Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What suspends the mic inside? I'm wondering how this works with a boom pole -- I'm familiar with a Rycote suspension where the pole connects to the blimp handle.

A: The shotgun is supported by an open-cell foam matrix surrounded by a layer of 25mm-thick simulated rabbit fur.

Q: 2. Is this compatible with Rycote Connbox 4 for Single Shank Stereo Microphones with 5-Pin XLR? (I have the AT BP4025 stereo mic)

A: No, the Rycote Nano Shield Windshield Kit is not compatible with Rycote connboxes.

Q: 3. If I'm going to be mounting the AT875R on the camera, not holding it, is there any advantage to using foam cover as apposed to just one of these, or would this do for everything?

A: This is a few years after the original question, but the dynamics are still the same for anyone else wondering if these higher-end dead cats are worth the extra few bucks. YES, there is an advantage over every other option out there, including the lesser-priced ones that are really only the fuzzy part and retrofit over your existing foam windshield. Look at the picture of the cutout on the Auray professional windscreen. See the webby network of nondescript "whatever that is" between the outside of the dead cat (IE the fuzzy exterior) and the microphone itself? THAT is what keeps the wind out. It is made of a pliable plastic, and because of its jumbled weave, it cuts the path of the wind from as many directions as you see "jumbles." In my experience, the fluffy exterior helps more with cutting plosives and with sibilance. Let's put it this way, when I want clean audio, these professional windscreens are what go on my microphones. When I NEED a video that requires an audio sync with wind (a close of leaves blowing, etc), I will record two tracts: one mic with the professional windscreen for clean audio, and the second mic with the mic-kit "foam" one, so I will have "just enough" wind noise to match the scene!

Q: 4. Does it work with ntg4 + ?

A: Yes. See below dimensions ( the depth spec does work, as 7.1 " is more than enough to cover the mic element / side vents. Auray WSS-2018 Specs Compatible Mic Diameter 0.75 to 0.9" / 19 to 23 mm Inner Depth 7.1" / 18 cm Rode NTG 4+: Physical Color Black Mounting 3/8"-16 Female, 5/8"-27 Female, Mic Clip (with Included Hardware) Construction Material Metal Dimensions ø: 0.87 x L: 10.94" / ø: 22 x L: 278 mm Weight 6.21 oz / 176 g (Microphone)

Q: 5. Is this suitable for a 416 t

A: It works quite well!

Q: 6. Which size Rycote Duck Rain Cover would suit this?

A: Unfortunately there is not a Rucote Duck Rain Cover compatible with the Nano Shield Windshield Kit NS6-DD.

Q: 7. It's compatible with ECM-XM1?

A: The Auray WSS-2012 Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones - 4.7" will fit on the Sony ECM-XM1 Shotgun Microphone, but since the WSS-2012 is 4.7" deep and the mic is only 6.5" long, the windshield may be a bit too long for the mic. As a better option, you can use the Rycote Standard Hole Classic Softie Wind-Screen - 3.9" Long, 0.7 to 0.8" Diameter Hole, Gray (B&H # RYS10M) or the RODE WS11 Windshield for VideoMic NTG Mic (B&H # ROWS11). The VideoMic NTG is about the same size as the ECM-XM1 so the windshield should provide a good fit.

Q: 8. its compatible whit dpa4017b?

A: Yes, the Auray WSS-2014 is compatible for use with the DPA 4017B shotgun microphone.

Q: 9. will the 250p work with xlr to mini on GH5s if you select phantom mode on camera...and does it reduce battery life noticeably?

A: There is no way to send phantom power from a camera's mini-jack mic input, since it is an unbalanced connection. So the SGM-250P will not work if converted to mini-plug on any camera. For this you will need a microphone that is self-powered. Our SGM-250 model shotgun microphone can run off a AA battery and could be adapted to a mini input if desired. However, for better results, we'd recommend the SMX-15 microphone for unbalanced, mini-jack connections. The SMX-15 also has a built in gain booster circuit to help over come the noise that is usually inherent in the poorer quality mic preamps that are built into most mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

Q: 10. Does it fit the Senheisser MKH 416?

A: Indeed! It does fit the Sennheisser MKH 416

[0.04 lb] Tried it with Nikon z 7II a windy seaside place in south of Sweden and it was very effective.

[0.04 lb] Anyone that desires quality stereo audio in their videos, this mic is a godsend. My video shoots are nature videos, and the stereo quality I get from this mic adds a lot more immersion to my videos. With the switch of a button, I can go into shotgun mic mode, which picks up sound great.

Pleased with both the stereo and mono quality of this mic.

[0.04 lb] I needed for a solid, not terribly expensive Shotgun Mic and several reviews led me to the Azden SMX-15. I am a full time professional photographer who is required to shoot quality video clips from time to time.

While I wish the mic didn't feel a little on the flimsy side (I worry about long term durability), the weight and overall performance is great. I've used it for several jobs thus far with no complaints.

[0.04 lb] I've had this mic for almost 4 years now and I've always been pleasantly surprised by the audio. It isn't the quality you would get from a dedicated shotgun mic, but for an on-camera mic I have been super impressed. In situations with lots of background noise where I thought the audio would be unusable, it almost always comes through with a great sound and clear vocals.

[0.04 lb] Like many others, I've been using Rode for on camera shotgun mike. It finally fell apart on me and I came upon this Azden. Most importantly, I think it has terrific audio capabilities, certainly on par or better than the Rode. But it surpasses the Rode in build quality. No more rubber band stabilizers that snap and/or wear out. This is a solid stabilizer system. Also - it turns on/off when the camera does - a feature not available on the Rode I had, only the more expensive model. And it takes AA batteries, not 9 volt, another improvement. It also has a low band filter and good gain settings. All in all, it has everything the "advanced" Rode mike has - for less money than the cheaper Rode, that has none of those features. It comes with a windshield, it doesn't seem to be appreciatively heavier or larger than the old Rode, either - unlike the upgraded Rode which is kind of huge for mirrorless cameras. So, yes, I strongly recommend this camera.

[0.04 lb] This was my first microphone away from rode and it was a good move. The build quality is good, it functions properly and price isn't too bad. Only thing is the microphone does hit your eye if you're using EVF but no other complaints

[0.04 lb] The bottom has an elastic strap which slides between the foam and the mount so the dead kitten covers the SMX-30 fully. Works well in windy conditions.

[0.04 lb] I am not an audio specialist, the tests I have done with regular wind have attenuated the noise quite a bit, although if the wind is strong it can be heard.
It gives a very good presence and should be placed over the foam of the microphone.
No soy un especialista en audio las pruebas que le he hecho con viento regular ha atenuado bastante el ruido aunque si el viento es fuerte si se escucha.
Da muy buena precencia y se debe poer encima del foam del microfono

[0.04 lb] I am very pleased with the Azden SMX-15. I chose it over the SMX-30 since it is slightly smaller and I did not expect to need the stereo feature the -30 has. Love the auto feature that detects when the camera is on.

[0.04 lb] Could not be easier to use... especially set on auto ... one less thing to remember turning  it on and off... Used it at a party setting last night and I was bouncing back between normal and -10bd going from indoors and outdoors... I think I will add some bass in post to give it a more pleasing sound at least for my ear...
