Q: 10. What is the best way to use there cards to white balance your production?

A: I use the card when I use a pair of hot lights to light my subject. The lights put out a very warm light. Once the lights are set up, I place the card in the scene and take a picture. When I review the pictures from that session in Lightroom, I pull up that first picture with the card. I use Lightroom's automatic white ballance tool with the curser over the portion of the picture that shows the card -- or more specifically I place the curser on the portion card such as the red color or black color. I click and the white ballances changes to something very acceptable. Then I make the same white ballance change to all the pictures taken during that session. I'm sure there are more sophisticated ways to do this, but this one produces very acceptable results.

[0.3 lb] I got this originally because I bought a refurbished lens and, no matter what I did with it, my shots were coming in just slightly out of focus. I could have taken it to a shop for lens adjustments, but now I can do all my adjustments, for all my lenses, for each camera body, right at home. If you're a precisionist or a data junkie like me, this will make your day.

[0.3 lb] All of my lenses were out of micro focus. Some not too bad. Some were out by as much as 10 setting. I was calibrating on a Canon 70D. Over all it really helped by speeding up the process. The aperture tests really help find the sweet spot of my lenses. Now I don't have to shoot a hundred shots to get one good one.

[0.3 lb] This program is an excellent value. I've found targets to be very difficult to work with for any degree of accuracy and repeatability. I bought the Pro version and use it on a Canon 7D and 7DII and several Canon lenses from 10-22 mm to 100-400mm. to include the 1.4 extender. The program provides a great deal of information fairly quickly once you get it set up. I had a problem with the older 7D and FoCal responded by email in two days and it was a simple camera setting. The program is fussy about setup as you would expect - I went to an old survey tripod to provide a stronger base and if you are really serious you might want to attach the camera to a solid bench. So far I've run all lenses through twice to check on repeatability as well as field testing for the past three weeks. I was really pleased with the results particularly the 100-400. I had a good idea what was going on by target tests but this program really put the lenses spot on . . . (except for temperature and a host of other variables that may affect focus). In short, my focus quality took a big step forward thanks to this program.

[0.3 lb] I went through a bunch of lenses and it worked quite well. The install is easy enough but you do need to figure out the proper distance from camera to target based on focal length. Once you that it is pretty easy to setup the shot on the target and adjust until you get a green check mark meaning you are aimed properly then start the test. It talks to you if you need to do anything. With Nikon you need to manually set the tune values as you go through the test and at the end. Nikon does not support software control for that one step. Some Canon cameras you sit back and drink a beer. In between it does it all and makes nice charts graphs and pictures with all sorts of fun numbers. The reason you go through all this stuff is because you may have a lens that was out of tune and doing poor focus. I had one and after tuning it was deadly sharp. So who wouldn't like that? My best lenses were just a tad plus or minus 1 but why not get them better? The mechanics of setting up the target with decent light is the only hard part. I also bought a long tether cable (from someone else) as this works better on a laptop than a desktop so with a desktop you need flexibility and the distance to the target. If you need a long focal length calibrated that can be a an issue but is the same for any software. 50 times the focal length is the distance give or take. For zooms the short end works but you could do both and then average. It knows what lens is attached so it tells you if you pick in the middle, but it is just a warning. A plus with the Pro version is it compares your results with other camera / lens combinations like yours. It just feels so nice to know you are better off than someone. Tripod is REQUIRED! Don't even think about it without one. It's not a con just is what it is.

[4.8 oz / 135 g] I shoot with the D800E. My go to lenses are the Nikon F2.8 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and the Zeiss Apo Sonnar 2/135. I like sharp high resolution prints. I print with the Epson 3880, with the majority of my prints at 17 X 22. Now that the FoCal Pro is available through B&H, I decide it was time to buy the software. It was some of the best money I have spent. I took my time getting acquainted with the software. I read the manuals and viewed some of the training videos. I then picked a primary lens, my Nikon 300m F4.0, and played around with the software and settings until I knew what I was doing. Once I was comfortable I set out to calibrate all my lenses(8). The entire process took under 3.0 hours. Three of the lenses were zooms so I calibrated the long and short lengths. For example, on the 70-200 I calibrated 70 and 200. A lot of the time was spent changing the lighting and target distance for each of the lenses. Once the target was acquired the software did the rest of the work. Make sure you are real clear on target acquisition. That is the hardest part. Once you get it, it's a breeze. I ran the calibration a few times on some of the lenses to make sure I was getting a good read. Did I mention I was obsessive compulsive? One of my lenses is front focusing a lot. And I mean a lot. I know so much more about my lenses and how to work with them to get the sharpest images possible. That makes me happy.
