The TASCAM DA-6400 64-Channel Digital Multitrack Recorderfrom TASCAM DA-6400 64-Channel Digital Multitrack Recorderis a 64-channel digital multitrack recorder/player that records to an internal SSD caddy for live and event recording. With I/O options like MADI and DANTE, it is ideal for live recordings, event capture, or to a backup for critical DAW sessions. In addition, the DA-6400 is a suitable option for professional remote recording.

Furthermore, the recorder/player features an AK-CC25 hot-swappable caddy containing a 240GB TASCAM solid-state drive, and the caddy includes a USB-3 jack for stand-alone use. This allows you to hand the drive to the client to offload the BWAV-files into their DAW session. The DA-6400 records 64 tracks at 48 kHz/24-bit or 32 tracks at 96 kHz/24-bit. Also, included on the rear panel are SMPTE timecode, word clock, RS-422, parallel, and Ethernet connections.

The I/O options for the DA-6400 include the IF-MA64/EX interface card (sold separately), with both coaxial and optical MADI connections. This card contains a redundant coaxial connection so that MADI is passed through even if power is lost, making it an ideal backup recorder for DAW sessions. Additional cards (sold separately) include the IF-MA64/BN coaxial MADI card, IF-DA64 Dante card, and IF-AE16 AES/EBU card, with more to come.

In conclusion, the TASCAM DA-6400 combines high performance, flexibility, and complete reliability in a solid-state 64-track recorder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have a sound card such that you could use audio from the mixer in real time for a skype call or google meet?

A: Yes

Q: 2. Does this have a built-in per-line limiter or compressor?

A: That is a mistake on Zoom's part. 4 Mic Inputs, each with dedicated compression, would have been preferable the 6 without, at this price point. Any time a human voice (speaking or singing) gets in front of a microphone, it's a good idea to have a dynamics "babysitter" in the signal path.

Q: 3. Android phone attached to the mix-minus. usb-c adapter to trrs?

A: You can use a basic adapter like the Comica Audio CVM-SPX-UC 3.5mm TRRS Female to USB Type-C Audio-Interface Cable for Android (B&H # COCVMSPXUC) to connect your Android phone to the mix-minus TRRS input. The L8 comes with a TRRS cable to use together with the USB-C adapter.

Q: 4. When using ZOOM L-8 as an audio interface: can I record (in my computer) each input as a separate channel?

A: Yes. Each channel shows up in your audio software as inputs for a total of 12 (1-6 Mono, 7-8 Stereo, 9-10 Stereo & Main Mix). It also has 4 USB outputs for playback. I use mine with Logic Pro X to track instruments & vocals on the go since the board is USB bus powered.. NOTE: You will have to download drivers for Windows and MacOS.

Q: 5. When connected via USB for multitrack recording, does the USB also power the mixer, or do you have to use batteries when recording with USB?

A: This mixer/recorder can perform all functions while receiving power through USB.

Q: 6. Does this have timecode function for sync with multi-cam filming? I get asked enough to do pop-up live event podcast, with filming, that I considering an item like this.

A: Using a simple clapstick, we have had no problem syncing Zoom trax to picture - for up to 2 hours continuous. What is important is that the NLE must understand and correct/compensate the audio sample rate when ingesting the trax. Whether you choose to sample at 44.1KHz or 48KHz, there is a slight difference in the audio sample rate for true 30fps and one for NTSC 29.97fps. That tiny difference can produce sync drift overtime. Our NLE software applies this correction automatically.

Q: 7. Can you record isolated tracks on the SD card? Or only via USB on your computer?

A: You can record the isolated tracks directly to an SD card, to a computer, or both simultaneously.

Q: 8. Can I record via the USB output (into my laptop) while simultaneously using an analog (headphone) output into my video camera?

A: Yes, you can perform this kind of operation with the L-12.

Q: 9. Can you connect a camera to the master out? Like a canon c100m2?

A: Yes. Just so long as the camera has a LINE level input.

Q: 10. Can you record to both the SD Card and the computer at the same time?

A: You can record to SD card and out to record on to a computer at the same time with this product.

[64] This machine has quite a bit packed into it for the price, so if you do multi-track recording or live event stuff with complicated audio setups, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better bang for the buck. There is one annoying thing that WAS NOT mentioned in any of the manuals and that is that a lot of the individual control you have with things like EQ, effects, etc, are DISABLED if you put the sample rate into 96Khz instead of 48Khz. I spent an hour trying to figure that out since it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the official documentation.

I would also like to note that it would good for any user to distinguish controls for recording versus live output as the two are not necessarily one in the same.

[AC Input] Ive used it twice and have been very happy.  The audio quality is first rate, and the documentation is excellent.

Record the show, go home and load the files into my DAW.  Very easy, very reliable.  Completely satisfied.

[16 / 24-Bit] Zoom is thinking like us musicians and what we need. A live mixer and a recorder plus 5 aux sends for headphones or monitors with effects is a game changer. It all ends up separately on an SD for post creative possibilities in you DAW.....wow

[iPad ] This all in one box is nothing short of amazing! I'm blown away by all that it can do. I've been recording for over 20 years, done it all, tascam cassette 4 track, 2/4/8 channel interfaces, laptops, home studios, pro studios. Now this thing comes along and sheesh, it can do it all!
The preamps are nice and clean with plenty of gain, I set the record IN meters in the menu, the 5 mix outs are a god send. I recorded 8 channels at band practice for an hour and a half, got home and transferred to the computer, it was just 3gb.
Immediate playback and ability to mix right away is great, sound quality is crystal clear from highs to lows, the reverb is nice for a adding a bit of depth to vocals/guitar/keys. I love that when you stop and hit record it creates a new folder and song automatically, no fumbling through menu's. The fader adjustments are a bit tricky at first when switching mixes as the faders don't work until you set them back to the light markers but next time I'll know.
I was choosing between the L-12, the soundcraft 24 and the new Tascam mixer/recorder thats coming out, this is perfect in size for portability, I don't need the pad or phone connectivity.
My only complaint is the power adapter wire is thin and flimsy, would have preferred the heftier 3 prong plugs, also the metal piece is a little hard to unplug from the machine, it takes a bit of force, I hope that connector doesn't fall apart one day.
All in all this all in one unit is mind blowing in everything that it can do, I feel it's a laptop, multi-headphone amp, effect unit, mixer all in one small footprint, Zoom came through big on this product!

[16 / 24-Bit] So my band - Chimera - (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5lkJIQnKpJYciREbqQp6Jj) bought this Zoom recorder to record our rehearsals and live shows to then be able to mix and sweeten in Apple Logic down the road. It is working great! We record 8 tracks live into the Zoom on SD card and then I pop it out, into my Mac Studio and the tracks are right there to import into Logic. A little re-naming before importing and everything works perfectly. Still need to tweek some of the settings for recording specific instruments (bass) but overall - great right out of the box. Additionally, the customer service from B&H - as always - was superb. I had a few questions about the interface to my Mac Studio and other audio interface hardware, and the B&H folks showed me how I can turn the 12 tracks I have with the Zoom into 20 tracks with my other hardware. It would have taken me hours (if not longer) to figure that out. Thanks B&H.
