The front of the exposed lens glass is only about 39mm in diameter.Without the hood or the rear cap, the length of the unit is 80mm.So, the dimensions you were quoted are somewhat inconsistently applied. Your diameter dimension of 100mm is indeed the diameter of the hood. However, the length dimension is a measurement of the bare lens unit without hood or rear cap.

A: Using a polarizer with an ultra-wide lens like the Basis 18 is problematic. The sky is only polarized in a narrow band 90 degrees from the sun, so you will see a dark, diagonal streak in the blue sky. Banding is less noticeable if you use the polarizer to control reflections.

A: For precise architectural photography you must use a tilt shift. Despite its qualities, any wide angle lens will give you some degree of distortion in the lines. However, these distortions could be fixed in PS...still purists would say that they still see distortion. Can't you get a Canon adapter for the tilt-shift?
