Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can the cold-shoe be removed to mount the Phottix Varos H-Mount Plate? Thanks

A: Yes, the Phottix Varos H-Mount Plate has a stud that swaps out with the cold-shoe very easily.

Q: 2. Only nit is the umbrella clamp is not shaped to firmly hold the smallest shaft umbrellas So does this mean it won't hold umbrellas with the small shaft or that it holds them in a sloppy manner??

A: I was unaware of any thing smaller than 7mm. It is designed to hold 7-10mm. What I really appreciated about the Varos was the curved pad that fit up against the umbrella shaft, I already have a bunch of umbrellas with dents made by my lesser holders. Looking at the pad that fits against the umbrella shaft, it would be a simple thing to add a shim the give proper contact should the shaft be narrower.

Q: 3. Can this be mounted to the Phottix mini boom 16 by replacing the cold shoes with this mount? In other words, can you mount these directly to a 1/4 thread w/o using the stud?

A: Yes, the stud screws on with typical 1/4 20 thread that most stands and tripods use.

Q: 4. Does this device work with MIS (shoe E-mount flash guns) flashguns? I'm trying to get a umbrella setup.

A: The Sony Interface foot will fit into the cold shoe of the Varos.

Q: 5. Will this accept Sony flashes? I bought a universal flash bracket and my sony flash shoe (Godox tt685s) doesn't fit nicely in the flash bracket.

A: I think it would fit but not 100% certain because I have never seen a TT685s up close...I found some images of TT685s foot on google...its a little hard to tell just by looking at a picture. The only thing i can say is that generally speaking this holder will hold onto pretty much any flash ...because it has a clamp at the top...with a screw on the side. Regardless of flash brand it should hold on to the foot of the flash.

Q: 6. i saw pictures online that the flash is mounted flat on the mount. Can the flash be mounted on the side? in order words the narrow part of the flash against the flat surface of the mount.

A: Yes. You can rotate the flash around in the holder. This will allow using the flash head pivot to point the light UP, Down, or left or right sides.

Q: 7. Can you mount an LED 1 x 1 panel on this?

A: By taking off the shoe mount or adjusting the arrangement of included adapters it can work with a variety of LED lights.

Q: 8. How do you remove the metal insert at the bottom?

A: Loosen the knob and push the metal button. It should fall out.

Q: 9. will this work on Paul Buff LS-3900 light stands?

A: If they have typical stud.... Yes it will work.

Q: 10. is this compatible with Yongnuo speedlight?

A: Yes it is compatible with all the flashes since it is cold shoe, and a very nice build.

[66 lb (30 kg)] Great quality and easy to use. The price is worth it.

[66 lb (30 kg)] I've had several umbrella swivels over the years, but they were either blatant copies of the Manfrotto (with all of its shortcomings), or cheaped-out poor cousins. I have often lamented (to my long-suffering wife)  that no one made a swivel with all the good features. Well, in my opinion, Phottix nailed it and then some. I think a tapered hole in mandatory to hold a range of umbrella shaft diameters. This has that. I think an angled hole is mandatory, too to align the center of the umbrella with a flash; Phottix has it. I've always hated the three types of knobs that Manfrotto uses, too. Phottix uses attractive, comfortable knobs that don't snag on everything.

Manfrotto swivels come with a stud that has a hole in its side. What's up with that? If you put the clamping screw through the hole, the stud wobbles around. If you put the clamp against the side, the hole makes it so thin that it can bend/break. (Why so many people copy that stupid design is beyond me.)

Finally, and this is controversial, I know, but I greatly prefer the holding power of the toothed tilt mechanism of the Phottix.

Phottix put this all together for me in one package. And they added the safety catch, a safety cable attachment, a smooth operating cold shoe, and they left it metal color rather than painting it black (like everybody else). I've never been what you would call a fan of Phottix, but I have to give them real props for designing out of the box such a pedestrian object.

I bought 3 of these. The supplied studs (and others I own) fit precisely. But on one of the swivels, one stud fits too tightly. I removed the clamp “cushion” and filed it down about .010 to make it fit perfectly. By the way, that cushion (or shoe), makes the clamp grip really tightly with very little force on the knobs (unlike all those others I’ve had).

[0.875 lb] I bought five of these after my other brand cracked in the middle of a shoot. This is as good as it gets if you want rock solid performance.

[66 lb (30 kg)] Have tried many flash and umbrella holders. This is the best one I have found. Very sturdy. Does the job. Didn't think much about it when I purchased the product. But, it has a place to hang a counter weight which really works great.

[0.875 lb] I use mostly Westcott light modifiers. This Varos holder is far superior to the Westcott one and cost less.

[66 lb (30 kg)] I now own three of these and have turned a few other photographers onto them. Absolutely the best umbrella amount I have found, extremely well-made. Very solid, lots of options for how you want to use it. I especially like that the umbrella hole is slightly angled to help get the flash head centered in the umbrella, it also has a nice ratcheting action.

[66 lb (30 kg)] Unsure why I have been purchasing other more plasticky shoe/umbrella holders. They have broken. This falls and the stands themselves are more likely to break. So glad I got this. Will get more for the future.
