Entering a new realm within the short telephoto lens market, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lensfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lensis an incredibly bright portrait-length lens designed for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. The f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over focus for shallow depth of field imagery. Maintaining clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range, the optical design utilizes extra-low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, and a Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in strong lighting. Availing a range of unique possibilities for a telephoto lens, the combination of the 105mm focal length and fast maximum aperture greatly benefit portrait photographers as well as event shooters.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control. An electromagnetic diaphragm is also featured for greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Short telephoto prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used on DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.

Awesomely fast f/1.4 maximum aperture enables precise control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.

Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.

A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Fluorine coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D700 camera? Thanks

A: Definitely as D700 is a FX, full frame; it's also a backup to professional camera D3, D4, or D5 which uses this lens.

Q: 2. Does this lens work with the FTZ adapter for Z series cameras?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens is fully compatible with the Z series cameras and the Nikon FTZ2 adapter.

Q: 3. I have read the compatibility of the lens to the various cameras and the list of cameras that are not compatible to the electromagnetic mechanism is nearly all of the cameras Nikon makes, so is it compatible with a Nikon D780? That isn't even listed!

A: The Nikon D780 is compatible with the electromagnetic aperture lenses (E-Type). It is currently listed on the compatibility tab on this product.

Q: 4. What is the warranty on this used/refurbished lens?

A: This is a refurbished product that comes with a Nikon Limited 90-Day Warranty.

Q: 5. How does this lens compare to the Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105 mm F/2D Lens?

A: At the same apertures, it performs just very slightly better than the DC, but almost the same. If images are produced by skilled shooters, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in a blind test at the same apertures. Of course the new lens goes to f/1.4 where the depth of field effect is dramatic, which is the main selling point. The new lens has slightly more distortion but less flare and CA owing to better coatings. The new lens does not have a DC control ring to manipulate bokeh. The new lens does not have an aperture ring, unlike the DC-Nikkor, so it is practically worthless for classic Nikon SLRs. The new lens is light and plasticky feeling, unlike the older solid metal and glass crinkle-coated DC-Nikkor. The new lens has a AF-S in-lens motor, which will burn out after some years and will render it a manual focus lens when Nikon decides to stop making replacement motors, as they have already done for other top-of-the-line AF-S lenses...whereas the 105/2DC with screwdriver AF will still be working just fine a hundred years from now.

Q: 6. Can this lens be used with a NIKON D90 , and use all the F stops?. Electronic focus?

A: per NikonUSAThe lens incorporates an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism. The following cameras are compatible with this lens:D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1

Q: 7. Can you recommend a lens case (such as Lowepro) for this lens?

A: The Lowepro Lens Case 11 x 14cm (Black), BH #LOLC1114, is a great option for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens.

Q: 8. I have read the specs on this and it is not clear what cameras are not compatible with the electromagnetic component. Is a D780 compatible to this lens?

A: Yes, the Nikon D780 is compatible with the E-type lenses.

Q: 9. Does the lens manufacture in Japan?

A: We prefer Japan or another country, but not China!!!

Q: 10. Does it work with a F4 body?

A: It will attach and focus but you will not have the ability to adjust the aperture directly. You can shoot in shutter priority mode and the camera will adjust the aperture when the shutter speed is selected. You can also shoot in auto mode.

[f/1.4] I bought this because of the positive reviews, and the speed. I'm not a professional, but I have been taking photographs for over 50 years, starting with a Kodak rangefinder, followed by a Mamiya Sekor 35mm SLR, and etc. I enjoy producing expressive portraits and am currently using a D850, I'm attaching a photo, not to show its considerable sharpness, since it was taken in ambient light at 1/13 second, f1/1.4 and ISO 64. with a tripod on carpeted floor with no weight, not using a remote release, and a breathing cat as a subject. Still pretty sharp, though. I do feel that the photo demonstrates the smooth bokeh, and short depth of field inherent in this lens. Anyway, I like it a lot and am glad I bought it.

[82 mm (Front)] I don't know where to start without sounding too gushy. Having used Nikon and most of their lenses over the last 40 years working for a major newspaper, this current 105mm is, IMHO, the best one I've used. Shot a few test pictures on my Nikon D810 along with some paid assignments that included a couple portraits. Everything has been outstanding. Nearly everything has been shot wide open at 1.4. I bought this to use in low light situations and portraits. It's exceeding my expectations on avery shot.

[105mm] King of all lenses for bokeh lovers. Sharp even wide open and beautiful colors.
Probably the heaviest lens I've ever owned

[23° 10'] Best portrait lens I have bought. Beautiful bokeh and fast focus. Just a little bit heavy compared to other portrait lenses.

[f/1.4] This was my first professional-quality lens, and I love it. This lens gives images a lyrical character, with a soft, gently blurred background. It is extremely sharp wide open, with creamy bokeh and bright colors. So far, I've used it to photograph portraits, landscapes, plants, and even perched birds. It performs well in any conditions - drizzle, low light, scorching hot days. Although it is heavy and a bit slow to focus (even on my D500), it is much smaller, lighter, and more unobtrusive than a 70-200 f/2.8. This is one of the magic lenses you buy for their rendering abilities - it makes you feel that every shot should be deliberate.

[Full-Frame] I love it. Have used the 85mm1.4 for years and decided to pull the trigger on this bad boy. I absolutely love it; my only regret is not having this sooner.

[9, Rounded] The most fabulous lens I have ever had. Very tasty and soft bokeh, super-realistic portraits, quite sharp even at 1.6. Just be prepared to run a lot with your legs for amazing shots :))

[Full-Frame] It has the most beautiful bokeh. If you are in the portrait business, this is the best one. I like the compression, it is not too much and your customers will be happy.
