Complementing the long reach is an optimized optical design that features three low dispersion (LD) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range. eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare when working in strong, backlit lighting conditions.

Beyond its optical attributes, the G2 version of this lens also incorporates a FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism to permit locking the zoom position at any focal length position to prevent accidental zoom extension. Conventional zoom lock is also featured to prevent barrel extension during transport. Suiting handheld shooting situations, Vibration Compensation (VC) is a 4.5-stop-effective image stabilization mechanism that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working with slower shutter speeds. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers notably quick and accurate focusing performance to suit working with fast-moving subjects, and full-time manual focus is also supported for fine-tuned control. Benefitting its use outdoors, the lens also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to guard against dirt, dust, moisture, and smudging from affecting image quality. The ergonomic and durable metal construction of the lens also incorporates textured focus and zoom rings, and a removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot is supplied to better enable shooting from tripods and monopods.

Spanning a versatile, long-reaching range, this tele to super-tele zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.

Three low dispersion elements are incorporated to nearly eliminate both axial and transverse chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.

Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.

A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control.

A FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables you to lock the zoom at any position in order to prevent unwanted zoom extension during use. A conventional zoom lock switch is also featured, which locks the zoom in place at the 150mm position to prevent zoom extension during transportation.

A sealed, moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.

A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.

Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Q: 8. How does this lens perform at 600mm? From what I have read, the sigma 150-600 C still outperforms the G2 at 600mm? I'm still learning. Any input is appreciated.

A: I have the G2 version. In my honest opinion, your concern shouldn't be over a small difference in image quality in a test stand scenario. The big challenge with any lens this long is stopping all camera motion during image capture. Hand holding at 600mm, even at 1/1500th, in bright sunlight, is tough, unless you've been doing it for years. If you have anything less than a REALLY stable tripod you'll see shake at 600mm. All this is even worse if you're on a crop sensor and 600mm looks like 900mm or so. Rather than worrying about a few points difference in DXO mark scores on image quality, concern yourself with taking a good stable shot. Then I think you'll find that both the Tamron's and both the Sigmas will do a fine job for you. Getting 100% of the lens' IQ at 600mm in the field is really hard regardless of who makes it. The other thing to consider is what you're going to do with the shots. If you are going to print bigger than 11x17 then my comment about getting the shot stable is even more important. Blur will show up far quicker than small IQ differences. If, you're going to do all electronic posting, nothing can display all the lens can capture (unless 8K gets big soon) and IQ isn't as important. I've had great results at 600mm on wildlife and long land shots. Autofocus has been very reliable. For the Tamrons, I'd buy the G2 for the new features others commented on, but, I'm not sure I'd upgrade to the G2 from the previous version. I don't think the new features are that valuable.

Q: 9. Does this lens work ok on a Z7 with a FTZ?

A: Yes, the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon F used with the Nikon FTZ Lens Adapter would be compatible for use on the Nikon Z7 Mirrorless Digital Camera.

Q: 10. I recently purchased this lens. I've been shooting hand held & on a tri-pod. Lots of practice but I'm loving it so far.. one issue so far. I find that turning the zoom in and out is very very stiff....should it be stiff or move freely?

A: It is common for the zoom ring to be more stiff with first using it. With regular use, the ring will be easier to turn.

[f/5 to 6.3] So far so good, loving the focal length. Great pictures.
Awesome buy.
My Tamron 18-400 was a great buy, but this lens adds a far better tool to the case.
Glad I invested. Expanding your lens, can't go wrong with this one.

[9, Rounded] I finally was able to pick this up. I am pretty new to long focal lenses like this but I took a photo of an eagle at 600mm hand held on my 6d and it's amazing. I would definitely recommend this.

[f/5 to 6.3] Like most people I read lots of reviews before choosing this lens. There are lots of test charts showing the lens is not very sharp at 600mm so when I looked at my first set of photos I was thrilled. Images are very sharp with good color and contrast. My wife and I are using this lens on Nikon D7500 and D5500 cameras. On both, the lens focuses very quickly in most situations. The Tamron Vibration Compensation works really well and has three options for different situations. Larger, heavier pro lenses will likely out-perform this lens most of the time but for me they are just too large and heavy, not to mention pricey, and would be left at home often. I am really pleased with this lens and recommend it strongly.

[f/5 to 6.3] This is my first "big lens" and I love it. The photographs are sharp and I liked the flexibility of using the tap in console. At 600mm the images are sharp and clear. I was holding out for the Canon 100-400 II when I had a friend loan me his Tamron 150-600. The images were excellent and the added 200mm made me pull the trigger. Thanks B and H and Tamron!

[Canon EF] I shoot Sony and originally wanted to buy the Sigma 150-600mm lens but didn't want a converter. I needed the lens for wildlife and a converter wasn't going to cut it. I bought the original version of this lens and sent it back because the chromatic aberration was very noticeable. I held my breath when I tested this lens when I got it and was really pleased with how sharp it was with no chromatic aberration!

The real test was a recent visit to a wildlife sanctuary where the birds are skittish and always at a distance. I hand held the lens some of the time (and it's HEAVY) but mostly used a tripod. I was shocked to find that even handheld, I got some sharp images. Using a tripod was better, of course. VERY happy I bought this lens as it'll give me more range and great results when shooting wildlife.

[f/32 to 40] I've used this lens extensively on my Nikon D850. I've used it for sports (track & field) and wildlife. Additionally I've captured great longer distance landscape images (lighthouses) and it's been a pleasure to use. Sharp, fast focusing and fast for such a value priced long reach lens.

[Canon EF] I've owned the first version of this lens for 3 years, and it has served me well. The G2 is a worthwhile upgrade from the first. At 600mm, tripod and remote shutter, my photos were always less than ideal with the G1. 500mm I got great shots, but I paid for a 600mm lens. I use it primarily for BIFs and static birds. I have hundreds of decent shots of Blue Herons and Great Egrets, but not tack sharp. This version, with decent light, IMO, at about f/8 takes pretty sharp shots of the birds I enjoy photographing at 600mm. The VC on this lens is excellent compared to the 1st, 3 levels depending on the subject, with only 2 on the G1. I notice that it focuses quicker, cleaner than the original. I think Tamron has done a great job of upgrading this glass, as I seemed to also have had AF issues with the 1st. This version goes right where I want, quicker by far than the G1, and no hunting, or flat out refusing to focus like my original 150-600. I'm very happy with my purchase, and I've extensively used the net to make up my mind. I haven't seen a bad review of this lens yet. I have read a few that preferred the Sigma version, but no real bad reviews. B&H always takes care of my orders in a timely manner, and I'm sure I'll be back for other purchases in the future.

[Canon EF] Although I've only used the lense for a few days so far, i was very pleased with the autofocus and vibration compensation performance while shooting a Falcon 9 rocket launch. Even without a tripod, i was able to get clear, un-motion-blurred shots of the booster on the slow ascent, and the very quick descent, especially against a blue sky. I'm looking forward to use this for more wildlife in the future.

[Autofocus] This review is coming from the perspective of a Nikon D500 (Crop). So I do not fall in the category of softness at the corners, nor vignetting. I will be comparing this to a NIKKOR 70-200 Gen 3 in my opinions one of their best lenses.

With that said, I've only had this lens for a few days and have already taken some great shots with it. The contrast is great, the focus speed is average.
