Made to greatly simplify the process of focusing with anamorphic adapters, this SLR Magic Rangefinder Cine Adapter Feet Calibratedprovides a calibrated focus scale, marked in feet, industry standard focus direction, and a cine-style focus gear for your lens set up. When using most anamorphic adapters that mount to the front of your lens, focusing requires matching the distance on the anamorphic adapter and the lens itself; this can cause problems when trying to pull focus. However, when using the Cine Rangefinder, you set both your anamorphic adapter and lens to infinity and pull focus on the rangefinder.

You can use the Rangefinder Cine Adapter to provide accurate focus markings, and using the adapter minimizes the appearance of lens breathing. It mounts to lenses with 77mm front filter threads, and you can use optional step-down rings for lenses with smaller front threads. The adapter integrates a cine-style focus gear, allowing it to easily interface with a variety of optional focus accessories. It allows you to focus your lens or lens/anamorphic adapter combination from 3.5' to infinity.

Works with SLR Magic Anamorphot adapters (1.33x50 and 2x50) to provide single gear ring focusing.

You can use the Cine Rangefinder on lenses without an anamorphic adapter as well. This is useful when working with lenses such as Nikons, which focus in the opposite direction from cine-style lenses, or when using lenses that have neither focus gear nor reliable distance markings.

Using the adapter allows you to minimize the effects of breathing that your lens or lens / adapter combination would ordinarily suffer from.

Once your taking lens is properly set to infinity, the focus distances on the adapter (marked in feet) are accurate and repeatable.

The adapter provides your lens with a focus range of 3.5' to infinity. Even if your lens or lens and anamorphic adapter combination by themselves do not focus as close as 3.5', using the adapter brings the minimum focus distance to 3.5'

The front 82mm filter threads of the adapter rotate as you pull focus on it. This may cause unwanted optical effects when using filters such as star or polarizers.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What taking lenses should I use with anamorphot 2.0X and a full frame Canon 5D MKIII? I contacted SLR Magic technical support and they told me a canon 40mm f2.8 would fit but Im not sure it wont get vignetting. Ive read the B&H specs and they say that lenses between 70-100mm would do the Job with a full frame sensor. Please anyone experienced with a Canon 5D MKIII and the anamorphot 2.0X?

A: For a full frame camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, 70mm or higher is recommended. The statement that SLR Magic said a Canon 40mm F/2.8 would work is contradicting two points. 1. The Canon 40mm f/2.8 is an APS-C lens and cannot be used on a 5D Mark III and 2. our information says for an APS-C sensor 50mm would be the widest. While 70mm seem rather long, remember the 2x widens the angle of view by that much so in effect, that 70mm sees left to right as much as a 35mm lens.

Q: 2. What is the shortest focal lens I can use without vignetting please ? I was thinking about using my old Kiev 37mm f:2 but I'm not sure anything bellow 50mm would suit... Any help much appreciated.

A: That will depend on the sensor on your camera. If you are using a camera that is APS-C or MFT you can use lenses between 35-100mm in focal length. While with a Full Frame Sensor it will need to be between 70-100mm.

Q: 3. the ursa mini pro and ursamini 4.6k now has 3K 4:3 anamorphic mode, with that being said this 2x anamorphot should work with it correct?

A: Yes, it should work if paired with an appropriate focal length as stated by SLR Magic.

Q: 4. Would this work with my canon 8-15mm lens ?

A: Sorry, no. Even if you could mount it, (which is not possible due to the large, bulbous front glass element of the 8-15mm) you would see the inside of the AnamorphotX.

Q: 5. Will this work on the Fuji X series? For example the Fuji 18-55mm kit lens. As it's a cropped sensor would it make a difference?

A: This adapter requires a lens that has the proper filter thread along with the proper focal length and diameter of the lens itself. For APS-C cameras the focal length needs to be between 35-85mm, that lens will have a portion that is not usable. It also requires to have a lens diameter of no more than 50mm and the lens you suggested is larger than that. We do not believe they will be compatible.

Q: 6. What is the rangefinder for ?

A: The Rangefinder simplifies focusing with anamorphic lenses. It provides a calibrated focus scale, marked in feet, industry standard focus direction, and a cine-style focus gear for your lens set-up. You can also use it on lenses without an anamorphic adapter, which is useful for Nikon lenses that focus in the opposite direction from cine-style lenses, or when using lenses that do not have focus gear or reliable distance markings.

Q: 7. Will this work on a Isco 1.9x anamorphic lens?

A: It would depend on the size of the front of the Isco 1.9x lens. Even if we knew the exact lens, this information seems to be unavailable since the lenses appear to be out of production since 2001. If it is 77mm or less (by using step down rings) it probably will work. However, without the two pieces in hand, we are unable to say for sure.

Q: 8. can i stack a diopter on the rangefinder to achieve even closer focus?

A: We are not aware of that being possible with this product.

Q: 9. what's the difference between the 1.33x 40 and the 1.33x 50?

A: 40 can be used with front lens grass with in 40mm and 50 can use with 50mm front lens grass

Q: 10. I'm buying a FS7mkII, will this adapter work for a super35 sensor or will I have to get a 2x stretch?

A: I'm currently using it on the FS7 and FS5 which have the same sensor and the coverage is perfect. It's an excellent effect for the price.

[1.08 lb] This is a great lens if you're looking to have some fun or working on some type of art project. Because its a manual focus, I wouldn't recommend this for a job where you need things to be sharp and crispy. That's one of the great things about this lens - it often brings about a softer image for photo and video because the focus never seems to be perfect.

[1.08 lb] We understand what this adapter does to the image, the squeeze on the picture and the flares and all, so then what's really to discuss here is the practicality of using this on a set.

Considering the anamorphot adapter requires focus adjusting in addition to the taking lens, it's rather impossible to shoot any sort of complex cinema without the rangefinder. One cannot pull or push focus on two elements simultaneously at any level of efficiency - if it's discovered that this is in fact a practice on any set, then the cinematographer deserves both and award and a slap on the head. You see, if the adapter and the taking lens are both pushed to infinity focus, then the rangefinder takes over focusing responsibilities, thus making it possible to use a standard geared focus system to push and pull.

Then, the issue becomes finding a taking lens that can maintain a proper relationship with the anamorphot+rangefinder. It appears that unless using an SLR Magic brand taking lens, the quality of results will vary. The rangefinder includes instructions on how to dial in the perfect focus using any lens other than one of the SLR Magic brand (assuming that lens is of the smaller diameter), though such is to be practiced with discretion. Apparently not all "other brand" lenses match perfectly with the anamorphot+rangefinder. To properly dial in focus, one should apply the anamorphot and the rangerfinder to their taking lens of choice, push the taking lens and anamorphot to infinity, and then focus the rangefinder to exactly four feet away from the sensor of the camera. Here, final focus adjustments to the taking lens are to be made, to achieve perfect focus. Then, so long as the taking lens focus does not move, the rangefinder can take over. Understand that with SLR Magic lenses, this extra step may not be necessary.

Perhaps there's other alternatives, but for the price, this is a legitimate option. Be prepared to baby your rig, but the results pay off.

[1.08 lb] The two together are a great value as the rangefinder by itself is $600 but it this package only adds $200 to the price of the anamorphot. And anyone who has used an anamorphic adapter without one knows how difficult it can be to pull focus, so they really go together. Focusing is precise and easy and the 2x adds a cinematic dreaminess to the images that can only be achieved with anamorphic. I highly recommend the pair and the price is well worth it.

[1.08 lb] I got this lens for its on sale price, which is absolutely unbeatable. I was looking to add a nice ultra wide prime to my bag, and this guy hit the nail on the head.

I've used to on three different video projects so far, one short film of which it was my main/most used lens.

This lens has excellent image quality, everything is very sharp. Other more expensive lenses definitely have that extra crispness in how sharp their images are, but I doubt you'll have any regrets going with the SLR Magic.

This is my first lens from this company. I would definitely buy another SLR Magic lens in the future

[Variable] This is a real gem. I had rented the Nikon 18mm f2.8 lens many times, but this third-party lens performs equally well at a quarter the price. Add in the de-clicked aperture and follow focus rings and it's and even better value.

The only problem I have is that it's significantly smaller than my Rokinon Cine lenses which means having to adjust the follow focus and gimbal balance a lot when I switch.

[1.08 lb] We used this on a shoot only a few days after receiving it, which was challenging but I love a good challenge. It wasn't just any shoot either, a campaign of 3 separate commercials shot over 4 days. We used only this and a Contax Zeiss 50mm prime taking lens, and a canon close up filter between the anamorphot and rangefinder as a diopter, which also worked great. It picks up almost exactly where it leaves off without it, (around 3ft6in) and with it I can focus in at around 6-8 inches! Obviously it's very important that it's aligned correctly, but its easy to tell when you point it at any vertical lines. We used an FS700 into an Odyssey 7Q which did our desqueeze for us, and even has a setting where you can center crop for correct framing for 2.35:1. It's subtle in all the ways you'd want it to be, and has all the elements that just makes things look more cinematic We'll be buying the GH5 and I can't wait to use this with the new photo mode!
