Honestly, I don't have that lens (not yet anyway) so I can't say for sure how it will work. I know its a bit heavy lens. But at the same time, knowing how this rail is made - it is quite sturdy, I don't think you will have any issues.Secondly, regarding battery grip, mounting the camera on this rail is exactly the same as mounting it on a tripod. A: The top rail is for forward/back movements and while I don't get the clack sound you mention it is definitely is not as smooth as the bottom rail which is for side to side movements. This is due to the different gear mechanisms used for each, I think it would be a better focusing rail if they had used the same gear on the top rail as the the bottom as it is butter smooth. What I did find with mine is that the end apps that hold the rails in position were loose and nothing on the tool they provide will tighten them.
