[DVD-R] CMC took over Taiyo Yuden; the inventor of CD. For years TY produced high-gloss 'watershield' discs which were both glossy and had very vibrant color. Now, when CMC took over, I purchased some of their glossy discs (other ones - not this specific one), and was very unamazed by them. They A) did not have as vibrant colors; blacks were not as deep - slightly gray - and all colors were lighter and not as sharp. But worse, drying time was much longer; you couldnt put it in a sleeve right away, or it would stick to the sleeve, and ink would run onto the 'window'. I happened to notice that the coating was slightly grainy (bumpy) compared to TY.I thought that was it, and left not the most positive review. Then I tried a pack of these. I had bought a few different kinds from CMC to try out, and this one really seems to be like the original TY. The colors are deeper/sharper and more vibrant. But above all, it is instantly dry; even if you give it a strong rub, the ink doesn't go anywhere. (And the other one you didn't have to rub strongly at all...). So apparently there is a difference in the coating solution; these cost close to twice the price - they are not cheap. (The others come in shrink wrap; these in hard containers. The others 100 to a pack; these 50.) I dont know why there isn't any mention of any of this; perhaps you're just supposed to figure it out from the price. All in all, you have this review. Now, regarding the 'watershield' business, TY was not water-proof either; if it got wet, the ink ran - even long after printing. Maybe it's better than other discs; I haven't made a scientific study. But these are definitely nice, glossy and etc. as I've mentioned. So if you're willing to spend more, they may be worth it; these are perhaps the nicest ink-printable discs you can get (unless you specifically want matte). Though it would be nice if they would find a way to bring down the price.
