The Parsec Spectral Synthesizer from Propellerhead is a rack extension for Reason utilizing an advanced additive synthesis engine. The instrument is capable of producing a wide pallet of vast sonic possibilities spanning everything from crisp, digital-sounding leads to lush and evolving pad sounds, rich sonic textures, and instrument sounds.

At the heart of Parsec's sound lies two sound generators, each boasting up to 512 oscillators or partials per voice. The more partials the richer the harmonic content and the more detailed the sound. The generators offer 12 algorithms, from simple waveforms like sawtooth or square wave to algorithms modeling the spectral content of vibrating strings and complex overtones. To further sculpt the sound, each sound engine offers two modifiers, each offering 22 algorithms. Pick and choose from emulations of low-pass and high-pass filters, to more exotic offerings such as modifiers that mimics the effect of pulse width modulation, brick-wall band-pass filters and many more.

Parsec also offers a number of options for controlling its parameters including three envelopes, one of which can be set to loop mode. The comprehensive modulation bus allows you to effortlessly connect modulations and targets. The rear of Parsec includes several CV and Gate I/O for connecting to other devices in the Reason rack for added flexibility. There's even an audio input allowing you to use Parsec as an additive vocoder.

  • The “hearts” of Parsec are the two Sound Engines A and B
  • First in each Sound Engine is a Signal Generator which generates the audio signal
    • The Signal Generator could be compared to an oscillator in an “ordinary” synth, but is much more powerful and flexible. Each Signal Generator can generate up to 512 sine wave signals
  • The signal from the Signal Generator is routed to the Filter
    • The Filter is a combined low-pass/high-shelving filter with adjustable slope and cutoff frequency. The Filter can be used for attenuating or boosting the higher frequencies of the Signal Generator signal
  • The signal from the Filter is routed to Modifier 1
    • The Modifier affects the signal according to the algorithm you have selected. The algorithms could be various types of filters - or special purpose modifiers that affect the partials in the signal in various ways
  • The signal from Modifier 1 is routed to Modifier 2
    • Modifier 2 features the same array of selectable algorithms as Modifier 1
  • The signals from the two Sound Engines are routed to the Balance “mixer” where you can set the mix (crossfade) between the two Sound Engine output signals
  • The mixed signal is routed to the Amp Envelope, and then via the Reverb and Delay sections to the stereo outputs
  • The remaining sections in Parsec (Envelope 1, Envelope 2, LFO1 and LFO2) can be freely assigned to modulate destination parameters via the Modulation Bus section

[Yes] This amazing little unit is too good to be true. In its price range it blows away any soft synth version of the 70s/80s string machines. To me it has a lot of Oberheim/Roland/Mellotron sensibilities. So much right at your fingertips, being able to single out different instruments (cello, electric piano, etc), or combine them and add rich built-in effects for incredibly unique sounds. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Streichfett the minute Waldorf announced it, and B&H made it happen well before any other online retailers began shipping them in the US. Danke schn, B&H!

[Yes] Thought this would be too similar to my Modal Cobalt8 but this blows that out of the water. Sounds better, better effects and poly after touch. What's not to love? No regrets buying this synth. It's a great addition to any setup.

[Yes] A surprisingly nice sounding analog string emulation! Few controls but considerate ones. The effects sections reverb is nice and open sounding for strings. Sits nicely in mixes so far. Plus, unlike some vintage machines, this one's already in stereo!

[Synthesizer] Always been a big fan of those massive 80s string sounds that couldn't be any further from the real deal. This little box definitely delivers the goods. Also, since it's a module, stacking synth sounds has never been easier. Load up a huge bass sound, add the Waldorf, and your half way there to recreating those terribly awesome sounds found on almost every 80s movie ever made. Love it. Great Jon Waldorf team. Also, killer reverb and chorus on this unit.

[Synthesizer] The DSI Prophet 6 is probably the most compelling Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer on the market at the moment. Having learned synthesis on a Moog Modular in the 70's it is clear to me that this little beast is the real deal. A modern Analog Poly Synth wrapped in a very modern feature set. If you're looking for the classic Prophet 5 sound but did not want to deal with the unstable tuning headaches of the original then your ship just came in. The design and layout is superb, with every knob and control right there in front of you for instant changes in modulation with no menu diving. In fact, there are no menus, just like the Prophet 5, however I did not find that limiting once I got used to it. The included sound set is excellent and much better that the sound set that DSI shipped with the Prophet 8 IMHO. If you are lucky enough to find a store that actually has the Prophet 6 on display you can use the 'Play' function in the sequencer section to preview the sounds. For me, the warm analog sound of this machine is what made it stand out from the other DSI offerings, however it was the outstanding Arp/Sequencer and Digital Effects engine that convinced me that it was worth the heavenly price point. The ability to use the Poly-Chain feature to link two Prophet 6's together would create a 12 Voice, Analog tone monster to contend with. Add in a full size keyboard and integrated power supply and there not much to be desired here. The available third party software really helps to round out the potential for using this in the studio and integrating it into a DAW setup. The nicely weighted keyboard is both velocity sensitive and has after-touch but for some reason the P6 ships with a 49 note, four octave keyboard while its namesake and other DSI offerings like the P8 came with a 61 note keyboard. Not a show stopper for me but it is a curious omission on an otherwise brilliant, modern analog synthesizer. Highly Recommended.
