Q: 7. I just purchased this lens and it is a real gem. I do have a question about zooming, however. All other zoom lenses I have ever used were fully retracted at the short focal length setting and fully extended at the long setting. With this lens, it is slightly extended at the 18mm setting and retracts as the zoom ring is rotated toward the 10mm setting. However it is fully retracted at just under 14mm and then extends again as I continue to zoom toward 10mm. Of course it is impossible to know what is going on internally, but is this normal? Looking through the viewfinder it appears to zoom smoothly from wide to very wide with no unusual jumps or reversals. Also learned that you cannot use a lens hood with this lens if you are using the pop-up flash unit. There is a nice dark bulging shadow at the bottom of the frame from the top hood petal. Removing the lens hood removes the dark shadow bulge on images.

A: My lens operates the same way, as does a friend's copy, so it is normal. Generally you don't want to use the pop-up flash anyway so, for me anyway, that is not an issue.
