This is a shotgun mic that plugs right into a smartphone's 3.5mm TRRS headphone jack, letting you record quality audio in the process.

The mic focuses the audio capture on what's directly in front of the capsule thanks to the directional polar pattern. It's primarily intended for use with compatible smartphones and devices that sport 3.5mm TRRS connections. The mic comes with a flexible mounting bracket as well as a furry windscreen for achieving a better sound in windy conditions.

With its simple plug-and-play form factor, the mic is perfectly suited for mobile video recording. However, the quality of the mic itself is good enough to be used for VO or ADR when studios are not available; the mic has been used this way in a few television shows.

The highly directional cardioid polar pattern will help tamp down unwanted room noise and ambience.

A rear-mounted, built-in 3.5mm jack works with headphones, or it can also be utilized for backup recording.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Windshield SPECS say Maximum Microphone Length: 6.25 (160.5mm) but NTG2 SPECS say 10.94 x .87 (278 x 22mm) (Length x Diameter) PLEASE clarify because I just placed an order ?

A: I wish I could post the picture I just took. The Windshield fits perfectly on the NTG2. 10.94 is including the section I would call the handle .

Q: 2. Will this work with the Rode NTG5?

A: Its too long for the NTG5 will not fit properly will leave alot of room between front of mic to the front of windscreen need a shorter version like the one below. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/225595-REG/Rycote_033032_Standard_Hole_Softie_Windscreen.html

Q: 3. Does this fit the Rode NTG3 shotgun mic?

A: It fits the NTG2, so if they're anything close to the same size than yes.

Q: 4. Is only the mic right ??? And can I put it an any tripod

A: This one is the spare part of the windshield for Rode VideoMicro & VideoMic. In case you lost the inbox one and need to use it to reduce the wind noise. And you can mount on a tripod if you have flash shoe to attach.

Q: 5. How much better is this versus the windshield that comes with the rode videomicro already?

A: This windshield is identical to the one that comes packed with the Rode videomicro. Don't buy the windshield separately like I did.

Q: 6. Will this work on an iPhone if connected to a lighting cable adapter?

A: Yes, per Rode you can use the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm adapter.

Q: 7. Will this fit a Audio Technica AT8035?

A: . The slip-on design of the WS6 features dimensions that accommodate the Rode NTG4, NTG4+, NTG2 and NTG1 microphones; as well as any shotgun or stereo mic with a length of 6.25" (160.5mm) and diameter of 0.88" (22.5mm). Audio Technica AT8035: Dimensions ø: 0.83 x L: 14.53" / ø: 21 x L: 369 mm Use this one: Rycote Standard Hole Classic Softie Wind-Screen (9.4" Long, 0.7 to 0.8" Diameter Hole, Gray) B&H # RYS24M: https://bhpho.to/35Ns5CT

Q: 8. I use many Rode products and love them. I have the VideoMic NTG and wonder if there is a work around so that I can monitor my video recordings from my Sony 6400 camera. The camera does not have a headphone jack for this and the NTG doesn't have one either for monitoring video recording. Is there perhaps a two out jack where headphones can be plugged into one of the outs and the recording into the camera in the other one? This would be the final thing to make the NTG a mic that can be used by filmmakers.

A: In the scenario described, because the camera does not have a headphone jack, there is no real way to monitor audio recorded into the Sony a6400 Mirrorless Camera from the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone, or any microphone for that matter. Because the connection on the camera is input only, a splitter type adapter would not function to provide a headphone output connection.

Q: 9. How is the shielding on this mic? My original Rode Video Mic Pro picks up RF spray from my Hollyland transmitter.

A: From reviews of the VideoMic NTG, it seems that the shielding is improved over other models. Most reviews state that RF interference has not been a problem.

Q: 10. Does this fit over the regular foam windscreen included with the mic or is made with the foam integrated with the furry similar to the rode videomicro's? Thanks!

A: This has open-cell foam inside to go right over the VideoMic NTG specifically.

[Mono] My husband is going to love this mic for his birding adventures. I’ve tried it out on the sly, and it’s going to raise his ability to capture birdsong quite a bit from what he has been using. He wanted an ultra portable mic because he has really pared down his birding equipment—camera slung over one shoulder, binocs over the other, phone in pocket. He even got rid of his backpack; hence his interest in a mic this size. This is one present he isn’t going to put on his “gift shelf” to molder away in obscurity.

[End Address] That's what people tell me after I plug it into my phone. So, first I start my conversation without it plugged in, then during my conversations I tell my friend, Hang on a sec...how's it sound now. The difference apparently couldn't be more obvious. Fantastic fix for my iPhone 6.

[Black] We have to make little videos every week that don't require high production needs and this mic has been great for getting us audio without an additional set up.

[0.38 lb] I shoot a lot of videos of my 2 daughters (3 & 1 year-olds) with my iPhone, and while video quality is more than acceptable, I didn't like the audio quality, especially in outdoors. With this mic, I get superior audio quality. It may not be too noticeable in controlled settings, but you will definitely see how sound behind the camera is significantly softer. I haven't tested outside yet, but I know its quality because I have been using VideoMicro for some time now. One suggestion is that I wish there was a case for the mic, since I usually carry it in my pocket, and I don't want it to get dirty or dusty in the headphone jack.

[Black] Needed a good mic without extra cables & adding mount. Looks like I got exactly what I wished for.

[Cardioid] This microphone has great audio as long as the phone is in airplane mode. If it is not, any communication over the cellular antennas causes the ticking and distortion other reviewers have mentioned. When in airplane mode though, the audio is clean. I prefer to shoot video in airplane mode anyway so my recordings are not bothered by text messages or phone calls. So, this is no big deal for me. I love the mic and the build quality.

[Plug-In Power] I was amazed when I popped this little gem onto my Samsung Note9 mobile phone. What a difference it makes in recordings, just as the reviews say. Clear, crisp, with a good volume level. I think I'm going to continue using it with the dead cat. It goes on a bit awkwardly, but once it's on, it stays. I haven't used it in a big wind, but by the way it fits snugly, with a small elastic band to hold it in place, I'm guessing a big wind won't be an issue. Great find and reasonably priced.
