The EL-9 Mike-e from Empirical Labs is a transformer-coupled mic preamp with compressor/saturator circuits that deliver classic knee compression, as well as versatile tonal coloring. This low noise transformer input amplifier section offers precise digital control over gain and has a signal-to-noise ratio of 130 dB. It features stepped control knobs for gain control and a "BAD!" LED indicator for alerting the user when input signal is overloading the circuit.

The front panel instrument input that allows the unit to function as an ultra-clean Direct Box. The saturator is a multi-stage soft-clipping circuit that provides triode-type saturation effects, while severely flattening out the peaks. The compressor circuit is based on the Distressor, but with a longer attack time. Preset ratios include 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, and Nuke. Emphasis improves the signal to noise ratio, while soft-clipping high frequencies before the CompSat circuit and cutting the frequencies after it.

Mix provides the parallel compression technique achieved by mixing between the compressed and the dry, uncompressed signal. This can often help maintain transients and a sense of dynamic range while enhancing the low level nuances. A stereo link connector allows two Mike-e processors to be used for stereo buss functions, while the optional send/return insert modification allows for additional processors, such as the Lil Freq EQ, to be connected between the mic preamp and compressor, forming a powerful and flexible channel strip. The Mike-e ships with a standard IEC power cord.

[0.9 to 70 msec] Nice sounding tube preamp with lots of options. Tube plate voltage can be adjusted between (low) warmer sound and (high) cleaner sound. The high tube plate voltage option is good for chaining with another tube preamp (e.g. UA 610) for getting a different character. I get a lot of use out of the channel strip features -- the compressor / expander, de-esser, and EQ, which all work pretty well. Digital out too in a lot of formats, if you need it -- I don't. Fit and finish / physical quality is very good on the two that I ordered.

[11 lb / 5 kg] For the price, it is a basic EQ that I bought last minute to use in line for a mono feed to a series of speakers in a loud gym space production. I was short for equipment in this production that involved multiple spaces for production. This EQ was only used for EQ on 7 wirelss LAVs in this loud boomy room. I was able to cut all the hot frequencies with 4 very cheap low quality self powered speakers (all 300-500w). For its price range, it is basic and simple and did the job. XLR in/out was a must.

[15 W maximum] I dont give products 5 stars ever. But today I'm doing that. Let me tell you I am really impressed. I can see why ART named this thing the Voice Channel. I keep reading about people using this for bass or overheads (It would work great for these) but this is really designed for the voice. After owning one for just a couple of hours and really getting a feel for the unit, it took my voice to a brand new level. Admittedly this is the first time i've done compression/eq/de-essing/gate/expand out of the box. However i feel like the investment in plugins (and the fact that very successful producers like Chris Lorde Algie and Graham Cochrane use plugins) prove there's nothig wrong with that approach. I've been recording in the box (plus a preamp) for a while. This was such an immediate upgrade. I've tried both using the USB out as well as running direct into my interface. The quality is absolutely there. The control though? If you're an in-the box mixer, you should still get one of these. Add a bit of compression and De-Esser on the way in and your singer can relax and focus on the performance. You can get SO MUCH MORE out of the singer that way. Overall i've been so impressed with this unit. The Preamp goes from SUPER clean to as much breakup as you would ever realistically use. It's a very musical preamp. And then the controls let you fine tune. I went from doing everything in the box to now I just use reverb and maybe a touch of further eq once I have my mix almost finished. When I expand and buy more channel strips, I'll probably just buy more of these.

[0.9 to 70 msec] This Graphic Equalizer works great, easy to set up and has intuitive controls. This unit replaced another brand that had failed. The best part is that ART makes great equipment that is 1/3 to 1/2 less than other brands with the same features. This is the second ART 351 that I have used and would recommend this unit without reservations. This unit is installed in a medium-size church to control feedback on the public address system.

[0.9 to 70 msec] I use it with vocals an acoustic guitars, usually with a Neumann TLM49 or Rode NTK.I love the warmth of the tubes in the preamp. The eq is outstanding. The compressor section is very nice, but a little tricky because the attack and release times are a little bit slow and tends to sound too transparent. I compress a lot the vocals and bass and I really like the sound of the optical compressors. If you are good sound engineer an musician, Youll love it.

[15 W maximum] Empirical Labs is one of the few companies that has its own taste for sound, they have not moved to China. For its price, I do not know better than an amplifier, I advise.
