Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you mount this on a tripod then mount a camera on top? What would be the weight limit?

A: Yes you can.

Q: 2. Specs list D/A @ 115db. Is that on the 3.5mm Stereo Output &/or HeadPhone out or both?

A: This specification is for both stereo-out and headphones.

Q: 3. Can you record in 32-bit while interfacing with a computer, or is it limited to 24-bit?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II can be used to record 32-bit audio on the recorder while simultaneously using it as a USB audio interface to record audio on your computer.

Q: 4. Can phantom power be switched individually by channel? For example, two Shure SM86 mics in 1 and 2 and output from a stereo lav system (i.e. Rode Go II) in 3 and 4. 1/2 need power and 3/4 do not.

A: Yes, phantom power can be allocated to individual channels on the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder in each channel's menu parameter settings.

Q: 5. The B&H article on these second-gen MixPres says, "you can power the MixPre II series recorders via AA or Sony L-mount batteries, USB bus power, or an external power source." How? The pictures don't show any DC power input or an L-mount... just the flimsy, unacceptable USB.

A: That is what they chose to use on the 2nd generation, the MX-PSU power supply with USB connector, or the MX-LMount sled.

Q: 6. Howdy. Is the 1/8" aux input strictly mono (rather than stereo)? Thanks.

A: Hi David, The 1/8" AUX input is an unbalanced STEREO input. However, it is only MONO when used as a timecode source.

Q: 7. Can I run 4 shotgun mics through the xlr inputs and 1 lav through the line input and have 5 separate tracks in post?

A: Yes, you can input 4x phantom powered mics with the MixPre-6 II XLR inputs and 1x Stereo/2x Mono Mic/Line level signals into the 3.5mm Aux In jack. The Aux In does not provide phantom power, but does have a preamp to boost signals.

Q: 8. The Sound Devices Mixpre series has had quite a few quality control issues. I purchased the Mixpre 6 when it first came out and it never worked. Why should I be confident in any Sound Devices product?

A: Hi Scott, I am sorry to hear your MixPre-6 II "never worked." Can you please clarify what this means? Did you contact our support team to determine what/if anything is wrong with your unit?

Q: 9. The MixPre6 II can generate a Sound Report? And what's the utility of recording in 2 tracks using the TRS/AUX input? Thank you

A: thank you for your question. the MIX PRE 6 cannot generate a sound report. The TRS input can be used for a tentacle sync to record time code or to record any external line level signal

Q: 10. For a standard two camera angle and external sound shoot, how many Tentacle sync/other brand TC boxes are necessary? Two or three?

A: You would need one (1) Tentacle Sync E for each device that you plan to use for recording in your setup. In the case of two (2) cameras with one (1) Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder, you would need three (3) Tentacle Sync E units.

[0.1 lb] I was tired of carrying, swapping, and charging AAs for my MixPre-6 and forked out the money for this. As mentioned, it is a very secure connection that has me using the USB-C cable to get the files. I had been using it only when stationary, but recently bought a Sachtler small audio bag to carry my vmount battery, whose power will last longer than my shoulders.  As trustworthy as their cables.

[USB Type-A] I updated my audio bag to include an SD MixPre-6 but wasn't thrilled with the powering options. But when I found this, I pressed order! And I'm glad I did. It works nicely withRemote AudioBDSv4U.

[24" / 60 cm] Snaps in really securely and is solidly all metal, though you have to be careful when inserting. I also have the 8 battery sled and the Sony sled but even those don't match the run time of this with a v-mount battery. You can also use this with an NP1 cup. The Sony sled holds batteries in awkward positions. The only downside of this unit is that you have to use this and the battery with a decent size bag.

[24" / 60 cm] I got this cable to connect my MixPre 3 to my computer to use it as an audio interface. A standard USB-C to A cable will work but the mixer will run in low power mode, limiting functionality. This cable allows full power, full functionality when connected to a computer, though it does require two free USB A ports.

The cable seems sturdy and high quality, which is good because it's not inexpensive.

Basically, it does what I needed it to do and seems like decent quality, I'm happy with it.

[24" / 60 cm] Sled is very well constructed and provides a nice alternative to powering your MixPre-6/3 while freeing up the USB-C port for streaming.

[24" / 60 cm] We use the MixPre 6 II to both record ISO tracks on a podcast and send a mix into the computer for livestream. But we're using a 2015 MacBook Pro, so without this cable we couldn't get the device to last long enough. This cable solves it all and makes the workflow a breeze!

[USB Type-A] It's a bit annoying that one needs this cable in the first place to power the MixPre while using it as a USB interface. I considered a Hirose power sled adapter but that was going to be a lot of trouble and expense. Against Sound Devices' recommendation I tried a couple workarounds using other types of USB-C adapters designed for other devices and predictably they didn't work. So you do need this cable, and at least it's nice and sturdy with heavy gauge wire and a handy 6' length. As per a YouTube video I use it with a powered USB hub (TenDak) connected to an iPhone with the lightning-USB camera adapter. It's a little kludgey with all the wires and adapters but it does work reliably, allowing me to use very high quality mics and the MixPre's excellent preamps and ADC for recording video on the iPhone with a third party app (ProMovie). This saves a ton of trouble syncing and mixing the tracks post-capture. So overall I can't complain, it does the job I needed!

[USB Type-A] Needed to connect RAVPower USB battery to MixPre 6. Works great.

[USB Type-A] This saved the day on a remote job that I had. The mx-powersled fits snug on the mixpre 3 and makes it possible to unplug and go. I powering it through the usb c but this makes it far more accessible and easier to manage.

[0.1 lb] The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II is a great, compact recorder, but it eats AA batteries for lunch.

Some users power their MixPre-6 II (and MixPre-3 II) with USB power banks, but the USB connection is fragile and risks getting pulled out of place while in use. Enter the Hirose adapter.

If you’re using one of the smaller MixPre units, there’s nothing like an NP-1 or HiQ battery for getting through an entire production day, and the Hirose adapter allows for use with the proper battery cup.

The MX Powersled features solid, metal construction that snaps easily in place on the recorder. This is a great power solution for the MixPre-3/6 II recorders.
