Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this ball head ok w/o friction control?

A: Yes, it actually works quite well without friction.

Q: 2. Is this needed or advised for portraits?

A: You can certainly use this for portraits but it also depends on the camera and lens you are using. A lightweight camera system would be fine but a head with a heavier load capacity would be more appropriate for a heavier camera system.

Q: 3. Will this ball head work with Arca-Swiss universal quick release plates?

A: The Matthews BH-30 Ball Head has not been tested with all Arca style plates. But the head uses standard Arca Swiss style plates, and should work with most.

Q: 4. does it come with the old Really Right Stuff logo or the newer modern looking one?

A: I don't know which is new vs. old. Its different from the picture shown.

Q: 5. besides price, why would you want a compact lever-release vs a full size lever?

A: Good question, they really don't make it very clear. According to the RRS website, the compact edition comes with the B2-40 LR lever release style quick release clamp while the full-size edition comes with the B2-AS II 60mm lever style quick release clamp . If you check the RRS website for those parts individually, you can see the differences. The full-size clamp has jaws that are about 0.5 longer than the compact clamp. The weights are also slightly different. There's a thread on DPReview (id 2510302) that suggests the difference doesn't matter if you're just going to use an L-plate. In that case, you can probably go for the compact version.I'm not fully confident though, so take this with a grain of salt.

Q: 6. Whats the difference between BH-30 LR and BH-30 PRO II? Which is newer? thanks

A: The Pro-II has a screw clamp while the other has a lever release. Lever's are faster but the screw clamp is more adjustable especially for non-RRS brand plates.

Q: 7. i want to use this with eos r6 + 24-70/2.8, 50/2.0, 70-200/2.8, do i need to go to heavier BH-40? Weight is my main concern.

A: The BH40 is quite a bit easier to use than the BH30 due to its tension knob, making it so when you use your 70-200 you can make it feel tighter rather than too loose or floppy. The weight difference between the heads is roughly 6 oz (11.1 versus 17.1), which isn't significant, but the size difference is quite noticeable.

Q: 8. Does this ball head allow to put the camera in a vertical position and tilt the camera up and down?

A: Yes, you can maneuver the head in any position.

Q: 9. What is the weight of this ball head?

A: The RRS BH-30 with compact lever-release clamp weighs 11.2oz / 318 g.

Q: 10. The RRS website shows a Full Size Screw Knob option for the BH-30. That option is not shown on the B&H website. Is it an option from B&H?

A: I'm sorry, that is a version that B&H doesn't carry at the moment.

[Yes] I use this for mounting my Panasonic UE150s onto mic stands, and it works really well. They have excellent form factor, and they can speak several languages. I recommend them.

[Ball Head] Haven't use it but a couple of time but locks well with a Sigma 300mm f2.8 lens mounted on a Pentax K-1.

[Yes] I tested this product thoroughly and it is solid. It is easy to use, locks well, doesn't creep once locked with heavy weighty equipment in the unstable portrait orientation. This was rated very highly by a German Tester, he tested several parameters and is well worth checking this review for many ballheads. This ballhead is small, has multiple levels, well marked on the pan base for panoramas.

[Yes] Just used this for 7-days straight. Water, sand, dirt, handles it with no problem. Solid as a rock. Ball head is excellent.

[Yes] So much versatility. It's robust and easy to use for the most part. It's not as portable as some other tripods but that's not a big deal for me

[Yes] RRS manufactures high end equipment, I feel very comfortable mounting my camera and lenses to this ball head. I use both, the BH-55 and the BH-30 I also love the L bracket on my A7Rlll, I never take it off.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] I like this ball head because for it's size, it's the strongest and locks up the tightest of any other ball head I've owned (including: RRS, Kirk, SLIK, FLM, and Gitzo).

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] I purchased the BH-30 because I wanted a small, light and smooth ball-head to use on a monopod. I paired it with a Wimberley C-12 clamp and am using it on a Gitzo GM4532 (fitted with the smaller assembly disc from the 2542). When locked up this combo is rock solid.

I mostly use it with a relatively small telephoto lens in the EF 400 f/5.6, but Ive also put a Sigma 150-600 C on it without any loss in mobility. I dare say it could handle larger lenses without any trouble.

If you are after a small, lightweight ball-head for a monopod then youd be hard pressed to find one more suitable than this.

[Ball Head] What makes this tripod amazingly versatile is the ability to position the center pole horizontally and then angle it up and down as desired. The lever release makes this operation smooth and effective. I have another high quality tripod that can position the center pole horizontally but it can't change the angle up and down. I have to do that by adjusting the legs. A bit clumsy at times. This tripod does it using the release lever. Much easier to do.
