Fotodiox Macro Focusing Helicoid Nikon G Dx Lenses Dslr

Fotodiox Macro Focusing Helicoid Nikon G Dx Lenses Dslr
  • Product Code: eq180239

$329.85 $527.76

The FotodioX Macro Focusing Helicoid allows a Nikon G or DX lens to be used as macro lens with variable magnification ability on a Nikon DSLR camera body. It features a leaf spring design to hold the lens tightly to the camera body, ensuring there is no play between the camera and the lens. In addition, the helicoid features an all metal design and a polished surface for smooth mounting. Although the lens will fit physically, automatic diaphragm, auto-focusing, and other functions will not operate correctly while using this adapter. In this case "stop-down mode" will need to be used when metering since the lens does not have the ability to have its aperture controlled by the camera. You can shoot with manual mode or aperture priority mode.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Given that there are no electrical connections passed between body and lens, couldn't it also be used on film SLRs?

A: Yes, you can mount the FotodioX Macro Focusing Helicoid (Nikon G & DX Lenses to Nikon DSLR Body) on SLR camera bodies.

Q: 2. Can I use the z mount 105 micro lens with this bellows?

A: Yes, you can use the FotodioX Macro Bellows for Nikon Z with the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S.

Q: 3. How much extension can this helicoid provide?

A: The extension provided by the FotodioX Macro Focusing Helicoid (Nikon G & DX Lenses to Nikon DSLR Body) is approximately 3".

Q: 4. Two questions: 1) is it necessary to use a lens designated as macro with this bellows and 2) if using a lens without a manual aperture ring (Nikon), it will stay wide open, is that right?

A: Question 1, no you don't need to use a macro specific lens with the bellows. Question 2, the bellows unit doesn't any sensors on it to connect with your camera, meaning everything is going to be manual. The rails on the unit do get in the way at times if you plan on using a ring flash.

Q: 5. Does this maintain correct infinity focus?

A: Once the helicoid is adjusted from its original position, infinity focus will no longer be available. When the adapter is in its original position, the infinity focus function will work.

Q: 6. The person who left a review for this product said he could not connect his 105mm macro, what is the reason for this ?

A: This is old school macro. I would not use this with a macro (micro in Nikon terms) lens. It is intended to be used with a fixed focus standard lens such as 50mm for example. Nikon used to make these before they started making dedicated micro lenses. The bellows allows for the standard lens to be run further out from the film (sic) plane and thus magnify the image. All coupling to the body will be lost thus electronic diaphragms are disconnected. All lenses that precede the G series should be OK because you can manually set the aperture. I suspect setting exposure entails some Kentucky windage along with trial and error. G series lenses would have to be set based on a wide open aperture and just live with the reduced depth of field.

Q: 7. Will the FTZ adapter work on this?

A: You could mount Nikon F lenses on the FotodioX Macro Bellows for Nikon Z with the Nikon FTZ adapter. When the lens is on the bellows there is no communication between the camera and the lens. So it is best to use lenses with an aperture ring.

Q: 8. Will this lens adapter enable autofocusing with Nikkor D type lenses?

A: This lens adapter is manual focus only.

Q: 9. How is the aperture controlled?

A: The following unit is a manual adapter, so lens functions that rely on electronic communication with the camera body (autofocus, AE metering, image stabilization, etc.) will be disrupted. 'Focus-By-Wire' lenses (such as Canon's STM or Nikons AF-P) requires power to engage the manual focus rings on the lens, since manual lens mount adapters do not power the lens, those lenses will not be able to focus. Set your exposure manually or meter using your camera's Aperture Priority (stop-down) mode. If your lens does not have a manual aperture control ring, the lens aperture will revert to its default position, which depending on the lens is either stopped down to its largest f-stop or opened up to its smallest f-stop.

Q: 10. What is the weight of this item, and what are its dimensions?

A: 70mm diameter x 20mm thick and weighs about 8oz.

[0.6 lb] I can not find anything to complain about with these extension tubes. They do the job they are intended to do perfectly, with no wiggle created between the lens/body. Of course, there is no glass to worry about so optical clarity isn't an issue. Aperture controls still work fine, although I can't speak for focus. I'm not really sure why you would want auto focus when doing macro work with an extension tube anyway :).

[Nikon F] Works better than I thought it would for the price. I am using it for insects and flowers and it is amazing!

[Brass] Worked as expected after return of first received. All products have some quality control problems as this one did. BH Photo was excellent in their handling of my return and reshipment of a new product. All cost free. All but one other review rated this as very good. They had a similar problem to my own.

[Brass] A lot of bang for the buck. It will not work with the lenses from DSLR camera systems unless they have an ability that allows you to manually adjust aperture, otherwise with a regular SLR lens, they work well . Best results are with a 45 to 60mm focal length lens, or longer. At about 50mm focal length, you are focusing at about an inch from the lens, as the image reflects. With the bellows retracted a bit, the third image was the result. With a 135mm focal length lens, you are focusing at about 5 to 6 inches with bellows at full extension with a field of view of about 1?? inches to 2 inches. As with all Close up schemas, you lose depth of field, but if you shoot coins, rings/ jewelry, or smale scale models, this is a perfect combination. Once set up, it is pretty much a WYSIWYG with an ISO of 125 or 100. Since the camera is unable to hold the iris open while you are composing, if you stop the lens down after composing, then you can adjust your ISO accordingly to improve depth of field, but you will need to resort to a tripod. The only down side is the measuring scale is that it is glued on rather than etched in the rail. A minor detail unless you require compious complete notes to save time on reproducing results as you are more likely to be advancing or reversing the bellows with the left hand knob rather than analyzing a measuring scale. If the right knob set screw is allowed to drag slightly on the rail, you right hand to operate the camer and the bellows will hold position. If you take this into the field, it is not indestructable, however if the camera and bellows are mounted to a rail and the rail then mounted to a tripod, you should do okay if you are careful and mindful of the physics of levers. Also decent lighting of the subject is essential. Relying on the light you can constantly throw on the stage will give you the most predictable results without undue shadows or nasty surprises.

[Brass] I've taken good pictures of very small objects with this tube kit. My regular lenses are more powerfull, there lots of pictures I can take now.

[0.6 lb] This very well made device allows you to mount any Leica-M mount lens to your Z6. That alone is interesting, but the kicker is that this little ring also has an internal helicoid, which extends the close focus range of your lenses. Instead of being stuck with the typical 0.7-1 meter MFD, this reduces that by about half. It's like you get all new lenses! I particularly enjoy using my very old Leica thread mount lenses on my Z6. Quite fun, and a totally unique look. Highly recommended.

[0.6 lb] Giving this 5 stars because these do what they are designed to do. I was using these with my 70D 50mm 1.8 & 16-35 II. At first the 13mm tube did not establish a connection to my lens but the rest worked fine. After reconnecting my lens 3 times it worked and works every time. The build is solid and they fit firmly to the body and lens. For just under $50 this is a great buy.

[0.6 lb] Had an older bellows that we used with our F2 for extreme close-up work but it would not fit our D series camera because the camera hand hold prevented the bellows housing from rotating to engage the mount. This one worked fine and we are again taking very close up macro catalog shots. Just like the older model, this is 100% manual and some lenses just will not work because there in no aperture ring on the lens. Make sure the lens you want to use has a ring for manual use otherwise it will revert to the smallest aperture the lens has available.
