With low handling noise, the ability to endure loud sound sources before distortion, and support for battery or phantom power, the NTG2 offers a versatile, cost-effective solution for recording clean dialogue and sound effects.

The combination of the NTG2's 11" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 18 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and operability with 48V phantom power or a single AA battery, the NTG2 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on cameras and camcorders.

The NTG2 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG2 in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.

The NTG2 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I leave the AA battery in or do I need to remove it when I'm done recording?

A: You can leave a AA battery inside of the RODE NTG2 Shotgun Microphone as long as you will be using the mic again within a few days. Otherwise, it is always best to remove the battery from an electronic device that will not be used for a while in order to prevent damage from problems caused by the battery leaking.

Q: 2. I know for the fact that this mic uses A9 battery. is there anyway I can get rechargeable A9 battery for my mic ?thanks

A: You mean, 9 volt battery, Rechargeable, Yes. B&H # POMHR9VP - Powerex 9V Precharged Rechargeable NiMH Battery (9.6V, 230mAh) - That battery is a hassle to replace. Hope that helps!

Q: 3. Can this mic be adapted to run of of camera power?

A: There is nothing to indicate that this is an option. There are no external connections for power, just a place to put the 9v battery.

Q: 4. Will this kit attach to an arm with a 5/8 thread tip?

A: The RODE NTG5 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone will require a threading adapter to attach to a boom arm with a 5/8" threading tip. This is the recommended adapter: On-Stage MA-100B 3/8" Male to 5/8" Female Mic Screw Adapter (Black) B&H # ONMA100B.

Q: 5. What is the S/N Ratio and the Dynamic Range?

A: The RODE NTG5 Shotgun Microphone Kit with Auray Boompole (BH # RONTG5ABPK) has an S/N ratio of 84 dB. The dynamic range specification is not published, but estimated to be about 120dB SPL.

Q: 6. Would like to run this mic off of my Sony a99ii camera power. Can this mic be adapted to run of of my camera power and if so what would l need to make it work?

A: There is nothing that would indicate that you can use external power on this mic. There are no external connections and only a place to put the 9v battery.

Q: 7. Can the ntg3b plug directly into a Sony a7s2? Or is the ntg4+ the only one with a built in phantom?

A: The NTG-3 requires an external phantom power source and is not directly compatible with the a7s2. The Rode NTG-4+ features a built in rechargeable battery that will allow for direct connection to the camera as well as the Rode NTG-2 which is able to accept a AA battery for power.

Q: 8. Does this mic work with the Canon 80D?

A: Yes. I suggest keeping the mic amp up and playing down the camera amp as was recommended for the 7D.

Q: 9. Where is this mic made? (In Australia, like other Rode products?)

A: The Rode NTG5 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone is manufactured in Australia.

Q: 10. Will Rode VideoMic Pro work with Samsung Galaxy S8+ to record videos with good sound quality?

A: The Rode VideoMic Pro will provide superior quality, directional audio for your smartphone. You would require a Rode SC4 3.5mm TRS to TRRS Adaptor, B&H # ROSC4.

[1.145 lb] I was really happy with this mic it has a extreamly good range and also is a simple mic to use it dosent need to be powered by your camera and can run off a AA battery. It can also run on consumer cameras with a simple mini jack to Xlr cable. I am running off of my simple canon hf20 and it sound grate its a thousand time better then my on board cam mic. But u will need a light mount for the canon hf 20 because of it wired little shoe and a shotgun mount to put it on a camera or boom pole but it does come with a small mic holder that could be put on a boom. But your better off going with a Pearstone shotgun mic shock mount it also works well with this mic and it keeps it form making nose when walking around with it.

[Mono] I am using this microphone for home videos and school projects and the quality is a major step up from the HV-30's onboard mic, It's great that it has the AA battery option because since my camera doesn't supply the phantom power, I can still use this mic, I love that RODE stands by their products with the 10 year warranty.

[End Address] I was blown away with the quality of this microphone. I have used stock Sony shotgun mics in the past on my cams and bought the NTG-2 for use on my Sony AXU2000. The audio is crisp and clear and I actually felt that it was almost too clear whereas I had to manually adjust my levels to get rid of unwanted background noise that my older mics could not pick up in the past. The mic screams quality and professionalism with its design and construction.

[1.145 lb] I use it for network stringer work. For ESPN I use it at sidelines for sporting events. The mic is excellent in every regard.

[Mono] I use this w/ a Canon hV20 and juicedlink preamp. I really like the sound out this mic if, like any mic, you get it close to the talent. A combo of setting the Juiced link preamp trim and the on-board camera sound levels makes for a noise-free, intimate sound quality. I'm not a sound tech nerd, but I, like most anyone, can tell if sound quality is unprofessional. And it isn't coming from this mic. Pricey? Yes. But I don't know what mics are worth a cheaper price tag and this price is comparable to other brand mics.

[Mono] I use it for weddings, birthdays, documentaries, etc... things that are great: sounds clear, easy to carry around. things that aren't so great: nothing.

[Solid-State] Capturing audio to go with video interviews. I mount it on my camera, but run the audio into a Merantz 660. It records clean and is light and easy to handle.

[Solid-State] I was about to start a very low budget documentary project and almost didn't make this purchase, thinking I might be able to get away with the on-camera microphone on my Sony XH-A1s. Thank goodness I didn't. This microphone picked up excellent audio, even in crowded noisy environments and I now have tons of quality (and USABLE!) footage that I would not otherwise have been able to get. I used the microphone mounted on the camera which worked pretty well. Of course, if the camera (and therefore mic) isn't pointing at someone the audio quality isn't there (if it's there at all). If I can have a bigger crew next time, I'll definitely go with a boom pole.
