The DPA d:facto MMC4018VL Supercardioid Vocal Microphone Capsulefrom DPA d:facto MMC4018VL Supercardioid Vocal Microphone Capsulefeatures an isolation-optimized polar pattern and is designed to augment the human vocal range. It can be used to capture speech and vocals in sound reinforcement applications such as for stage, recordings, and more.

The capsule provides an applicable opening angle around the center axis comparable to a cardioid, which means that a pleasant tolerance around the center axis is obtained for the singer. In addition, the rear rejection is higher than other supercardioids, and the rear lobe opening is extremely uniform and controlled.

You can combine the d:facto MMC4018VL Linear Supercardioid Microphone Capsule with any of the d:facto adapters for wireless systems or the d:facto handle for wired use (sold separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the receiver transmit static when the mic is off?

A: The receiver in the Sennheiser XSW 1-825-A UHF Vocal Set with e825 Dynamic Microphone System should not output static when it is not paired with the microphone transmitter. However, as it operates on open channels, it could be subject to RF in the area when unpaired, which could potentially manifest itself as audio static.

Q: 2. can i use it in europe , voltage problems maybe?

A: Voltage should not be a problem since the power adapter works on 100-240 volts. However, you need to check if the operating frequency ranges are OK for your region in Europe. That by itself would be the reason to buy in Europe so that you can make sure you are operating within the local law and allowable frequency spectrum.

Q: 3. if I place this device 18 away from my mouth, what is the gain level to reach -12db, and at what gain level before I can hear self-noise?

A: I don't know but this mic is the best mic I have used on this recorder!!

Q: 4. The exact diameter and length of the mic isn't listed. I'm trying to find a foam screen for this mic. I'm aware the mic comes with a windscreen. Can anyone help me out?

A: The Zoom SSH-6 has a 1 diameter. It is also about 6 long. The Auray WSF-2216 (B&H # AUWSF2216) is currently the best available option. It is a bit longer than 6 , which means you will probably have to cut it slightly to fit the microphone.

Q: 5. I'm wondering: is the SSH-6 as good as the SGH-6 in terms of directional 'power'? Or do i need to move it closer to the subject than with the SGH-6?

A: I conducted several tests using both the SGH-6 and the SSH-6. The SSH-6 is 1 inch longer than the SGH-6. The end of the microphone was moved back by 1 inch for each SSH-6 test. So, the distance from the end of the microphone to my mouth was always the same for both. I conducted the tests at 6 inches, 1 foot, 2 feet, and 3 feet. In each case to achieve a level above 12 dB but below 6 dB I adjusted the gain on the microphone. In all cases the two microphones required the same gain. The side stereo level on the SSH-6 was set to 0 dBfor all test. So, I would say to your question, Yes, the power and beam for the shotgun portion of the two microphones are the same.

Q: 6. What's the max dB SPL this mic can handle? thanks

A: A maximum SPL rating for the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule for H5, H6, U-44 and Q8 has not been provided by the manufacturer.

Q: 7. What are the exact dimensions of the ssh-6 microphone?

A: Exact dimensions for the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule for H5, H6, U-44 and Q8 have not been provided by Zoom.

Q: 8. Is the SSH-6 compatible with the Zoom F1? I have seen both yes and no. If so, does the F1 give customization options to change amount of ambient input like the H6?

A: yes just tried the F1 and SSH-6 combo and this is possible. By cycling through the REC LEVEL button you control the side mic level. Options are StGUN OFF, StGUN 30, StGUN 60, StGUN 90, StGUN 120, StGUN 150

Q: 9. Is it possible to record the M and S mics on separate channels for matrixing in post? Can you do this with the Q8? Thanks in advance.

A: There is an option to either enable or disable the mid-side matrix. If you disable it and you record in MOV+WAV format, one of the WAV channels will be the shotgun mic and the other will be the side mic. Please note side is a single source in a figure-8 pattern, not two different sources (left and right side). If you are going to do post-processing and want to control the ambient sound in the mix, definitely disable the matrix. It is quite straightforward then to mix in the ambient sound in post production. You may have to split the stereo WAV file, depending on what DAW you are using.

Q: 10. Does this mic record to three tracks; the mid to one, and the stereo side to two? If not, how would one go about mixing dialogue with ambient sound in post?

A: It is only 2 tracks. The mono mic will pick up the dialog as any shotgun would straight ahead. Then the desired amount of side can be mixed in accordingly.

[Supercardioid] I own several mics from A-Z you name it I got it ! But there's something special about the Nd 96 that I use for my band . The vocals sounds very clear and my lead singer loves it . As always B&H is a great place to buy from and fast delivery.

[0.13 lb] For over a decade I used a Shure SM58 for live performances. While it worked well for singing, audiences would have trouble understanding me when I was just talking in between songs. The E945 provides an added clarity that really highlights nuance when singing and everyone in the venue can now understand me when I talk between songs. It's a very good microphone for live shows.

[0.13 lb] For several years I've been pretty outspoken about preferring (any) Sennheiser handheld (835/45, 9, MD etc).. over their Shure counterparts. I've got a deep voice, but there's a significant amount of fry and rasp that comes through. (I do voice over/podcasting/comedy.. not a singer.. just to clarify).

But going back to what I was saying, the classic SM58 for example, its a good and solid mic, but for my voice.. it turns into a tug-of-war trying to tone down some of the really harsh tones that no one wants to hear for voice over, podcasting etc..

So I was pretty skeptical of the SR117.. I knew there was a lot of hype about it's flat response being extremely easy to EQ, but I've never owned a handheld condenser.

Now.. I'm never looking back. No background noise cleanup. It picks up my voice and only my voice even in a room with quite a bit of ambient sound, but it even seems to TAME some of that same uncomfortable grit/rasp/fry I was previously talking about. I don't know if it's because there's finally balance between the lows in my voice with that fry, or if this mic is just great at cutting back on sibilance.

But in either case, the amount of EQ needed to get this thing to the same ear-friendly experience as my go-to Sennheiser 945 was mind blowing effortless. I genuinely cannot believe Earthworks considers this to be a budget option, and if you're needing something for live or studio, I'll gladly throw my vote in for the hype of this microphone.

I haven't used it in a live setting, but when I turn on all of the fans, lights, computers etc in my studio.. the ambient room levels are extremely high, and if it's rejecting ALL of them with ease, I can only imagine it would handle the same feedback rejection in a live setting where the vocalist doesn't need anywhere near the amount of gain I use for just talking.

[Supercardioid] I got this for doing interviews for an art photography project, and it works great. The sound is rich and well rounded with very little ambient intrusion due to the excellent side rejection. I am recording with a four track recorder strapped under my DSLR and then feeding it back into the camera. The person who does my photoshop was supper impressed with the quality and commented how much better it sounded that the broadcast quality video rig.

[Supercardioid] These sound great and are very rejective to feedback. Much more powerful than our old EV ND757's. We purchased 6 of them.

[0.6 oz (18 g)] The SR117 was marketed on its strength at rejecting plosives. ...It's not great at it, at best it's as good as a standard stage dynamic. SO there's no special sauce. However, you might be able to mitigate with aggressive use of a low cut. However, beyond that, I really like this mic because it is very much a blank canvas, it can take EQ extremely well and can give you some of that studio mic tone in a handheld.
