While this 5-bay RAID array has a capacity of 40TB, please bear in mind that it's usable capacity may vary depending on the RAID mode selected. By default, the Mobius utilizes JBOD mode and the installed drives function as separate drives. Configure your array in RAID 0 to utilize striping for optimum speed but no redundancy. Or, utilize RAID 5 for speed and redundancy, ensuring your data can be recovered should one drive fail. Employ RAID 10 for optimum security without sacrificing speed, reserving one drive as a hot spare. Switching between the different modes is done using the integrated mode switches on the hardware controller.

  • USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1/3.2 Gen 1: up to 325 MB/s
  • FireWire 800/IEEE 1394b: up to 100 MB/s
  • eSATA: up to 325 MB/s

    • 40TB capacity (formatted capacity will vary depending on the RAID mode selected
    • JBOD (default), RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 3, RAID 5, RAID 10, and Combine (Span)
    • Configure the hardware RAID mode easily using mode switches

    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it possible to install two 8TB drives in RAID 0 on this unit ? What's the max storage capacity on RAID 0 ? Thanks a lot in advance. Roberto.

A: I just installed 2 8tb seagate enterprise drives 2 days ago in a raid 1 setup. Only issue was connecting through USB instead of FireWire to get the drives into that configuration. Company walked me through it. They have great support. This is my second raid setup after buying the empty units. Very pleased.

Q: 2. Does this act as a plug and play drive or does it require software on an OS? I'd like to use this for and off-site backup for my Synology NAS using EXT4 via USB.

A: Hi, it is plug and play and will be recognized as an external hard drive. There are no special drivers required. Thanks! Oyen Digital Support

Q: 3. IS OYEN DIGITAL MOBIUS 80 TB compatible with 2019 M ACBOOK PRO ?

A: Hello, yes it is compatible with the 2019 MacBook Pro. You will need an adapter to connect directly to the Thunderbolt 3 port of the computer, such as BH #APMJ1M2AMA or BH #PEUSB33CA06. Thanks! Oyen Digital

Q: 4. Can 5 (WD Red) 6TB be used fully successfully, or is it limited to 4th drives?

A: From the manufacturer website, there is no mention of a limit on the site, nor in the manual. They sell a 40TB version which would use 8TB drives, and a 30TB version which would use 6TB drives. So, it would make sense that WD Red 6TB drives would be find. I have submitted the question to the manufacturer.

Q: 5. Can this device support two RAID 1 arrays, each being used on a different operating system(Mac & Win)

A: I use mine as JBOD. Has worked great for around a year so far. Very quiet. I use Mac.

Q: 6. HDD RPM and cache?

A: The hard drives are Seagate Enterprise ST6000NM0024. They are 7200RPM and have 128MB or cache.

Q: 7. Is port multiplier required on USB 3 port for this to work?

A: No, the Oyen Digital Mobius 5-Bay FireWire 800/eSATA/USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure BH #OY3R5EB3M does not require a port multiplier, it will work as it should with a single USB 3.0 port.

Q: 8. Otra is posible to buy an A.C. Adaptor extra?

A: Nosotros no vendmos el AC adapter para este articulo.

    Q: 9. Can this enclosure support 2x 10TB WD gold ?

A: Two 8tb WD defintely work. I did see a few vendors, by google, selling a 20tb version but with seagate hard drives so i assume WD wouldnt be any different but cannot verify. Manual doesn't mention max per bay capacity either.

Q: 10. How easy is it to swap out a drive? Are the drives attached to the trays with screws? Also, how loud is the fan?

A: The fan is very quiet. Its not very noticeable in a studio setting.

[40 TB] i just bought this because I was having a lot of trouble with my OWC Thunderbay 4 bay with Thunderbolt 3. My drives were randomly getting ejected for no reason. There's some kind of mysterious problem with either the OS or the enclosure. Anyway I went out and got this guy and I really like it so far. Nice solid design. Quiet fan. It's relatively fast with the TB2. I've only had it for about two weeks so I don't know if I'll have the power supply problem a few others have mentioned but so far so good.

[2x Fans] I have 3 computers at home and one of these hooked up to each one. It makes backups easy and tb sized drives can be moved between the machines. Makes life easier.

[14 x 10 x 7.9"] I’ve had it running as Time Machine for about a week. So far, it’s flawless. It’s much quieter than the Dropbox D5 which it replaced, which wouldn’t work with my Mac M1.

[2x Fans] I have three of these, one fan became a bit noisy, the others are fine. Performance is solid, easy to install drives. I use them with SSDs, software RAID 0 and RAID 1 hard drives, no issues.

[2x Fans] We bought this two years ago and have been using it for our archive drive. Presently we have 3 - 4TB WD Red PRO HDD's in it working in a RAID 5 setup so we have a bit of a fail safe. The speed is more than adequate for an archive drive, we're getting full functionality of the drives, and we've had no issues with any of the ports. When the firmware update came out a year (or so) ago, the product was finally able to be set to not go to sleep (which had been a problem) but there is a time-setup for setting the device to go to sleep if it's not used within x-hours. My intentions are to buy one of these for my home, it's extremely cost effective and my own professional photography could benefit from such a condensed system to contain all of my data. The software is semi-archaic, but if I can sort it out anyone can.

[40 TB] Good company. Got a qualified tech on the phone quickly. Rep tols me this unit has a faster processor than the five bay. I bought both. In this unit I have two 3tb drives, raid 0 that I video edit with. The five bay mobius is my backup system with all 4tb drives. Very happy with my expanded system. Also, my 2008 mac pro got a great boost when I purchased the Sonnett PCIe card that holds two SSD drives as my new processing drive. It has two eSATA ports that I plug these units into.

[Aluminum] Looking for more storage and data protection/reliability of a more advanced RAID and this enclosure fit the bill. With good drives at low prices, and the flexibility this enclosure allows (including easy swap of drives) this is now my main image drive (yes, with nightly backups and cloud storage, just in case) and I can use the swappable drive features to put projects - video in particular - on different drives as needed. Add in B&H free shipping (next day since I'm in Philly) and it's a great combination.
