  • Home Grand: A Bechstein grand piano with a nice “not perfectly tuned” home grand character
  • Deluxe Grand: A Steinway Model D grand piano, rated one of the greatest grand pianos available. This particular one belongs to Sveriges Radio (Swedish Radio Ltd)
  • Upright: A Futura upright piano with a distinct “living room” character

The pianos were recorded using up to nine microphones per instrument, placed at various critical positions inside and outside of the pianos. The different microphone recordings were then stored in Radical Piano as separate sound sets

  • Vintage Mono
    • A single microphone placed outside the waist of the grand piano (or behind the upright piano)
    • For the Steinway grand piano we used an old-school mono ribbon mic with vintage characteristics and a narrow frequency response with the emphasis in the mid-range
    • For the Futura upright piano we used a vintage tube microphone
  • Ambience
    • Two microphones in AB configuration placed quite far away from the piano to capture the room ambience
  • Floor
    • Two pressure-zone microphones that lay flat on the floor just behind the front legs of the grand piano (and behind the upright piano). They add depth and richness to the sound and are best used as a complement to the other mics
  • Jazz
    • Two microphones in AB configuration placed just outside/in front of the piano. This gives a full-bodied sound with a wide stereo image and a less pronounced attack
  • Close
    • Two microphones in XY configuration placed close to the hammers. The close mics produce a distinct sound with a sharp attack, ideal for uptempo pop/rock

  • Velocity

    • Curve

    • Cent

  • Sustain Pedal: Control the piano sustain continuously from pedal up to pedal down. As on acoustic pianos, the sustain pedal is not either “on” or “off" - it can be “somewhere in between” as well. The Sustain function in Radical Piano simulates this behavior

  • Character
    • Range: Subdued to Agitated, in 24 steps, with natural sound at the 12 o’clock position. Subdued produces a warm and mellow tone whereas Agitated generates a brighter and significantly more-pronounced tone
  • 3-Band EQ
  • Ambience
    • Small Room: This simulates the acoustic reflections in a small room
    • Large Room: This simulates the acoustic reflections in a large room
    • Hall: This simulates the acoustic reflections in a medium-size hall
    • Theater: This simulates the acoustic reflections in a large hall/theater
  • Output
    • Width: Sets the stereo width of the piano sound
    • Compression: Controls the amount of compression applied to your piano sound

[Piano/Keyboard] I am amazed at how fast I received the order. The pedal works perfectly with our KORG keyboard. Thanks for the input and the great service.

[Piano/Keyboard] I've had my Korg SP-250 keyboard since 2009, and when the sustain pedal that came with it started to die, I was so worried! So I'm extremely relieved and happy B&H had it in stock. The delivery was swift, and it works perfectly!

[Piano/Keyboard] I don't usually write reviews but wanted to add one here about this specific bundle. Before ordering, I was skeptical of the stand that comes with it. With something like the VPC1 you don't want a flimsy stand. But looking at the pictures, it seemed to be identical to the K&M Omega, which is $200 and one of the most highly regarded keyboard stands on the market. I took a chance and placed the order. Sure enough, on the shipping notice I could tell the manufacturer was K&M. Now that it's sitting peacefully in my house, I can verify that it is indeed the K&M Omega. So yeah, for $60 more than the standalone VPC1, you get a $200 stand that is absolutely top-notch. As for the bench and the pedals ... BH should just chuck the pedals from the bundle because the Kawai comes with pedals. The bench is fine. Basic, but fine. Really, this is just one of the better values I've come across and I'm still kind of blown away. Thanks, BH. Oh, and while I'm at it, I might as well comment on the VPC1 itself. I bought it blind because I couldn't find one in a store to sample. I haven't played too many high-end digital pianos, but I can tell you, in the little bit I've played it today, this keyboard is lights-out phenomenal. I've never played a better digital keyboard. Bummer now is it's time invest in some better virtual pianos, like the Ravenscroft.

[Piano/Keyboard] Very convincing feel. Heavy, but to my mind that is a good trade off considering how much like a real piano this plays.

[Piano/Keyboard] The Kawai VPC1 has completely realistic piano action, with full length keys, Graded hammer weighting + counterweights
triple-sensor key detection, let-off simulation (allowing for the keys to be rapidly re-pressed before the key returns to fully up). The triple sensors add to accurate dynamic control while using virtual pianos such as Pianoteq. The stand included in this package is solid, and very well built with excellent fit and finish. Highly recommended!

[Piano/Keyboard] The Vpc1 is the best midi controller on the market. As per my research from other reviews on various piano sites, the included foot pedal really is garbage. Out of the box, it has a flutter which is visible in my daw and is audible. Shame on Kawai for not changing this pedal for all the years they have been selling the Vpc1. Many reviewers went through the process of returning the foot pedal and getting a new one only to find after a couple of weeks the noise and flutter was back. Mine is already on the closet shelf and my Roland rp 3 pedal arrives tomorrow along with a purchase of a Midi Expression iO to compliment the new pedal with the Vpc1. So if you buy the Vpc1, just know you may need to spend another $300 for the perfect setup.

[Yes] The first one I was sent had a connection problem where the power cord plugs into the base of the light. I contacted B&H and got a shipping label to send it back and was sent a replacement as soon as they got one back in stock. They made it very easy. The second light works great and my pianist at church really likes it. I would recommend this light.
