Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have this tripod and love it for use both with a DSLR and for binoculars. I noticed the center column is two pieces. Is there a center column extension tube that can be mounted to increase the column height, especially for binocular use?

A: Unfortunately there is no extension available for the center column of this tripod. My sincere apologies.

Q: 2. Where is this made? Who makes it? How is the quality? i.e. compare and contrast to the original. It's rather expensive for something that may come from China. Unless the quality is superb.

A: This tripod is really well made. I checked on the box and yes, it is made in China. But not to worry, it doesnt have the feel of a cheap tripod. I always wanted to have a Tiltall. Now that I have one, I am very happy with it. I have four other great tripods and this one is the nicest, it is a real classic. I do not know how it compares to the original one, but it is a great tripod and worth the price tag. It is so nice that it is almost a collector item.

Q: 3. Can a sony ax3000 be mounted on a Sunpak 5858D Aluminium Tripod?

A: As long as it isn't too heavy. My husband is using this tripod for a Canon 30D and will hold the weight quite fine which is about 7 lbs. Hope this works for you!

Q: 4. To what height does this extend to?

A: Legs measured 44 7/8 long: Base 4 7/8 = 49.575 Extenders were very sturdy for my useI don't have an extender.

Q: 5. Can I buy just the tripod head or individual parts of the head? Thanks, Eliza

A: My answer is no, you cant just buy the head.

Q: 6. New to quick release plates. Will quick release plate fit cameras (Nikon, Panasonic) accepting tripods?

A: The quick release plates included with the Sunpak 6601UT Tripod are standard quick release plates using the standard 1/4 -20 threaded tripod connector to connect to digital cameras. While most all cameras and camcorders use a 1/4 -20 tripod connector, as no camera was listed above, I would recommend checking the Specifications tab for your camera to ensure it has a standard tripod connector for your needs. Most all Nikon, Canon, and Panasonic cameras use a standard 1/4 -20 tripod connector on the bottom of the camera.

Q: 7. Can you connect a mini Jib crane to this tripod?

A: This tripod has a 44 lb load capacity, which is a good amount to hold a jib. For additional help with this question feel free to email us at provideo@bhphoto.com. That way we can go over more details like the camera you have, how tall of a jib you desire and more. From there we can find the right products to fit your needs.

Q: 8. what country is this item manufactured in?

A: It is made in China.

Q: 9. Can I modify this to use a gimbal head?

A: The head of this tripod is not removable. You could attach a head via the 1/4 -20 top screw (use these bushings if the gimbal has a 3/8-16. Manfrotto 148KN Reducing Bushing Set - 3/8 -16 to 1/4 -20 (Set of 5) B&H # MA148KN. However, I would not truly recommend this and only do so if no other alternative was available.

Q: 10. Will the Oben QRA-R2 quick release assembly work with this tripod and if not is there one that will?

A: Yes, the Oben QRA-R2 will work with the Titlall tripod.

[9 lb] This is probably the most stable, solid tripod I've ever used. It handles everything I've thrown at it including a super-telephoto (Z9 w/ 800mm PF). For the big stuff, I did make one change by replacing the 3-way head with a headless center tube and a gimbal head. I still use the 3-way for lighter loads. It was worth it to me to have the solid, stable base this tripod provides and the flexibility of the alternative center tube. The retractable spikes in the feet are a great bonus and greatly enhance the stability in certain circumstance.

RECOMMENDED.

[3] I bought my first Tiltall in 1972 and still have it. My second was bought about 15 years ago. It holds a light 4x5 very well. The built-in 3-way head is excellent. I've used both of these professionally and on a regular basis.

[Aluminum] I've used my Tiltall tripod for many years and it has never failed to work well. It's still in great shape with only one small ding. It has great nostalgia value as I used this tripod for my master's thesis in photography all those years ago. Highly recommended!

[9 lb] I have worked with this Tiltall Tripod for over 30 years.
I just bought the same model brand new - it is top shelf.
This is a great sturdy and easy to work with tripod.

[Twist Lock] I love the classic design of this very sturdy tripod. The functionality is perfect. Very good materials and workmanship. The product picture is outdated. The actual product has redesigned simpler knobs and the leg that transforms into monopod has a black grip. Special care should be put in the gold finish since it can get easily scratched. I believe is a great option for a tripod that will last many years.

[9 lb] First off, contrary to some of the other reviews and answers, nearly everything on this tripod is metal, except for the obvious places like end caps and bearings that are either rubber or plastic, as they should be.
I bought the Tiltall because I was fed up with the poor build quality on the various tripods that I own, some of them Sliks. Even though they are highly recommended, I still had plastic parts snap off and become worn out with little use. And don't get me started on the quick connects that are more trouble than their worth, not to mention they make the tripod unusable if you lose them.
Sure the Tiltall is heavier, but I'd rather deal with that than a broken piece that forces work arounds. Every piece is precision made and moves smoothly, locking down with minimal force.
One piece that persistently breaks on competitor's models is the crank handle for the vertical adjustment. There is no crank on the Tiltall, the Z axis adjustment is accomplished by pulling or pushing instead, which works just fine for me since the lock downs can be tightened or loosened just enough to temporarily hold while you find the right position when you can then tighten it more securely.
A feature this tripod has that my Sliks don't are spikes that can be extruded from the bottom of the legs by twisting a ring there. This is great if you're on slippery, uneven ground; the spikes dig in perfectly.
The carrying case that comes with it protects it snugly and has a shoulder strap that makes it easier to transport off site. It even has pockets for the odd bit of gear.

Overall, this is a tripod that is built to last a lifetime and then some. I just wish I could have bought it earlier instead of wasting my money on tripods that are cheaper, and that are touted in other reviews.

[Aluminum] i too had one of these in the 1970's. it had plastic handle locking grips. it went through a fire, melted the scratch protection pad on the head, plastic grips, rubber feet and center post shock ring. I cleaned the tripod and installed wooden handles on all of the locking mechanisms; took a picture of it and sent it to the company with its story.

to my surprise they sent me a new scratch protection pad for the head, set of (plastic) handles, rubber feet and center post shock ring along with a very nice letter of condolence. it's hard to find a company that dedicated to its customer base these days.

i gave the tripod away to a friend in 1994 who was beginning a photo career. i jokingly requested the tripod back one day and received the reply (with a wink and a smile), "you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands."

i highly recommend this tripod as quality "pro" tool.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] The Tiltall TE is heavy and big. It doesn't do a myriad of different things and it takes time to set it up. It is also beautifully well made, smooth to operate and incredibly stable. I like knowing my heavy, expensive, camera gear will work best with this beauty.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] This is the best tripod I've owned - very solid and handles a big camera with a big lens with ease. No, it's not light and I wouldn't make this my first choice for backpacking; but, if you want a very firm base to shoot from, this is a great choice. I like this tripod so much that I bought one as a gift for my daughter (only give things of a high enough quality that you'd like to receive them).

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] I bought my first Leitz Tiltall tripod back in the mid-1970's. It was a workhorse that I used for medium and lighter large format cameras. I loved it...so much so that it finally gave up the ghost about a year ago. I purchased this new Tiltall (no longer bears the Leitz name on it) and am happy with it. It looks and feels the same, with the exception that the control knobs are a bit different (e.g., about all the same in look and feel)...but that's OK as I pirated 2 different knobs off of my old tripod. When looking through the viewfinder most of my adjustment are by touch, rather than looking at the knobs making the adjustment...thus the reason for swapping back to 2 of the original (different) knobs. All in all, this is a very good 'old school' tripod for the money. The carrying case that accompanies it is a bonus.
