I'm using a boom pole to record dialogue, so would it be a better idea to use a cable like this (but longer) to connect the mic with the camera, or to use a cable to connect it to a separate audio recorder like a Zoom H4n?

A: If you have a Zoom, the mic preamps are superiorto the Canon. I would only use the Canon as the principle sound if you needed the smallest rig possible. (Run and gun) otherwise an out board recorder will give you a better quality and real time metering and monitoring. (This is critical) I use a similar setup. You can also use a padded cord to go from line out on the zoom to the Canon. You then have good sound on your camera card as well. This gives you redundancy which can come in handy...
