Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens a true flat field macro suitable for use on a copy stand?

A: Yes, this lens is ideally suited for copy work. You can view the distortion characteristics on the data sheet located using the link below. a href= http://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/Photography/new/pdf/en/downloadcenter/datasheets_milvus/milvus250m.pdf target= _blank http://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/Photography/new/pdf/en/downloadcenter/datasheets_milvus/milvus250m.pdf/a

Q: 2. Is there any noticeable focus breathing when shooting video ?

A: 50mm lenses, even cheap ones, barely breathe at all. I would suspect you would need a laser microscope to measure the breathing on any Zeiss 50mm Milvus.

Q: 3. why is the milvus 50mm f/2M more expensive than milvus 50mm f/1.4 ? was thinking about buying, but dont know which one to get.

A: I'm pretty sure all macro lenses tend to be more expensive than their normal counterparts in the same focal length. This likely has to do with the focus helicoid it self being more complex since it needs to stay consistent throughout a considerably longer range. I chose it over the 50mm 1.4 because I needed the close focus ability for food shots and really like the recessed and smaller front element for backlit shots as well. So far this lens is a rock star, the build quality of this new line is peerless.

Q: 4. I have some sample photos I would like to upload on my review post, however, I can't find an option to upload a photo. Can anyone help me out with that?

A: In order to upload any sample photos take with the Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/2M ZE Macro lens for Canon EF, you may submit a product review here https://bhpho.to/3MGtgqO

Q: 5. Is there a mechanism to lock the helicod in place when not extended? Thanks.

A: We are unaware of any a mechanism to lock the helicod in place when not extended.

Q: 6. What is the differance between Distagon Optical Design and Planar Optical Design in Zeiss Lenses ?

A: The different names designate different optical schemes. The Planar design is used in Normal to Telephoto focal length lenses. The Distagon is a more complex designed and is used Wide Angle lenses.

Q: 7. I am a serious panoramic photographer, my question is how is this lens perform the sharpness at infinity? i have a nikkor 55mm f/2.8, i don't like it perform at infinity. Thank you!

A: The ZEISS Milvus 50mm f/2M ZF.2 Macro Lens for Nikon F has remarkable sharpness performance when focused at infinity.

Q: 8. How would this f2/M look in a medium shot during an interview in comparison to the f/1.4 ZE?

A: This is a difficult question to answer, since some of the differences are subjective. If judging contrast and sharpness, you can view the MTF charts in the technical data sheets located at a href= http://zeiss.com/photo. target= _blank zeiss.com/photo./a This will allow you to compare how the Milvus 2/50M appears at wide open aperture to the new Milvus 1.4/50. Aside from this, the main differences are in the DOF and out of focus qualities. In this case, neither is better than the other, it is a matter of your own tastes and needs.

Q: 9. Can this Zeiss lens be used on a Canon mirrorless (RF) camera with an adaptor?

A: Yes.

Q: 10. I have Otus 55...will this lens be equal/better/worse?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 50mm f/2M ZE Macro Lens for Canon EF is a macro lens and the ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is not. Optically the 55mm is a higher level line and is sharper.

[28.2mm] I absolutely love the CP.3 lenses. The 85mm is an absolute Beauty. Having a compact, lightweight, well designed, and optically beautiful lens is a huge selling factor for me. I don't buy lenses that aren't build well and these are tanks. Zeiss did an incredible jobs redesigning these. I highly recommend. I use them on the Red Komodo and will soon try them out on the Red Raptor, although I know they will work great with it. Definitely a must buy or rent depending on your job or project. Worth every penny

[C] This lens is the equivalent of having a set of CP.2 primes in the form factor of a zoom. There's zero focus breathing, beautiful bokeh, beautiful micro contrast. We just used this lens on an Fs7ii for a feature narrative film, and people have been commenting on how great it looks. I thought I would explain why: it's this lens. The focus is smooth, and we kept it mostly at an T4.5 except for a few scenes. You'll definitely want a focus puller if you're wide at 2.9. It's advertised at being a T2.9-3.9, but none of us could tell the difference really. It looked great at all ends of the zoom range. There was no discernible difference in sharpness wide or telephoto (like most zoom lenses out there). Just know that it's very large, and will weigh down your camera. In theory it would work for doc work, but would be a lot to carry, and would probably be intimidating toward subjects. For narrative work on a budget, I can't recommend it enough. it's better contrast, sharpness and focus breathing than the Fujinon MK series, and leaps and bounds better than any photo zoom lens. I can't recommend this enough.

[<0.01%] I got these as an upgrade to the Rokinon lens set I had, and they are crisp and look fantastic! I also plan to use them on a Movi type rig, and the light weight is what sold me on these over the competing Sigma and other brands.
I am keeping the Rokinons for when a client prefers the super soft mushy background look, the overall softness of those lenses will work for those folks.
But when I want a crisp clean image with a reasonable fast lens, I'll be using these. I

[f/20] Great lens. It was the first Zeiss Milvus I bought (have since also bought the excellent 25mmf1.4 and 85mmf1.4). It's been one of my main workhorses in rough places and it still feels like new, so great build quality. The optical quality is remarkable and the macro capability is definitely a big plus.

[f/20] This lens is my bread and butter. For all of my client work I need something with a consistent look across the entire aperture range. Up until purchasing this lens my primary client glass was a sigma 24-70 2.8, which although beautiful, got soft when zoomed in to 50mm and under performed in other areas.

Aside from the performance of this lens, there are two things I adore: It's construction and color consistency. Despite being incredibly light, this lens is built like a tank. I travel frequently and it holds up very well. Because Zeiss improved the color rendition in the CP.3 line, I often rent the 85 or 100mm for my b-cam and have a easy time matching up cameras.

Much of my client work requires cropping in substantially (thanks Instagram) and I can comfortably shoot this at it's minimum aperture of T2.1 for a tack sharp image that can be scaled up in post.

I think this lens' greatest competition is the Canon CN-E line, which shoots warm and renders terrible onion skinning on the bokeh. For me this is unforgivable, and I'm happy to see a neutral, clean image coming from the CP.3 line. Assuming this is the look you need, I'm not sure you can get a better lens in this price bracket.

[f/20] I've had this lens for a little over one year now and it's basically lived on my Sony FX9 and FX6 since the moment it arrived to my door. The Zeiss CP.3 35mm lens is the perfect size and weight to fit in my backpack for when I need to pack light but packs the same punch as any top of the line cinema lens.

The optics on this lens are just outstanding. Beautiful color renditions matched with a tack sharp image really help get any job done.

I couldn't recommend this lens, or any of the other CP.3 lenses, more. It will definitely always have its place in my kit.

[0.48 lb] I have to be honest, the price of the lens was for a long time an obstacle for me. I already own a 50mm 1.8 Nikkor, so spending over $1200 for another 50mm was really a struggle for me. I have spent days and days reading different reviews and experiences from different photographers... but in my heart I knew I wanted a Zeiss on my D750. As soon as I spotted the discount - I ordered!

To cut the story - it works perfect!! Brings out the full potential of that sensor. Mind blown with how colors are true and vivid. Sharpness - well, it is a known fact for a Zeiss, so it is not a surprise.

My wife noticed immediately that photos look 3D-ish compared to the ones I have taken with other lenses. And that was exactly what I was looking for.

Manual focus is very precise and EASY to use. I have used it only handheld so far and had a very small number of missed focus. Even my sister ( who doesn't use DLSR in real life ) took some great photos of me... spot on focus.

I was never into a macro, but this close focusing possibility really gives me more room to be creative. 1:2 ratio is just enough for me.

The lens is superb! I enjoy every single photo that came through this lens.

[3x] A gorgeous lens. The micro-contrast and sharpness I get with this is ideal for food and still life photography and for me, worth the price. I am happy with my investment and I can tell it will be the only 50mm lens I'll need for years to come.
