Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello! I am wondering how well would this head (as compared to a fluid video head) would work for occasional video taking of surfers? Quick moving subject under a lot of light. Thanks

A: If you're using a regular pan tilt head for video instead of a fluid head, then the smoothness of the footage will depend entirely on how well you can move the arms on your own. Starts/stops will be jerky. It probably won't be the best footage possible but it will do the job in a pinch.

Q: 2. I intent to use a Canon HF G20 and leave it in a fixed position to record billiard/pool stuff. Is there any reason the head will not be suitable. Or should I get a different cheaper Head?

A: I've been very satisfied with this unit. Absolutely no issues with stability. My equipment is Nikon, good luck!

Q: 3. What is the difference between this unit and the other Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod with MHXPRO-3W 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head Kit, besides the price? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1060591-REG/manfrotto_mt055xpro3_aluminum_tripod_stand_alone.html

A: The difference in the kit is how they are packed. With B&H # MAK055XPRO33, this comes in a single box. With B&H # MAMT055XP3K6, there is a separate box for the legs and one for the head. Otherwise, they have the same specifications.

Q: 4. I noticed that the arm for releasing the quick release plate has a Phillips head. Can it be replaced? Somehow mine has broken and I'd rather not throw away an almost perfectly good tripod. Thanks!

A: Contact Davis and Sanford directly (aka Tiffen). I own two D&S tripods, the Fusion and another one. On my other one, the quick release latch broke off and I searched high and low for a replacement. Didn't have any luck so I contacted Tiffen. They sent me a new latch no questions asked.

Q: 5. I use my tripod mostly for video. I'm looking to buy another because mine (a cheap one bought at that store that start with a 'W'... and ends in a 'T') pans so poorly. Does this one pan smoothly? Up and down. Side to side. And it looks like it has a crank handle that makes the head move up or down as the handle is crank. Is this correct? Thank you!

A: This tripod does a decent job panning and tilting, especially if you are on a tight budget. It works the best with small to medium sized camcorders (i.e. a Canon XA20). I've used these tripods for filming interview videos and conferences. It definitely does a better job than any cheaper tripods without fluid heads!

Q: 6. Hi-Does this kit include quick release plate that attaches to camera base or must that be purchased separately. Please let me know. Thanks!

A: The Manfrotto MK190XPRO4-3W comes with an included 200PL Quick Release Plate.

Q: 7. Is this the same as Vista Fusion tripod by Tiffen?

A: Tiffen owns Davis & Sanford

Q: 8. Anyone who has this tripod and head (MK190XPRO3-3W), can you recommend a decent quality tripod carry case (preferably a padded one) that this will fit into? It would need to be at least 6 deep, 6 wide and at least 29 long. There is one Manfrotto tripod bag (MBAG 75PN) that people say is a bit too small for this tripod; and the other Manfrotto bags are way too expensive for my budget. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A: I would recommend the Ruggard Deluxe Padded 35 Tripod case.It has two internal straps to hold the tripod from moving. Also, if you plan on using a heaver camera or lens with this Tripod, please look into getting the Manfrotto 200PLARCH-14 Architectural Anti-Twist Quick Release Plate with 1/4-20 Screw to eliminate Camera Creep/Slipage when using the Tripod in Vertical/Portrate mode.

Q: 9. Can this tripod be folded up and fit into the carrier bag without removing the handles?

A: It comes with a standard Manfrotto tripod bag, and it fits in the bag fully assembled. If it doesnt have this accessory, I suggest you might be looking at a 3rd party tripod, or vendor built bundle.Hope this helps.

Q: 10. How does this differ from B&H # MA190XPRO4Q5 (B&H Kit), apart from the price difference?

A: The MT190XPRO4 has a higher load capacity, and the MK190XPRO has a much shorter minimum height.

[Fluid Head] An overall excellent balance of strength, weight (it's light), and cost. The pan is surprisingly smooth for a tripod of this price but it's a little stiff, so given the light weight of the tripod, hanging a weight from the center hook might be a good idea if panning.
The center column crank was broken during shipment on the first one we received, but B&H replaced the tripod and we're very happy with this unit.
We have nicer tripods in our studio, but they cost over twenty times as much (honestly). For home use, of if you're on a budget, this is a nice tripod.

[Aluminum Alloy] This is my first ballhead. It fit in my budget. It meets my current needs. My rating is based on those facts. Capacity: There's no International standard to establish the rated weight of ballheads. In my informal test, the AF12544 holds my heaviest combination of equipment at any angle: the equipment is a relatively light Pentax K50, an old and moderately heavy Tokina SZ-X 28-200 f3.5-5.3 and a Yongnuo 560-IV speedlight. I've experineced slight drift when clamping the ball from a looser setting to lock down. When locking down from stiffer clamping, I have not noticed any impact. Controls: The controls are reasonably smooth, but not so much as to create joy. There is a reasonable range of tension on the ball release. Release is predictable and I have not experienced suddenly flopping equipment. The pan control is sometimes useful, sometimes in the way. Quick Release: The Arca-Swiss clamp/plate combination does not inspire sufficient confidence that I will use it with the video alignment pin removed: I tested that too. Without the pin, moderate force could sometimes slip the camera+plate out of the clamp when the clamp tightened everything short of pliers tight. I put the pin back in. Other: The bubble level on the plate might be useful for panning when your tripod head is already level and the camera doesn't have a built in level. It's not likely to be a use case for me. Conclusion: At the price, it might be the right product: Arca-Swiss compatibility makes for a longer term quick-release strategy; it holds reasonable amount of weight reasonably steady; the controls are reliable.

[Aluminum Alloy] It works great! Light and easy to carry. It has a handle to carry around. Built seems good. A good budget tripod.

[4] Excellent value, but lots of plastic parts, so long term durability is unknown/suspect a little. Seems solid and the fluid head is great. The mount is a little under-built, so when switching from landscape to portrait view it feels a bit weak and cheap, but it's a minor issue.

[Fluid Head] I've NOT found any better under two pound super-light weight tripods than these. My B cams are mounted on them. Dependable sturdy legs and unusually good fluid heads yet so inexpensive and with a 5 years warranty! The negative: non-removable heads.

[Flip Lock] I'm using it for a spotting scope rather than photo gear, but it holds securely and operates smoothly.
