo) and one without (which I bought here). You will need SoftRAID if you want to create a RAID configuration (I think OWC will sell you one if your box doesn't come with it)

Overall impression: the unit is well built and well designed and can handle from standard 2.5" SATA disk drives to 2.5" SATA SSDs. However, I wish it didn't have a lock. The key in the lock sticks out like a sore thumb. I keep the key in the lock because the only way to close the front cover is to lock it. I'm afraid I'll lose it if I lock it and put away the key. I trust that my family members will not walk away with my SSDs, so there's no need for a lock.

Noise: my work area at home has 35dB ambient noise, according to my Apple watch. When I place my Apple watch near the fan exhaust of OWC ThunderBay 4 mini, I get the measurement of 37dB. In my opinion, this is almost noiseless :-)

Speed: write speed of 1033 MB/sec and read speed of 748 MB/sec according to Disk Speed Test by Blackmagicdesign will handle all my 2160p24 work. Your speed may vary depending on your SSDs or 2.5" disks, cable, etc....
