The SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 1.33x Anamorphic Adapterallows you to expand your creative horizons, enabling you to capture footage with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on your camera with a 16:9 sensor. This results in an image that out of the camera will look distorted, as if your subjects were stretched taller and thinner than normal. This is easily corrected in post with virtually any modern NLE, creating an image suitable for viewing on wide-screen.

The Anamorphot-50 features adjustable focus marked normal and near. The near adjustment allows you to focus on subjects closer than 6.5' away; setting the adapter to normal allows you to focus on subjects from 6.5' to infinity. It mounts to lenses with a non-rotating front and a front thread diameter of 62mm. Three included step-up rings allow you to mount the Anamorphot onto lenses with 58, 52, or 49mm front thread diameter. SLR Magic recommends that the Anamorphot-50 1.33x be used with lenses that have a front element that is physically no larger than 50mm in diameter.

A 16:9 sensor records an image with an aspect ratio of approximately 1.78:1, and if you want to convert that to a more cinematic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 you could crop your image in post. However, this leads to a loss in resolution and image degradation. The Anamorphot 1.33x squeezes the image horizontally, which creates the classic tall / thin image that must be "de-squeezed" in post. The anamorphic process allows you to capture your image using your entire sensor, so there is no loss in resolution when compared with cropping your image.

The Anamorphot-50 1.33x screws onto your lens's front, providing the classic anamorphic effect. Once screwed onto your lens, you use the push/pull locking ring to align and lock the Anamorphot-50.

The Normal/Near adjustments ring allows you to fine-tune the focus of your lens for shooting subjects closer than 6.5'.

It features a 77mm filter thread so you can attach optional filters, diopters, or the SLR Magic Rangefinder Cine for improved focus functionality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Sorry if the answer is too obvious, but I'm new to focal length, sensor sizes and filter threads. If I got it right, this /would/ work with a GoPro (1/2.3" sensor, less than 35mm) in linear mode (reportedly 19-39mm focal length, but I'm not sure about scaling) with the proper filter thread adapter (probably will need to be 3D-printed). Am I missing something? Do I need anything else?

A: This is a totally customized solution. It may work, but we have no insight in to how to make this happen.

Q: 2. I own the Lumix S. Paired it with 7Artisans 35mm 1.4 lens. Will this work with my setup? Is there additional adapters/components I need?

A: This will not work well. 35mm on a full frame sensor is fairly wide (for anamorphic adapters) thus it will result in a very heavy vignette. We recommend lenses that are at least 50mm for this kind of adapter.

Q: 3. Is this adapter through focus or dual focus?

A: With the SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 2.0x Anamorphic Adapter you focus with the lens first then adjust the adapter focus.

Q: 4. What proportions would this lens yield on 2:3 full-frame sensor, such as the 5D MII?

A: 3.00:1 is our opinion.

Q: 5. Will this work on a Sony 50mm 1.4?

A: We're afraid not. The Sony lens you are referring to has both a filter thread and outer diameter that is too large.

Q: 6. Hello there. Is it possible to use this adapter on medium format cameras? The camera I want to use with fujifilm gfx100.

A: You will not be able to use this with a Medium Format camera.

Q: 7. will this work with the sayang cine lenses?

A: this adaptor will work fro any lens with a front thread under 62mm. because this adaptor has a rear thread of 62 it will not fit onto any lens with say a 77mm thread. its ok to go lower, say if the sayang lens has a 50mm front thread you can easily buy a step down ring to match them up.

Q: 8. Would this lens also cover a 16:9 Alexa sensor with a 50MM taking lens?

A: Yes, a 50mm lens will cover the sensor of any Alexa camera and the SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 2.0x Anamorphic Adapter will not have any effect on the sensor coverage. However, if you shoot in 16x9 and you unsqueeze the image, it will have a 3.55:1 aspect ratio which is much too wide for comfortable viewing. You would have to crop the image and lose resolution. While it may depend on the Alexa model you have, you should be able to shoot in the cameras 6:5 sensor mode (formerly 4:3 Cropped). With a SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 2.0x on a 50mm you will have 2x squeezed image that will pop out to that desired 2.35.

Q: 9. Will this work with the Lumix 12-35mm?

A: With the use of a 58mm to 62mm step-up ring, you can mount the Anamorphot to the Lumix 12-35mm lens. However, consideration must also be given to the shape of the camera sensor when selecting the Anamorphot. On any camera that records video in a 16x9 format, (which includes the GH4, the camera most associated with the Lumix 12-35mm) it is recommended that the videographer use a Anamorphot with the 1.33x squeeze. This creates the 2.40 aspect ratio that most videographer desire. The trade off is there is a loss in flare and other traditional anamorphic artifacts. If you use this one, the 2.0x, on a 16x9 rather than a more square 4x3 video format, the result is an aspect ratio that is usually considered much too wide. See the attached for the 1.33x Anamorphot.

Q: 10. Will this work with: Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L

A: This will depend on the camera you are using in this equation. That camera must have a 4:3 anamorphic mode as this is a 2.0x adapter. Also it will need to be in the APS-C format as this adapter supports focal lengths between 35 and 100mm for APS-C and MFT format sensors. For a full frame sensor it supports 70 to 100mm for full-frame format sensors and the Sigma 45mm would be too wide. If you are within the proper parameters for the camera being used you would then need a 55-62mm adapter, BH #SESURPA5562.

[1.45 lb] As a film student on a budget, I had done plenty of research before committing to this purchase and I am glad I did. I am even happier that this adapter performs even better that I expected it to after reading and watching reviews. The lens flares are a satisfying diamond blue and perfectly horizontal once you have correctly positioned the adapter in front of the lens. I shoot on a Lumix G7 so I had to get a step-up ring to fit the adapter with the 46mm lens mount. I think getting SLR Magic's anamorphic adapter is a better option than buying a full-on anamorphic lens because you are free to attach it to different zoom or prime lenses with different focal lengths and depths of field.

[1.45 lb] My first anamorphic solution. It allowed me a way to satisfy my curiosity about the format. I've used it to shoot to entire short films on my Black Magic Cinma Camera 2.5K, attached to vintage Nikon Still lenses. I've also attached it to my old Video 8 camera and Super 8 Camera to try the format in other formats

[1.45 lb] Quality build and not cheap plastic, which surprised me. It works as advertised. Used it on my 70-200mm canon lens and it worked fine. You'll need a rail system, a sturdy step up ring preferably a brass one, and a lens support bracket to handle the weight. However with that extra weight your camera panning will be smoother.

[1.45 lb] Using the SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter
with my SLR Magic Hyper Prime 25mm T0.95 cine lens (also purchased from B&H) is a really nice combination.
The two really work well together. The images are amazing. For the price you can't go wrong. I find that SLR Magic lens are well made. Its really fun shooting and editing anamorphic content. Presently shooting lumix g9 (purchased from B&H) with latest firmware update.

[1.45 lb] There is no any SLR Magic anamorphot-40 available in rental house near my city, so I was terribly worried that it couldn't fit to my SEL18135 Lens for Sony a6600. Gladly, with a proper step-down ring, it works fine and seems not too heavy for the whole camera set. After a few practices, especially about training myself to de-squeeze the preview picture by imagination, I can't wait to use this baby working on my new short film project.

[1.45 lb] Here is a quick color grading comparison using the slr magic anamorphot 1.33x with Zeiss 35mm Distagon lens on Blackmagic Production 4K camera. https://youtu.be/JRuQX0iRZ8s I liked the slr magic adapter very much.

[1.45 lb] This adapter isn't for everyone but I'm in love. At first I was a bit disappointed with how terribly soft and level of chromatic aberration in the image, but that was because I was trying to shoot way too wide open. When I stopped down to f/7 and higher the image started to look amazing. The bokeh even at f/7 was really pleasant. Using taking lenses that lack focusing hard stops may be an issue though because of the weigh of the adapter. My canon 50mm f/1.4 focus ring will just spin and spin and not able to push or pull the adapter, making focusing impossible. I bought the rangefinder adapter but it wasn't for me. This isn't just a pop and play adapter and takes way more time to get your shot, but I love the results.
