Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The main shaft at the umbrella 7mm? Included is a removable shaft 8mm?

A: The part of the shaft closest to the umbrella is 8mm. The other half can be 8mm or 7mm, as they give you both sizes that screw on/off. The ridiculous thing is that you can only put a head which needs 7mm half way up the shaft until you hit the 8mm section. In many cases not even close enough to go inside the diffusion panel. SO, if you need an 8mm shaft, this is a beautiful umbrella. If you need a 7mm shaft, I would not recommend this at all, particularly for the price. Photo really dropped the ball on this BS design. They should just have one version that is natively 7mm all the way up and one that is 8mm. What a dumb mistake.

Q: 2. will this fit a 46 Photek Goodlighter II umbrella?

A: It probably will. I have an original 46 goodlighter. I imagine it fits the newer models as well. You could always call Photek. They will answer any questions you have. I only used mine a couple of times.

Q: 3. will this work with a speedlight?

A: While this umbrella can work with a speed light, there is an alternate diffuser such as the Photek Hot Shoe Diffuser Kit w/o Umbrella (46") B&H # PHHSD5000, which has a shallower opening. https://bhpho.to/2LdXa7X

Q: 4. Hi, I have the Good AD600BM. Is this compatible or do I need the 7mm shaft? Or do I need a special adapter? Thanks so much for any help.

A: If you meant Godox AD 600, then I'd say it probably will be fine. I don't own one of those. The shaft is interchangeable. If you're worried that it's too thick, buy the thinner one. The umbrella is fantastic, and makes beautifully soft images

Q: 5. If I want double diffusion on my Softlighter, is this item just another single level of diffusion that then doubles when placed over the original one or is this one actually double and I would really only need to use this one if I want double diffusion?

A: With the Softlighter you place the Light facing backwards that's already one level of diffusion.

Q: 6. Could this be used with LED lights like the Godox UL150? I'm concerned about the front diffuser potentially catching fire.

A: The manufacturer says not for use with lights over 250w so a VL150 would be ok.

Q: 7. Why not use the sock version, will it not work with speed light? Also, hot shoe ? Shouldn't it be cold shoe ?

A: The standard Photek SoftLighter Umbrella with Removable 8mm Shaft (46 ), B&H # PHSL5000FG (with the sock as you describe it), is designed for use with monolight fixtures, not hot shoe speedlights. The sock as you state is centered around the umbrella shaft, and as most all monolights and/or studio strobes typically have built-in umbrella shafts and are designed to rest close to the center umbrella shaft, the sock is designed to wrap around the monolight or studio strobe and can then be sealed with Velcro to prevent light from escaping.Hot shoe flashes are not designed to fit onto light stands; as their name indicates, they are designed to connect to the hot shoe on the top of your camera. As such, to use a hot shoe flash on a light stand, a stand adapter or an umbrella adapter is required. By design, the umbrella shaft receptacle is below the head of the hot shoe flash, which is much taller and has the head of the hot shoe speedlight anywhere from 6-9 inches above the center umbrella shaft. There is no way the standard Softlighter diffuser cover would work with a hot shoe speedlight flash. The Softlight Hot Shoe Diffuser kit has a long vertical slit with Velcro that allows the taller hot shoe flash and umbrella adapter to all sit inside the umbrella and to then be sealed for usage. The item is called the Photek Softlighter Hot Shoe Diffuser Kit as it is designed for hot shoe flashes. The name of the kit is not in reference to the shoe mount adapter on which the flash connects (which would be a cold shoe); it is in reference to the flash type for which it is designed.

Q: 8. Is the Photek 60" Double Diffuser compatible with other brands 60" umbrellas? Is it compatible with Photogenic 60" umbrella ?

A: The Photek Double Diffuser for Softlighter (60") does not work with third party umbrellas. It is only made for the Photeck Softlighter (60").

Q: 9. I have a Godox AD600 strobe. Do I need a certain reflector to use with this modifier?

A: You do not need a certain reflector. You will get good results from the AD600 if you use it barebulb.

Q: 10. Is the diffuser attaches to the umbrella with velcro? I think I saw that in a youtube video, but I don't see any velcro on the outside of the umbrella on the product photos. So is there something to hold the diffuser, or only the corners of the umbrella holds the diffuser on it?

A: The diffusion is held in place by the grommets and the umbrella ribs.

[Fabric] I have been pleasantly surprised by this umbrella. With the diffusion panel attached to the front I get very photogenic light. I used it in an interiors shoot I did where the client wanted more of a artificially lit look rather then the natural light approach I often use with interiors. I have not used it for portraits yet but I expect equally nice results if I use it correctly. The detachable center rod is a very smart and useful touch. It can be cut in half essentially. It's made well and will last for many years I think. I liked it so much I bought a second one.

[Fabric] Last time I reviewed this Light modifier I gave it '3' rating because even with my AlienBees 320 I could not get sufficient light on the subject. Not sure what i was doing wrong but I decided to test this a gain 3 years later and had no problems. It could have been I was blocking the light somehow by improper placemnt ? It works fine now ! Beautiful diffused light at 1/2 power with subject 15 feet away with my AB's. No shadows whatsoever on the background which is only about 2-3 behind the subject. ISO 320 @ f5.6.

[0.35 lb] Wedding tog here.

I've had them all: Profoto RFi, Elinchrom, Paul C. Buff modifiers and ended up keeping a massive PCB octa that I barely use (only because it's cheap and has a grid) but sold the rest. Elinchrom Octa's were my favorite...

Enter Photek Softlighter... Perhaps my favorite modifier of all time for weddings due to it's size AND weight. I have a small scale at home and I weigh my setups all the time. I got down to the lightest setup ever, thanks to the carbon fiber boom handle and this softlighter.

The setup will be based on the amount of ambient light. During the day, I'd use a Profoto B2. More towards the evening, I'll use the Profoto A1.

My assistant never gets tired now :)

When shooting alone, I use the C-Stand. In most cases, you don't even need a sandbag unless you have wind...

[0.35 lb] The Softlighter diffuser 46kit is a high quality, light weight, quick and easy to setup. Very reasonable price for a product that increases the light quality of a small hotshoe flash or LED light source.

[Fabric] I use this with my AD200Pro with its bare bulb. I have it set up with the remote head (using a MagMod MagShoe) and cable, so there less weight at the top. There's no distortion of the diffusion fabric at all. Very soft light if kept within 4' or so. I've been putting this purchase off for a while, but then B&H had it on sale for $100. The only negative is that it takes a few minutes to put together. Not that difficult, just time consuming. Worth it for the quality of light that it puts out.
