The Tiffen 138mm T1/2 IR Filter for Enhanced Imagingis a near-infrared to infrared control filter that is designed for digital cinematography. Many digital motion-picture cameras are designed to maximize their ability to capture red hues, and in that process near-infrared or infrared contamination may occur. If the proportion of near-infrared or infrared light that reaches the sensor of a digital cinematography camera becomes too great, the results can show unwanted color shifts, particularly in dark areas of the frame such as shadows where the appearance of black is dominant.

When the T1/2 IR Filter is used, near-infrared light waves beginning at 680nm are blocked by approximately 45%. Infrared light waves at higher frequencies are further impeded until nearly flat attenuation is achieved at 775 to 800nm. This process helps to ensure that the light that falls on the camera's sensor is limited to the visible spectrum. Potential near-infrared or infrared color shifts are prevented or minimized, which preserves color accuracy throughout the frame. While a Tiffen T1/2 IR Filter is sufficient for many cameras, others may have sensors that require a higher degree of near-infrared and infrared control, such as that provided by a Tiffen T1 IR Filter.

This filter is constructed from Water White glass for increased clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings. It measures 138mm in diameter and is suitable for use in select matte boxes and sunshades.

[138 mm] I purchased the filter for a Sony EX camera. The blacks on the camera have a red tone but once I put on this filter the red went away and the blacks looked black. The filter worked so good that I ordered another one for my other camera 5

[138 mm] I use this with my BMCC to cut out the infrared pollution that plagues this camera when used with ND's (which is necessary under a majority of shooting conditions). I am happy to report that 680nm seems to be the sweet spot for this camera as it appears to eliminate most if not all infrared pollution. Additionally, the glass seems to be of quality as I cannot see any perceptible image quality degradation when used with/without my Schneider filters. 5

[IR/UV Control] This filter will eliminate far red casting on man-made black materials like rayon making them look brown. Keep your black shirts black without changing the rest of the spectrum. An essential filter in the kit for your EX1. 5

[Glass] This is a one-of-a-kind filter that stops the Infra red leak on XDCam cameras like the EX-1 and EX-3. It WORKS! We shoot a lot of theatrical stage lit features, and before we added the T1 filter, the IR leaks turned black costumes into a deep maroon, magenta color. Not anymore. Blacks are black with this filter on. 5

[138 mm] I am a long-time PMW-EX1 user. I purchased it in January of 2009 and up until this point never really dug into WHY certain colors looked different compared to other cameras. I just assumed that it was the nature of the camera. However, more recently after upgrading my multi-cam setup to Sony CX900s, the black-turned-brown problem became blatantly obvious. For the longest time I just lived with it until I couldn't stand it anymore. Research led me here: the Tiffen T1 IR cut filter. I popped this baby on, re-white balanced, and bam! Blacks became black, no more brown! NOW the biggest problem I face is more-closely color matching the EX1 to my CX900s, but let me tell you it is now a LOT better than it was before. I'm over 8 years late to the party, but hey, I can get more use out of my EX1! My clients have been very forgiving and didn't even notice the brown blacks before, but it was driving me nuts. Problem solved. If you own an XDCAM EX, just get this. I've heard the replacement model of the EX1 still has the same IR leak problem, so this filter is still relevant to the XDCAM line today. Some things you can't fix in post, and I've never believed in that philosophy anyway. The higher-quality your first-generation signal, the better your output will be; this filter gives you that. 5
