Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What fixer is recommended to be used with this film? Will TF4 work good with it?

A: I use Kodak fixer or Kodafix...I always use a hardening fixer after too many scratched negatives using rapid fixers (I mean geez, it only adds a minute to the film processing time, so rapid fixer isn't that rapid IMO)

Q: 2. does this paper have optical whiteners/brighteners?

A: Hello,No. This paper is free of optical brightening agents. It is designed for artists and photographers using inkjet technology. It is a very very great paper, top quality. I have made over 100 Black and white photos with this one and the results are beautiful. I hope this answer will be helpul for you. Happy Holidays! Bernard, from Qubec, Canada

Q: 3. Please estimate exposure times Aprox. exposure times in a conventional 5 X 7 view camera?

A: I hope this helps, the ISO is rated about 3.

Q: 4. Do you know the ISO of this paper ? I want to use it in a pinhole camera. Thank U!

A: Fomaspeed Variant 312 VC RC Paper (Matte, 5 x 7", 100 Sheets) exact ISO is not specified but in general matte RC paper have an ISO of about 25.

Q: 5. After pre-flashing, can I use it a few hours or days later? Or should it be used immediately?

A: There is no set time listed for storing pre flashed HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). As with all photographic materials, they do degrade over time - so the shorter the time frame, the better. Be sure to store all papers in a cool and dry environment.

Q: 6. Can anyone compare Arista EDU Ultra 100 to Agfa APX100?

A: The Arista is FomaPan as I've heard, it has a lot of black and white. I've only shot APX 400, it has more traditional grays also.

Q: 7. Is this available in luster?

A: Unfortunately, this paper is currently available only in glossy and emulsion-in.

Q: 8. Is there a gloss (lustre) differential between the unprinted (white) areas and the printed areas? I like Museo Silver Rag because it does not exhibit this differential, but the paper is very expensive.

A: I don't remember any gloss difference; however I bought this paper for testing to replace Ilford smooth pearl after Ilford went bankrupt. My go to art paper is Canson platine. I use these mid priced luster papers for printing photo exhibits for my law practice and law firm. I assumed that the Canson paper would be OK and consistent from lot to lot. This Canson paper was better than epson luster but lacked the contrast/ pop and feel of the Ilford(310gsm instead of 270) that really seems to impress both Jurors and Judges.

Q: 9. Will this paper be damaged by airport security check X-ray scan machines or it's package protects the paper from this problem ?

A: Theoretically, it is possible that high strength X-ray machines can fog film or paper, which is typically the case with checked bagged rather than hand-carry/carry-on which typically use a weaker form of x-ray radiation.

Q: 10. Has anyone tried developing this in Ansco 130?

A: We are not seeing any reports of use with that specific solution, However, we feel that if you do tests you will be satisfied with the result.

[P100 to P200] I haven't done B&W printing since 1976, but I recently acquired some 2 1/4 and 4x5 negatives, and I thought it might be fun to try contact-printing in my bathroom. I purchased this paper and the Arista paper developer and odorless fixer from B&H. I used two food dishes for trays (faucet rinse as stop bath), the room light as an exposure source, and the eTone LED safelight as my only 21st Century accommodation.

Everything went really well: the paper has good blacks, good whites, developed easily, washes easily, dried easily without water spots! (Per Ilford's recommendation, I washed for more than a minute under the faucet after the fixer).

The best part was the safelight. I did color (Cibachrome) for another 10 years, but working with a safelight is so much more fun, and the B&W process so much faster! I did a safelight test as my first print, and I can say with confidence the eTone is 100% safe for this paper. It's fully portable (no cord) so I easily moved it from my dry area to my wet area as needed, and more than bright enough!

A few issues with Arista:
1. Not a lot of instructions and the company doesn't seems to have a website.
2. Very difficult to tell the emulsion from the base side of the paper except by looking under the safelight. The emulsion appeared glossy on this paper - but might be harder to discern on other finishes.
3. The paper dries to a moderate gloss - it does NOT have that old ferrotype super-glossy look, at least not with air drying.
4. The paper was too light-sensitive for my original plan to expose it upside-down on a light plate. The briefest exposure I could make this way was still too much light.

Again, very happy I tried Arista's B&W paper and chemicals! I would definitely recommend this!
