Offering a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length range, the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH Lensis a fast standard zoom from Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH Lensdesigned for full-frame L mount mirrorless cameras. The 18 elements in 15 groups lens construction incorporates four aspherical elements, nine rounded diaphragm blades, and 11 anomalous partial dispersion elements, which help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for notable image sharpness and clarity. The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture benefits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers greater control over focus position for working with shallow depth of field techniques. Designed for consistent performance at all focal lengths and focusing distances, the versatility this lens affords is well-suited to nearly any photographic application.

Complementing the imaging performance is an apt 3.5-stop effective Optical Image Stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. A silent and precise autofocus motor also benefits both stills and video capture, and utilizes an internal focusing mechanism to quicken overall performance. This focusing design also prevents the front 82mm filter ring from rotating during use to better enable the use of circular polarizing or graduated filters. Additionally, this lens features Leica's AquaDura hydrophobic coating on the front and rear elements, to guard against moisture and smudging, and a fully dust and water-sealed design to protect the lens during use in inclement environments.

Wide-angle to portrait-length 24-90mm L mount zoom is designed for use on full-frame mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C-sized models where it will provide a 36-135mm equivalent focal length range.

The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over focus position for selective focus applications.

Four aspherical elements and 11 anomalous partial dispersion glass elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range and increase image sharpness and clarity.

A multiple-axis Optical Image Stabilization system compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds.

A stepping motor with linear positioning offers smooth, silent, and precise autofocus performance for focusing as closely as 11.8" at the 24mm focal length position, or as closely as 17.7" at the 90mm focal length position. Only a single lightweight element is moved during focusing for quickened speeds.

The water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the front and rear optical surfaces to protect against moisture and other elements.

Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in trying shooting conditions.

Internal focusing design prevents the front filter ring from rotating during operation to better enable working with circular polarizers, graduated ND filter, or other types of filters dependent on a specific orientation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have weather proofing?

A: Yes, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens does offer weather sealing.

Q: 2. I don't think you understand my question fully. Mount the lens on the Leica SL. Set the lens @ 24mm and f2.8. Rotate the zoom ring and at the same time look at the aperture value on the camera's LCD screen. At what focal length (35mm, 50mm etc) does f2.8 changes to f3.2 or more?

A: It is about at 24mm f/2.8 then at 50mm it is f/3.6 and 90mm is f/4.

Q: 3. Does this lens fully support manual and autofocus on the Panasonic S1H? I primarily use manual focus for video and autofocus for candid photography.

A: Hi, this lens is fully compatible with the S1H, including manual and auto focus.

Q: 4. This lens appears to be almost identical to the Sigma version. Since Sigma is a member of the "L lens team", can we assume that Sigma is manufacturing this lens under Leica's control?

A: No, Sigma lenses are not manufactured under Leica control. Sigma lenses are designed by Sigma. The L-Mount Alliance Leica Camera, SIGMA and Panasonic, designed to provide photographers with one unified lens mount standard, which may be used on both lenses and cameras released from all three partnering manufacturers. While they share design information and utilization concerning the lens mount, the individual lenses and cameras are designed by their respective manufacturers, with no one brand overseeing the design of the cameras/lenses, only the lens mount.

Q: 5. Will the zoom drift (from gravity) if the lens is mounted on a camera that is pointed straight down?

A: No. It will not change focal lengths if it's tilted down or up. The Leica zooms are operated by a zoom ring vs a push pull action which is where, when lenses are sometimes worn with this type of of zoom, could drift as you mentioned.

Q: 6. is this lens made in Germany?

A: This lens's country of origin in Germany.

Q: 7. Is this lens auto focus?

A: Yes. It's an auto focus lens on any L mount camera.

Q: 8. Can it be used with a step up ring 82mm to 77mm? How does it affect viggneting? - All my variable filter kit are 77's...

A: The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Lens will vignette at 24mm and 28mm if you attach an 82-77mm step-down ring with a filter on top. If you zoom to 35mm, you can get rid of the vignetting.

Q: 9. Does this lens have dual stabilization when mounted on S1/S1R/S1H?

A: it has but the camera prioritizes the body for stabilization.

Q: 10. Can I use this on my Leica CL? If so, obviously the focal lengths change to about 36-105mm.

A: Yes, you can. :)

[Autofocus] The APO 90-280 with SL (601) are a wonderful match.

[L-Mount] I've only had the lens for a little while, but I'm extremely pleased with it. At f8~11 the depth of field is astonishing. I'm not a techie,, but stuff up close and far away are really, really sharp. Colors are saturated and true. I have a Sony 14-24 E mount for my a1, and it's very, very good. But this one's better. This is all visceral, not scientific. I'm glad I made the choice

[82 mm (Front)] Bought open box from B&H in perfect condition.

On my SL-2, the lens zooms smoothly and displays colors brilliantly. Can't really tell any difference from my other German-made Leica lenses from a fit and finish perspective.

Early results show excellent detail throughout the zoom range and deep in the corners.

The lens is a bit larger than I prefer but I suppose that's to be expected.

The real surprise came when I processed DNG images taken with this lens using the recently released DxO Pure Raw 4. Extraordinary, simply extraordinary. Totally amazing how that software takes a truly excellent image to the next level with just a few clicks of a mouse.

I'm completely satisfied with the lens and love the images it produces. Another fine purchase from B&H!

[Yes] This is amde in Japan by Sigma, we all know that. But leica has made it thier own stell barrel etc, and the price is worth the lens in my opinion. If you want a stone cold Leica lens you will be paying twice at least. I didnt buy the kit I got the SL2-S at a brick and mortar, and bought the lens here to compare it to my canon 24-70mm and they are neck in neck and it might actually be a tad better.

[Full-Frame] I'm absolutely loving the Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. It hits the sweet spot with its 14 mm focal length, making my SL-System adventures pop. This lens is a beast with its f/2.8 aperture, capturing stunning panoramas and videos effortlessly. Whether I'm exploring landscapes or snapping architectural wonders, this bad boy nails it, delivering sharp images every time.

[f/2.8 to 4] The 24-70mm Vario-Elmarit-SL is a wonderful lens for the Leica SL, SL2, and SL2-S cameras. The image quality is excellent, and the lens handles beautifully on those cameras (even if a little too big and heavy for the CL or TL2), which makes it a very comfortable and convenient, carry-round-all-day, single-lens setup---this as opposed to the optically quite superb 24-90mm Vario-Elmarit-SL, which is longer and heavier and makes those cameras front-heavy. The build of this new 24-70mm lens is all metal and rock solid, and the focus and zoom rings turn with the smoothness one would expect from Leica. So forget all the meaningless nonsense about whether the lens were made in Japan by Sigma, because the only important thing is that it is made fully up to Leica quality standards. It's a terrific lens, and you will get what you pay for!
