[4 hours] This device sits neatly on the desktop near the computer. We chose a wired device on purpose to avoid clutter in the wireless space (university setting). The scanner reads both sides of a sheet very quickly, and much more efficiently than other scanners tested. It delivers the scan to a location easily chosen with a minimum of fuss and bother. Great machine.

[4 hours] I bought the Ricoh fi-8170 to replace an 18 year old Fujitsu fi-5750C. The fi-7700 was $6700, this is a definite alternative if a flatbed isn't needed. Scans really fast, the only downside is you need to constantly pull the sheets off as they've been scanned or they start bunching up and scatter.

[4 hours] This document scanner, out of the box, is ready for individual owners/users and centrally managed corporate workgroups with many users (frequent and occasional) and many scanners. It has built-in ethernet as well as USB. The included software is well thought out; the many details are organized nicely, and done so that it's straightforward for all the different target users can effectively organize their scanning activity - by type, by destination, etc. It's business-oriented, assumes you know how to use your computer, as opposed to consumer-oriented (spoon-feeding you social media and assuming *it* knows how you use your computer). The scans are fine and it works fast; the multi-page feeder will easily do a multi-page two-sided (duplex) document, and the software helps keep it all together etc. All in all, complete, comprehensive, quite good.

If there's a downside, it's that there's a lot of different software modules it installs, and I found the updates a bit confusing - didn't find them automatically, and after I went and found & downloaded the update files, when I ran them it said they were already installed, so it's not immediately clear whether what came on the DVD is in fact the most current or whether what's installed was or even needed to be updated. It's OK in the sense that the software is complete and not buggy, so I can just get on with scanning.

[On-site] The rollers on my old fi-3160 finally after 15 years became gummy bears. Figured it was time to get a new scanner. The 8170 looked very similar to the old 3160 but boasted a lightning fast PPM rate. Set up was pretty straight forward once I figured out that for some reason I could not make Scandall Pro work with the 8170, although it worked well with the old scanner. For lack of any other option, I tried out PaperStream Click Scan that came with the new scanner. Turns out it is much easier to get the options you want than Scandall and a much easier interface by a wide margin. Great piece of office equipment and software.

[Parts and labor] I resisted buying a new ScanSnap since my old one is still going strong and usable on Mac OS High Sierra but I have upgraded to a M1Max running Monterey and decided I missed being able to just scan when I wanted to. This is a vast improvement over the previous Scansnap both physically and with much more intuitive software, organizing paper work is a breeze with this and lots of options. I went with the plain wired version, no bells & whistles and it has all I need to get the job done really quickly.

[Fujitsu fi-7480] I have been fighting with the scanners of all-in-one printers for years. I always thought standalone scanners were too expensive, but I finally got so tired of the jammed document feeders and crappy software that I decided to splurge and get a dedicated scanner. Why did I wait so long?! This one is lightning fast and incredibly easy to use. When a sheet does get jammed, it shows you the last page it scanned to decide quickly what you need to do. The only improvements I would make would be to have an option for using Windows Explorer to save the file, instead of having to always use the scanner filing system, and to have reversing the page order be a one-click function - however, these are minor compared to the overall ease of use, in my opinion. The scanner is quite heavy and feels really well made. It took me a while to realize it was scanning both sides of the page at the same time - really fast! I highly recommend this scanner.
