Designed to provide a wealth of control over out-of-focus quality and to enhance bokeh, the Laowa 105mm f/2 STF Lens for Sony Afrom Laowa 105mm f/2 STF Lens for Sony Ais a short telephoto prime designed for full-frame Sony A-mount cameras. The unique optical design incorporates an apodization (APD) element, as well as two separate diaphragms—8- and 14-blade—to provide separate adjustment over the bokeh as well as the exposure and depth of field. This APD element functions as a radially graduated neutral density filter, and as such limits the light transmission to a T-stop value of 3.2, while permitting the depth of field and selective focus qualities of a true f/2 design.

Alongside the unique attributes of the APD element, the lens also incorporates three low dispersion elements and one extra refractive index element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing, as well as produce a great deal of overall clarity and sharpness. The lens is also characterized by its manual focus, manual aperture design, that provides a wealth of control over focus and exposure to benefit working with the APD element.

Short telephoto prime designed for full-frame Sony A-mount cameras, this lens can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.

Optical design incorporates an apodization element that helps to improve the quality of bokeh. This element, which resembles a radially graduated ND filter that tapers from clear in the center to more dense around the edges, produces more circular out-of-focus highlights for more pleasing selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.

To control the effect of the apodization element, two separate diaphragms are incorporated in the lens' design: a 14-blade diaphragm that works mainly in conjunction with the APD element to control bokeh, as well as a standard 8-blade diaphragm at the rear of the lens design to control the overall light transmission and affect depth of field.

Due to the incorporation of the APD element, the lens offers an effective light transmission value of T3.2, while the f/2 designation relates mainly toward the potential for selective focus and depth of field control.

Beyond the APD element, the lens also features three low dispersion elements and one extra refractive index element, which combine to limit chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range and contribute to a high degree of sharpness and clarity.

A manual focus design permits fine-tuned control for focusing as closely as 3' away with a maximum magnification of 0.16x.

Two manual aperture rings enable you to adjust both the exposure-affecting diaphragm as well as the APD-affecting aperture.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does it attach to the lens ????

A: screws into the lens like a filter. 46mm and 62mm adapter rings included. If your lens takes a different size, then you will step-up rings.

Q: 2. How does it attach to the lens ????

A: Just screw the adaptor ring to the front thread of the lens. 2 adaptors of diameters 46 and 62 mm are included in the package. The dia 46 mm ring fits the Oly 60mm macro lens and the 62 mm ring fits the 12-40mm 2.8 and other lenses of the same diameters. If your lens is a different diameter, you will need a step down ring.

Q: 3. Will this flash work a a Panasonic LUMIX G7 with a Panasonic 30mm macro lens?

A: It will work manually. You will not have TTL.

Q: 4. Will this mount to the Panasonic DG Macro 45mm 2.8 ?

A: Yes this will fit and function on that lens.

Q: 5. Do they have separate hot shoe hook ups, for each light? I would like to use the Really Right stuff bracket.

A: No, they don't have shoes, just the power unit.

Q: 6. New to flash here. What is the maximum possible camera to subject distance for adequate illumination?

A: Twin flashes are not made for covering great distances. They are mainly made for macro photography, extreme close ups of things such as flowers, bugs, and bugs on flowers. As a rough estimate the Olympus STF-8 Twin flash should be fine in a range up to 8-10 feet at the most. If you are looking for more in a distance range up to 40-50 feet, the Olympus FL-900R would be a better option. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/2h05lsh

Q: 7. an this be mounted on the 12-100mm 72filter threads? Would a step down/up ring be needed?

A: The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash is designed for use with macro lenses; specifically, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30 f/3.5 Macro Lens, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens, and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens, and comes with the 46mm Ring Adapter and the 62mm Ring Adapter. It is not designed for use on the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO Lens, which uses the larger 72mm filter thread size. If you choose, you may purchase the Sensei 72-62mm Step-Down Ring, B&H # SESDR7262, along with the 62mm adapter to connect the flash to your lens, but you may experience vignetting when using this setup on your lens.

Q: 8. Does this offer full flash TTL support on Panasonic S1 and S1R cameras ?

A: TTL would not be supported on the Panasonic S series mirrorless cameras.

Q: 9. Flash will not fire on the OM D I mark II. Is there a setting buried in the menus that has to be changed?

A: By any chance do you have the camera set for STACKING tr SILENT SHUTTER mode? if yes go to SHOOTING MENU 2 then go to AntiShock/Silent press the OK button and then scroll down to SILENT MODE SETTINGS then scroll to the right and then scroll down to select FLASH MODE and set to ALLOW. If that does not resolve the issue please contact Olympus Technical Support 1-888 -553-4448

Q: 10. Can the flash heads be removed from the mounting ring for more lighting choices?

A: The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash Heads are fixed to the cables connected to the pack but it does have cold-shoe mounts, so that allows you to extend the height of the flash as well as to distance it further away from the subject for better light diffusion.

[8.6 x 5.3 x 5"] I took a big gulp at the price, but bought this flash because I love close up photography, and have found lighting to be challenging. I really love the many combinations of flash you can set for these 2 units, and the results are fantastic! They are a bit fiddly for bigger or arthritic hands, but once you get them set up, they are easy to use.

[0.16x] Using this on my Sony a7rii. to say that this lens is sharp just doesn't cut it. you really can't describe the sharpness in words! Build quality is top notch and it is very easy to manually focus by using the focus peaking & magnification. amazing value!

[Sony A] I am so glad I purchased this as soon as it came available, and whether coupled with my 60mm macro or 50-200mm+25mm ext tube I am getting great well lit images first time out. The lighting permutations are extensive offering various ratios between the heads or manual outputs down to 1/125th. The clip on diffusers do a good job of softening the light and improving coverage at 1:1 magification. It comes in a well made case and Rings to fit the 60mm which I own plus the 12-40 & 40-150mm Pro lenses that I don't but with the purchase of an inexpensive step down ring it also fits my 50-200mm+25mm ext tube with no sign of vignetting.

[23° 16'] I have struggled with using regular lights of all kinds for macro photography. The first pictures I took with the STF-8 demonstrated why I needed this product. Results were outstanding. The design is well executed. The size of the components are a bit of a challenge for someone with large (old) hands. The included case is just right to protect and organize the components. I believe this will be a very popular component for Olympus macro shooters.

[8.6 x 5.3 x 5"] Sharp subjects and fabulous bokeh. Lens is solid metal. Focusing with the Sony A6300 is easy using the camera's highlighting feature. I suspect focusing with a DSLR might be difficult unless you use the screen and magnification.

[105mm] Using the twin flash with the 60mm macro lens in the field even with a bit of air movement of subject allows for tack sharp images. TTL feature, manual focus and being able to fine tune flash power ratio and location between the two flashes allows for more pleasing images by limiting contrast and shadows. Need more time and practice but works flawlessly so far.

[0.16x] This twin flash is just what I needed to go with my 30 and 60mm Olympus Macro lenses with my Olympus EM 1 Mark 11. After reading the instructions, I attached it to my Olympus, set the flash and took some macro of a few thing. The photos were amazing !!!! Details were perfect !!!! No one could ask for a better combination that Olympus has provided than this, for Macro Photography. Jim, Charlotte, NC.
