Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this lens good angle of view for shooting products like cookware?

A: It's main purpose is very up close detail shots, usually bugs or flowers. If you're doing a full shot of an item you will have to stand a good distance back from the item or setup that you have.

Q: 2. Is the AF fast? (using 5D Mark III)

A: Yes, it is. I have used it for fashion shoots as well as for still-life photography and its focusing speed is very good.

Q: 3. If I use this lens to take a 1:1 (life-size) image, would I have less danger of camera shake than when using the 180 mm macro lens at 1:1?

A: The ratio is not life size per say but the reproduction ratio. Any time you are using a longer focal length, (100mm vs 180mm in this case) you are more likely to have shake. That more of a hand held thing though. Often times, macro shooting is done with some sort of support for stabilization or even a rack for stacking shots. Personally,I hand hold but use a flash to help with shutter speed due to the shallow DoF and using narrow apertures. The 3rd lens worth mention if you're looking at these is the Canon EF MP-e65. It is THE mac daddy of macro lenses but ONLY does macro. You can get up to 5:1 magnification but it's manual focus and is not an easy thing to use. That said, it pretty much unrivaled in the macro world for production lenses.

Q: 4. Is the Canon EF 100mm F/2.9L Macro compatible with the Canon RP? Thanks

A: As John said, as long as you have the Canon EOS EF To RF adapter it will work.

Q: 5. Has anyone used this for weddings? Wondering about getting it as a replacement for ceremonies in place of a worn out 24-105. Not sure if the macro ability affects how well it focuses at other distances. Thanks in advance!

A: The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is a great lens for wedding usage. Between the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens, and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens, all of the above telephoto lenses can be used for wedding photography as incredibly sharp portrait lenses, simply at varying focal lengths through the portrait focal length range. The benefit of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lesn for this purpose is it is also a macro lens, so you may use it for macro photography needs such as detail shots of the wedding rings, indentations, boutonniere, or other items at the wedding. As all of the lenses listed above focus to infinity, and all use Canon's L-series luxury performance optics, they all have awesome focus performance at all distances, simply with the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens having the additional benefit of close focus capability. None of the above lenses are as flexible or replacements for a 24-105mm lens, which can be used as a main/single all-around lens for weddings for everything from group shots to some portraiture, but the telephoto lenses listed above would be great and brighter for portraiture photography usage needs.

Q: 6. I have an old canon rebel exi. It came with a EFS 18-55mm lens. What do I need to buy for great grand baby pictures or just keep this lens and buy a flash. I will only use it for the baby. Please help!

A: The. 100mm lens your are looking at is a portrait lens as well as a macro lens. The 18-55mm that you have is a zoom. It gives you a fairly wide angle lens at 18mm and about what you see with the naked eye at 55mm. The 100mm allows you to make a slightly larger image than the zoom at 55mm. If you can afford it, it is an excellent lens and the one that pros use to do portraits such as those taken in a studio. The 100mm is a fixed focal length lens so you change what is in the picture by moving the camera closer or farther away. The 18-55mm can be used to zoom in and out to get the picture that you want. A flash is very nice for indoor photos because it supplements the available light. You can also do this by changing the ISO setting and making your camera more sensitive to the existing light. I have this lens and a flash. If you can afford both that is ideal. If you need to buy one or the other I guess I would go with the flash for use indoors.Another possibility might be to choose a lens like the 24-105mm zoom that will be less expensive but still good quality and you might then be able to afford the flash as well.I hope this helps.

Q: 7. I just purchased this lens from B&H. Any idea where I can get a User Manual in pdf format (portable on iPad)? Thanks.

A: Below is a link to the PDF version of the instruction manual as posted on Canon USAs website. Yossihttp://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/2/0300003522/02/ef100f28l-macroisusm-im2-eng.pdf

Q: 8. is this lens good for sports? BB & FB

A: Hi. The answer is absolutely not.It was recommended to me specifically for close up product shots for my jewelry. Even using it for that is limiting for longer necklaces.Great only for close up details. Hope this helps.

Q: 9. is this a good lens for Canon EOS 6D mark II?

A: Yes! I guess if I could only have one lens. It would probably be this lens. Great for portraits, yet can focus very close. It is very sharp as well wide open!

Q: 10. Hi. Despite the IS, is there other diference between 100mm Macro L and 100mm Macro Standard? Is the image quality the same?

A: Canon's L lenses are by far superior products. If you can afford to spend the extra money, I would definitely advise doing so.

[0.5 lb] I do some wedding photography on the side, and have always struggled with the detail shots (rings, etc.) -- even with my L glass. After doing some research on macro lenses, and learning that this lens also had portrait potential, I rented it for a weekend, and then immediately purchased it thereafter. There is very little editing to be done on photos shot with this lens, and the detail is crazy sharp -- so much so that I could not see the reason to purchase the IS. If you have enough light, you will be good to go! I took one super sharp photo after another of my 8-month old (and very active) nephew on a sunny day in the shade on an undulating boat. This was my first -- and favorite -- shot of the day. Processing included very minor skin smoothing and a saturation of the blues only. I highly recommend this lens!

[0.5 lb] Shot a lot of close ups of Christmas tree ornaments that have been in my wife's family for 4 generations. Couldn't have done it with any other lens, can't wait for outdoor flowers, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the Praying Mantises that spend every spring in my garden. This is not going to get the use of some of my other Canon lenses, but it fills out what I feel is a set that would not be complete without it.

[0.5 lb] The cavision focus gear ring fits evenly around the focus ring on my Panasonic AG-UG 180 camcorder. Also matches the Cavision focus puller gear and rotates evenly and smoothly. It has a convenient adjustable stop on the gear ring to set at the focus limit.

[0.5 lb] I'm using this lens in studio to shoot artwork. No need for the IS when shooting with strobe and using a tripod. Great lens, very sharp. Nothing negative to say about this lens.

[0.5 lb] I am a long time Canon product user and believer so I purchased this lens with complete confidence. I have not been disappointed. Tack sharp images are easier than ever with this lens which I have used both on land and underwater. It's a great companion with my 5dMKIII and I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking for a high quality macro lens.
