The Azden SMX-15 Shotgun Video Microphonefrom Azden SMX-15 Shotgun Video Microphoneis a battery-powered supercardioid shotgun microphone engineered to produce pro-quality sound for DSLRs and other compact cameras. Featuring the same microphone element as Azden's professional shotguns (SGM-250 & SGM-250P), the SMX-15 is capable of capturing broadcast-quality sound, and allows you to focus on sound in front of the camera while reducing the capture of extraneous noise from the rest of the environment.

Using the built-in +20 dB gain booster to get a strong clean audio signal into your camera, the SMX-15 minimizes the need to turn up noisy preamps usually associated with DSLRs, and also includes a -10 dB pad to protect against distortion when recording in loud environments such as live concerts and motorsport events.

Furthermore, the microphone has a wide frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz and has a full, natural sound. There is a low-cut filter switch for reducing low frequencies below 120 Hz, which is useful for mitigating noise caused by air conditioners, wind, and traffic noise.

Powered by two AA batteries, you can operate the microphone for approximately 24 hours with no degradation of sound quality. The battery-indicator LED light lets you know when it's time to change batteries, providing up to a 1-hour warning beforehand.

Finally, an integrated shock-absorbing shoe mount isolates the microphone from camera-motor- and handling noise. The mount is designed to fit the standard camera shoe and comes with 1/4"-20 threads at the bottom for mounting to boom poles and other camera accessories.

The audio controls on DSLR cameras are limited, if they exist at all. And DSLRs are notoriously known to have low-quality microphone preamps that add noise to the video soundtrack when the gain is turned up. Azden's SMX-15 has a +20 dB gain booster so you can get a strong, clean audio signal into your camera, minimizing the need to turn up the noisy preamp

The SMX-15 has a wide frequency response ranging from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, so the audio you capture will sound full and natural

Powered by two AA batteries, which is a lower-cost option than the 9V battery used in some competitor microphones, the SMX-15 can achieve 24 hours of operation with a single set of batteries with absolutely no degradation of sound quality

Maximize battery life by using the unique "Auto" power setting. When set to Auto, the SMX-15 can detect when a camera is on and will automatically power on and off with the camera (requires a mic input that provides plug-in power). Ever leave your microphone on by accident to discover that the batteries are dead the next time you try to use it? Eliminate that possibility by always leaving the SMX-15 in "Auto" mode

Integrated into the design of the SMX-15 is a custom-made, shock-absorbing shoe mount to isolate the microphone from camera-motor- and handling noise

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a power light on the mic?

A: There is no light.

Q: 2. The specs indicate the operating voltage to be 11 - 50 volts. When I use this Azden mic with the Xvive U3C Wireless transmiiter, may I keep the transmitter phantom power voltage switch at 12 v instead of 48 v so I may get 7 hours battery power usage out of the transmitter as opposed to 5 hours usage using the 48 v setting?

A: Yes that is exactly what you should do.

Q: 3. How far from the sound source will this shotgun mike work? I want to record a lecture in a classroom and want to know if this mike will work from the back of a classroom.

A: I find this works best when close to the sound source. In a similar situation to what you are describing I have run an extension sounds cable ( 3.5 mm female to male) to connect to the camcorder and place the mic on a stand close to the speaker, right out of frame.

Q: 4. Will this work on a canon XA11?

A: Yes, this Azden SGM-250CX Short Shotgun Microphone will be compatible with the Canon XA11.

Q: 5. are you able to tilt the microphone up or down at all?

A: No -the microphone is in a fixed positon when mounted on a bracket or in the camera's shoe.

Q: 6. Can I use this mic with my computer? I have an iMac and want to use it with my screen recording software to create tutorials. I purchased the audio jack to USBC cable to connect to my computer, but the computer isn't recognizing it.

A: You need to go TRRS into the computer for your computer to be able to see it through the mini to USB-C adapter that you are using. So you can either use the Rode SC4 adapter with the cable that was included with your SMX-30V microphone, or you can use the Rode SC7 cable as a replacement to go from the microphone into the adapter that you have connected to your computer.

Q: 7. Can I use with a Samsung Galaxy 5 but use it with live stream or video with it on my phone for example I can use this simultaneously with video on my android and be able to film

A: The mic will function on smartphones when using apps that have sound recording capability. This includes video and audio apps.

Q: 8. Is the Azden smx-10 compatible with the Canon Rebel T3i?

A: The SMX-10 is compatible with the T3i. It will mount to the shoe, and connect to the cameras 3.5mm mic input jack via the attached cable. AAA battery is required to power the mic.

Q: 9. Will this mic work with a Canon XHA1 video camera?

A: Hello. Thank you for your inquiry in regards to the Azden SMX-10 Stereo Microphone. The Canon XHA1 video camera comes with a 3.5mm mic input terminal near the microphone clip holder. So, the mic should work without a problem. The SMX-10 is self-powered via a AAA battery (not included).

Q: 10. Is the Azden SMX-10 Mic compatible with the Canon Vixia HV40?

A: Yes it is.

[Black] Back in the broadcast camera days, most all pro cameras came with decent handle-mounted mics. Things are different in the DSLR-type hybrid video camera world. The purpose of an on camera mic for me is to record ambient effects. However, on occasion I have actually shot location interviews, usually outdoors at big events. By moving in 3-4 feet from the subject and placing the person so the mic is facing away from the loudest background noise, it is possible to get useable audio. The Azden is, in my opinion, comparable to the similarly priced Rode camera mic. It has two features that influenced my purchase. One, it's a small size and does not stick out behind the camera too far. Some of the on camera mics are offset so far it's nearly impossible to use the EVF. Second, the mic has an auto switch that's nice. Not auto gain, but auto on off. You can set it in auto, plug it into your camera's audio input, and when the camera is turned on, the mic turns on. When the camera is turned off, the mic goes off. So you don't have to remember to turn it on when you get in a hurry. My GH5 has audio meters visible on the screen, so I always know if I'm getting audio even if my headphones are off. But if you don't have internal meters, this auto on/off feature is nice. The sound quality of this mic is not going to be as good as a shotgun mic costing hundreds more--that's what my boom mic is for. But for its intended use I think it's a great buy.

[End Address] I am very pleased with the Azden SMX-15. I chose it over the SMX-30 since it is slightly smaller and I did not expect to need the stereo feature the -30 has. Love the auto feature that detects when the camera is on.

[0.71 lb] Way better than the three Rode Mics that broke on me. Very intuitive.

[Supercardioid] Azden is definitely stepping up with their Microphone. For me this Mic sounds really good and the integrated shock-absorbing shoe mount works well. I love the auto off feature, it shuts off automatically when I turn off my Cam and it goes to sleep too when my cam goes to sleep! The size is a bit big but it does not bother me at all.

[-10 dB] Could not be easier to use... especially set on auto ... one less thing to remember turning  it on and off... Used it at a party setting last night and I was bouncing back between normal and -10bd going from indoors and outdoors... I think I will add some bass in post to give it a more pleasing sound at least for my ear...

[Supercardioid] Like many others, I've been using Rode for on camera shotgun mike. It finally fell apart on me and I came upon this Azden. Most importantly, I think it has terrific audio capabilities, certainly on par or better than the Rode. But it surpasses the Rode in build quality. No more rubber band stabilizers that snap and/or wear out. This is a solid stabilizer system. Also - it turns on/off when the camera does - a feature not available on the Rode I had, only the more expensive model. And it takes AA batteries, not 9 volt, another improvement. It also has a low band filter and good gain settings. All in all, it has everything the "advanced" Rode mike has - for less money than the cheaper Rode, that has none of those features. It comes with a windshield, it doesn't seem to be appreciatively heavier or larger than the old Rode, either - unlike the upgraded Rode which is kind of huge for mirrorless cameras. So, yes, I strongly recommend this camera.

[Battery] I bought this so I could record drumline performances (and also for higher quality interview audio when a lav mic wasn't really an option).

I love the sound of this. I really like the +20DB option so my D7500 records the audio very quietly.

I did have to experiment on what to set the levels at for the D7500 mic sensitivity but once dialed in it's good.

[Supercardioid] You'd think one time of forgetting to turn on the microphone would be all it took to learn a lesson... apparently not, and that's why this mic is so great! It turns on when you start recording, so you don't have to worry about it. It also sounds good!

[Battery] I needed for a solid, not terribly expensive Shotgun Mic and several reviews led me to the Azden SMX-15. I am a full time professional photographer who is required to shoot quality video clips from time to time.

While I wish the mic didn't feel a little on the flimsy side (I worry about long term durability), the weight and overall performance is great. I've used it for several jobs thus far with no complaints.

[0.71 lb] This was my first microphone away from rode and it was a good move. The build quality is good, it functions properly and price isn't too bad. Only thing is the microphone does hit your eye if you're using EVF but no other complaints
