Equipped with a large and intuitive 2.7" color touchscreen LCD, the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478D-U Light Meterfrom Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478D-U Light Meterwill make incident metering for ambient and flash light super simple. The major ability of this system enables complete control of the flash's power in 0.1-step increments.

Notable for the L-478 light meter series is the large color touchscreen, which allows for fast control over settings for both ambient and flash metering. The meter is quite capable as well, able to function within a range of -2 to 22.9 EV at ISO 100. Additionally, for the current crop of hybrid shooters this model expands on its standard stills functions with two distinct video modes: Cine and HD Cine. These settings give access to frame rate selection from 1-1,000 fps as well as shutter angle settings from 1-358° as well as ISO 850 for Canon cinema cameras.

Guaranteeing the best possible performance is a suite of functions and features that will ensure users have the best tools available to them. Among these is a flash analyzing function that uses ambient and flash simultaneously to allow for shooters to dial in their preferred mix. Also, using the included Data Transfer Software users will be able to do Exposure Profiling for their camera by using the optional 5° viewfinder, showing dynamic range limits and knowing that you will have an accurate exposure. Alongside this is a Filtration Compensation Mode that allows for the meter to account for filter factor, which can now be done at up to 12 EV for landscape shooters using high-density ND filters. Other features include a contrast function for comparing brightness, a memory mode for 8 readings, and illuminance or luminance measurement.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How well will this work with the Indra 500

A: It does a fine job. You must set the Indra to receive Strato II signals. It would be best to use a Strato II Transmitter as it has ABCD groups. But you could also use an Odin Transmitter which has ABC groups. There is no power control as the Phottix system is not set up to allow it.

Q: 2. Is it compatible with the Flex TT 6?

A: This can be used with a TT6.

Q: 3. Minimum iso that i can measure with this?

A: The following unit has a iso range of 3-409600

Q: 4. Does this measure color temperature?

A: No, it does not measure colour temperature.

Q: 5. does this meter trigger Yungnuo YN-E3-RT remotely?

A: No; the L-478D-U does not have any internal radio. There are other L-478 meters that do, but they are specifically for PocketWizard, Elinchrom or Phottix receivers.

Q: 6. Is the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478D-U Light Meter compatible with Alien Bees lights?

A: The L-478DR-U has the built in PocketWizard transmitter which can be used with the PocketWizard FlexTT5 and AC9 to actually do power control of your Alien Bees. I do this. Works well. The L-478D has not radio transmitter so it is necessary to put it on Cordless mode and press to test button on your lights or trigger the lights using one of many light triggers on the market. This too works very well.

Q: 7. Can you see the touchscreen on a bright day? Or will it be like an iPhone where you can't see anything.

A: If the sun hits it directly, it is hard to see.The workaround is to swivel the receptor head while taking a reading. It rotates 90clockwise and 180 counterclockwise.

Q: 8. How do you change the f stops in setting ? examples 2.81 to 3.2

A: You can select the resolution of the F Stop display in Custom settings (Press the MENU button. Select 3). You can select full stops with 0.10 stop, 0.5 (half stops), or 0.3 (one third stops which is what most digital cameras use). Your examples are the full stop and tenths, and 1/3 stops displays.

Q: 9. What is the small number I get after my reading in F mode: EG 125s (small 6)?

A: The 478 display can be set to readout in full stops with 1/10 (which is the number you are referring to), Third Stops (which is what most cameras use), and Half stops (which is what older, manual camera lenses use). The meter reads out in 0.10 (tenth) stops to enable seeing the exact amount of lighting available and adjusting the light to a very fine degree. The 1/10 stop increases towards the next highest aperture number. This is a common feature for most Sekonic meters.

Q: 10. Does this read color temperature?

A: No. It is a light meter for ambient light and flash.

[Cordless] Very nice handheld meter with lots of components. Probrably not use all of them but follow instruction book and everything works well, Very accurate and lightweight and easy to put in camera bag.

[1/1000] Although some think Superfluous, Very handy and re-enforces your ability to guesstimate when necessary.

[Yes, 9 Readings] Great light meter. I use this for film and video production and it really has helped adjust my camera settings from every angle.

I highly recommend this device and the online video tutorials to use it properly. It will improve your productions.

[1/1000] Best light meter in this price range. I can custom set shutter angle with frame rate in cine mode and that is all I need in a light meter

[1/1000] My mirrorless gear has a very broad range of usable ISO's, shutter speeds and f stops. This meter has the flexibility to handle all of them. In addition it allows me to meter the way I often shoot which is manual metering with auto ISO.

[0.735 lb] I have used my L-28 C2 all over the world. It was great at the time. After relying too much on the internal camera meters. I decided it was time to buy another one. Since the C2 was so good for me I decided to go with Sekonic again. So far it's been a joy. (And while the C2 isn't around to hear, easier to use too!)

[Yes, 9 Readings] This light meter works perfectly with my Sony Alpha series camera. I do wish I had bought the 478DR to take advantage of the remote flash capability, but this one does fine.

[Cordless] I am still fairly new to the hobby and probably shouldn't have jumped for such a nice meter. That said, no regrets for doing so.

Simple and intuitive. Surprisingly light in hand.

[1/1000] Broke down and replaced my flash meter. I closed my studio about 20 years ago, and the flash meter went with it. I'm getting ready to open another studio and I bought the Sekonic Light Master Pro L-478D-U. It is a joy to use, much easier to use than the one it replaced.
