Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do I transfer photos from my Sony RX10 to the Lacie Rugged Mini? Or directly from the memory cards to the Lacie? I want to use the Lacie as backup for photos when I travel.

A: The LaCie is just an external bus-powered hard drive, NOT a self-powered, card reading backup device. You need to connect the LaCie to a computer to use it. For a fully self-contained portable backup solution, check out the Next DI.

Q: 2. Will i need to format the hard drive to use with my macbook pro?

A: Yes, the drive will need to be formatted. LaCie does include a utility to walk you through the process, and it only takes a few moments of your time.

Q: 3. does this work with the new macbook pros?

A: Works great with the Mac book pro as long as there is a USB port. I dont know about every other computer but it created 2 folders the lacie and a LaCie shared folder (for non Mac computers I believe)

Q: 4. Can it interface with an older MacBook Pro with Type A USB using a cable included with the drive?

A: The LaCie 2TB Rugged Mini USB 3.0 External Hard Drive can be connected to an older Mac but would require a micro USB to USB-A cable.

Q: 5. Does this work with Windows 10 Pro?

A: The Buffalo 8TB DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive comes preformatted for NTFS, making it compatible with Windows systems. A reformat is required to work for Macs.

Q: 6. Would this work fine with a mid-2013 MB Air? OS X El Capitan. I plan to put my LR catolog on it.

A: Yes. The Rugged Mini is compatible with that setup.

Q: 7. I have a macbook catalina OS, I'm very confused about formatting! Which would I use?

A: Hi. Take a look at the LaCie site: https://www.lacie.com/support/kb/how-do-i-install-a-drive-on-mac-os-x-007025en/

Q: 8. will the product work with both Mac and Windows without reformatting? Is there a utility that will allow this to happen?

A: You can set the drive to ExFAT mode to accomplish this after running the Lacie Setup.LaCie Setup Assistant does not prevent you from using your computer's native disk utility program to format your LaCie drive. Simply follow the Setup Assistant through completion, then use Disk Management for Windows or Disk Utility for Mac to reformat your drive. Select the ExFAT format if you want both Macs and Windows to be able to Read & Write to the drive. Please note: A limiation of ExFAT is you can not have a single file larger than 4GB.

Q: 9. If i'm running out of space in my 16tb 4 Bay, do i need a new DriveStation or i can just buy new drives? If have to be buffalo HDD or it can be of a different brand?

A: If you are running a RAID setup then all drives installed must be the same size, so you will not be able to upgrade single drives to a new capacity. Drives used with this enclosure can be other brands such as WD or Seagate, here is the official list of compatible models from Buffalo: https://bit.ly/3yxSnIP

Q: 10. Will this be fast enough to edit 4k video w Premier if my footage is stored here?

A: I would not suggest this external hard drive for editing off of.

[2 TB] Could not have been easier to set up. Loved the software package. Again, easy to use and understand. Comes with raid already to go. If you are looking for a device to safely back up your important files, this is the one you want. Fast access as well.

[2 TB] I was outgrowing my 1 TB external single drives, and it was about time to separate my work projects from my personal. The item arrived quickly, and sported the lovely new electronic smell. Install was a breeze; as I don't have the need for RAID at the moment, I converted the drives quickly to be independent of each other, with one drive making multiple backups of the other. My system doesn't support USB 3.0, so I can't comment on the speed. But I can say USB 2.0 speeds are similar to other external drives, averaging around 20-25 MB/sec, according to the disc tests I ran. 4 months later the drive bay still runs like a charm. It is very quiet, located about 4 feet away from ear shot, and can only be heard when booting up the desktop as the drives spin up. This won't win you any awards for speed if you're doing heavy video processing. For now, it serves my purpose as a drive for my photography business, but I fear as the cameras keep increasing in MP sizes, I may need to update the desktop to either USB 3.0 or something similar, as USB 2.0 is starting to show its age (rendering full size previews of thousands of images can take a long time)!

[ 3.5" HDD ] I received this DriveStation and thought now the chore of getting it up and running. Wrong! I plugged it in, downloaded the software, it started automatically, I put in the password and downloaded three two hour videos in about 45 minutes. I was very impressed with the easy way of use and the speed.

[ 3.5" HDD ] I've been looking for a way to move most of my data off my local hard drive and decided to go with something that could run Raid 1 for redundancy. Setup was very simple and the drive has performed as expected so far. I haven't tried to run any performance tests but moving the roughly 1 TB of data took a while -- which I expected. The only problem that I have is that I don't have a USB 3 port from the docking station for my laptop so am running it on the slower USB 2. It's unfortunate that the DriveStation didn't have other port options but I knew that when I purchased it. We'll see how it holds up but as of now I'd recommend it as a very affordable (and simple) option if you want to run a Raid 0 or 1 setup and don't want a NAS. For my purposes, I wanted something directly connected to the machine and this was the most affordable option I could find.

[ 3.5" HDD ] The instructions and software included make it easy to set up. I like it because it is USB 3.0 and is not very large - so it fits nicely on a shelf.

[2 TB] I needed a redundant way to back-up my picture files. (I just had a hard drive fail) The Buffalo system does it automatically. I had a little trouble setting it up but a call to customer service took care of the problem. Their rep. talked me through the setup and it has worked as advertised.

[2 TB] Purchased my first Buffalo as a Raid 1 storage drive for my photography around 2012. Had good luck with THAT one, so I decided on getting a 6 TB version of the same external drive set up on Raid1, as my older drive was a 4TB raid1 device giving me a net of 2TB of storage, and it was now FULL! So I've activated this new 6TB drive also on Raid 1, which gives me 3TB of new redundant and safe storage capability. I trust the reliability of these external drives!!
