The Boutique TB-03 Bassline Synthesizer from Roland features the classic sounds of the original TB-303 in the palm of your hand. The TB-03 retains the same layout and controls as the original but with several enhancements. Utilizing Roland's Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, the unit recreates the liquid grooves of the magic silver box. The enhanced feature set includes a four-digit LED display, which allows for precision sequencing, while the on-board overdrive and delay effects unleash a torrent of twisted, tribal sounds capable of sending an audience into a frenzy. The TB-03 ships in a silver Boutique DK-01 case and can be powered via USB or the included four AA batteries.

You know when you hear a TB-303—a hypnotic, tribal sound that works best in dark, crowded rooms with big sound systems. Using the same ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology from the acclaimed AIRA series, the TB-03 accurately emulates the expressive, slippery sound of its older brother, and even adds a few surprises. Saw and square waveforms are available, along with all of the rotary control knobs that help shape the 303's unique character, including tuning, cutoff, resonance, envelop mod, decay, and accent

The TB-03 includes several enhancements over the original TB-303. Firstly, the four-digit LED display makes programming easier and more detailed, since you now have a visual representation of the value being edited. Then there are a variety of overdrive, delay, and reverb effects that dramatically change the mood and tone of the TB-03, going from smooth to spiky to squealing. Programming patterns is also easier thanks to added functions that include step write, shuffle, and fine tempo control. Finally, the inclusion of MIDI and USB ports mean that the TB-03 can send and receive control information and connect easily to computer-based DAWs

If you're familiar with the TB-303's programming method, then you'll feel right at home with the TB-03. The original Pitch and Time write modes are included, along with an added Step mode. Pattern programming is also enhanced by the LED display, which shows the current step in the sequence as well as showing fine tempo values (such as 125.5 BPM). The internal sequencer can be triggered externally via the trigger input, and you can even switch between write and play modes without stopping pattern playback, opening up many possibilities for live performance

The TB-03 includes MIDI In/Out ports and USB, allowing control information to be exchanged with other instruments and devices. This turns the TB-03 into a versatile controller, especially as you can use the CV/Gate output to control external analog gear and modular synthesizers. This level of control works both ways, thanks to the trigger input that lets external gear drive the TB-03's internal sequencer. Once connected to a Windows computer or Mac, both audio and MIDI data can be sent through the USB port

A: The Black Box model has only a USB 3.0/2.0 interface and spins @ 5400 rpm. The Studio Mini has, USB 3.0, Firewire 800 and eSATA interfaces and spins along @ 7200 rpm. So the Studio mini is the better choice for medium-to-heavy video editing and the Black Box is better suited for general storage. That said, I have edited hi-res footage (Avid DNxHD145) with the Black Box and had no issues whatsoever. But I might have just gotten lucky, too.

[2 (Saw, Square)] I use the JD-Xi to compose music rather than play live or jam. Although all the demo patches are of the EDM genre, the device is capable of so much more. It is wonderful for generating ideas quickly using the loop sequencer. The JD-Xi is not hard to learn, even though a fair number of functions require some shallow menu-diving (all parameters are immediately below the menu sections). Mercifully, each menu section remembers the last parameter you tweaked and brings it up first, which is a nice touch. Most importantly, there is a stunning variety of current and retro electronic sounds in this box. The drums are samples, but you have so much control over each drum sound when creating a kit that you'll be blown away. The other three parts (it's 4 part multitimbral) are true synthesizer engines, one analog (simple but nice), and two digital (very, very deep). Listen to some of the demos online to see if the sounds are in your wheelhouse. My main complaint is the lack of swing quantization (AKA, shuffle or groove) in the built-in sequencer. Most beats I naturally play have swing to them, and they don't sound right after quantization. There is no option to turn off quantization. My favorite beats so far have been made by setting the steps-per-bar to 12 (triplets). This can give beats a swing-like feel. Of course, if you use an external sequencer (the JD-Xi makes a great 4-part sound module), you can swing all you want. This is my first Roland instrument, and I have to say, I think the JD-Xi is destined to become a classic (like my MicroKorg). If you do your research and like what you see in the demos, I think you'll be very happy with it. 5

[3.9 lb] I grew up on the old Roland Junos, and was especially fond of my Juno 60. The sounds from that, the Juno 106 and Jupiter 8 were in a class by themselves. The System-8 brings all of that back. The sounds are there, as is the layout -- with all the controls out and ready to be tinkered with -- making it a great blast from the past. Having both a Juno 106 and Jupiter 8 all in one, along with the System 8 synth, is pretty sweet. I was skeptical of a digital take on analog sounds, but Roland's ACB technology delivers. It too, is in its own class. 5
