Offering a normal field of view with an impressively compact design, the ZEISS Loxia 50mm f/2 Lens for Sony E Mountis a flexible prime for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, well-suited for a range of subjects from portraits to landscapes. Utilizing a classic symmetrical Planar optical design, this lens is capable of achieving well-corrected, sharp imagery with controlled aberrations and distortions. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and flaring for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Loxia-series lenses are distinguished by their manual focus operation along with a manual aperture ring that can be de-clicked for silent operation; making them especially suitable for filmmaking applications. Loxia lenses are also characterized by their compact form factor and all-metal lens barrel, which incorporates engraved focusing and depth of field scales, for fine-tuned control. Additionally, the lens body sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length

Bright f/2 aperture helps to achieve a more compact, portable form factor while also remaining versatile for use in a variety of lighting conditions.

Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with a 180° focus ring rotational angle and hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

Manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.

Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.

The lens mount is fitted with an electronic interface that conveys all lens Exif data to the camera and can also be configured to automatically activate the camera's focusing magnification function when turning the focus ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how many Diaphragm Blades does this lens has?

A: This lens has 10 aperture blades.

Q: 2. Do I have to use stop down metering?

A: Yes, the lens stops down automatically. I find this most helpful, seeing what I will be capturing before I press the shutter release. I would also add that this has become my favorite lens. Period.

Q: 3. Why would I choose this over the Sony Zeiss 50mm 1.8 autofocus lens?

A: If you're using an A7 (or s or r or ii) this lens covers the full frame of the sensor. The lens is really designed for those cameras. I'm not positive but I'm fairly certain the Sony FE 55 1.8 is the only native mount lens in that focal length that does cover that sensor and has autofocus.Comparing it to that lens, you would also get it if you wanted a declicked aperture for video, similar to a cine lens. The autofocus is also not much of worry if you're shooting video primarly (as there is no particularly useful video autofocus with large sensor cameras yet.) Aesthetically, which might have been your question all along, the zeiss lens does have a different look than the Sony lens. Out of focus details are very smooth and the bokeh is quite nice. Like other Zeiss glass, it renders contrast in a particular way, not neccesarily better or worse, but the image has a quality that lens nerds call '3d.' Sometimes objects sort of pop from the frame and have interesting separation from the foreground. That said, if you're not looking to use on an a7 or full frame variant and you're not looking for a native-mount (as in, not adapted) lens primarily for video, I can't say the zeiss loxia presents a particularly good value.

Q: 4. have the Loxia 21. Its Killer. Can I use the 50 as a macro lens?

A: The ZEISS Loxia 2/50 is not a macro style lens, since the minimum focus distance is set at 17.7" and the image magnification ratio of 1:6.9. However, the lens can be used with extension tubes to provide close focus capability.

Q: 5. Where is this manufactured and would the location of manufacturer make a difference when it comes to quality control issues such as decentering and misaligned lens elements?

A: All ZEISS camera lenses, regardless of where they are manufactured, are designed to meet exacting QC standards. You can purchase and use these lenses with confidence in knowing they are designed to offer the highest performance possible and built for many years of use.

Q: 6. How good is this camera with a7s? and is it 4k compatible ?

A: How good is the LENS with an A7S ...? In my opinion, it is good for all applications, including video. The Loxia 35/2 and 50/2 are completely compatible with all Sony A7 cameras, including the A7S. The lens is electronically connected to the body, and transmits settings and distance to the camera. The lens is very sharp throughout the image, and has exceptionally low distortion. The diaphram is manually controlled, and can be de-clicked for smooth transitions with video. Focusing is also manual, very smooth and precise with a long throw (135 deg). Manual lenses are preferred for video, and the Loxia is one of the best. I use this lens with an A7ii and A7Rii for both stills and video.

Q: 7. Shooting raw files, knowing that the raw file retains the color information, can I set the a7s to B&W display and select a color for focus peaking to make manual focusing easier with this lens?

A: Yes: You have the choice of changing the Focus Peaking colour. It is limited to Red, Yellow and White, I use yellow all the time anyway so it generally makes no difference what effect I shoot in. The Peaking intensity can also be changed if it is too much or not enough. That's a camera function though, nothing to do with the lens. Hope this helps.

Q: 8. I already possess the Loxia 35mm lens. Could you minus this lens from the package of the 5 lenses plus the Zeiss Loxia Transport Case?

A: Unfortunately, this is not possible. The Loxia 5-Lens Bundle is a fixed kit and cannot be modified. The other items are available individually and you can discuss creating a custom 4-lens bundle with the transport case and gears by contacting a B&H sales representative.

Q: 9. When will it be available? It used to say January 22.

A: This item is still available only as a pre-order and has not come into our inventory yet. You can choose to be notified by email when this item becomes available by clicking on the Notify When in Stock icon on the product page.

Q: 10. How do I mount this on the Sony FS7 Camcorder? It just doesn't lock in, it only spins less than an inch then it stops fully, unable to spin any further. It just doesn't lock in, no matter what I do, they are both E-Mount, this shouldn't be a problem....?

A: The Loxia lens should mount to the Sony FS7 without issue. If you are not able to get it to mount please contact our customer service dept. to see about an exchange.

[Sony E] Background - I am a Leica M shooter since the M3 (1958). I was looking for a manual lens that came close to the Leica glass I am used to - and I think I found it! I like to control my image and this lens lets me do all that I want, plus very sharp images and good color. I will look very seriously at other Loxia lenses (specifically the 135 if/when it comes out). Only had the lens for a couple of weeks but so far it is performing exactly at I expected! Used on a Sony alpha 7.

[52 mm (Front)] I'm very, very pleased with the Loxia 50 that I got last month! Its rendering is lovely with great microcontrast and 3D, and size, weight, and feel are perfect with my A7RII. I much prefer it to the Sony 55/1.8 that it replaced. It was slightly tight to mount at first, but it became easier after a few times and is no problem now. I liked the 50 so much that I ordered the 21 a few weeks ago; it, too, is a superior lens.

[Full-Frame] Bought this to pair with my a7ii. Just great. Amazing rendering of colors. Very nice to be able to shoot a MF lens in A mode.

[f/2] I spent more time debating this lens than I have any other I've owned. Despite having read nothing but fantastic reviews, I just wasn't quite sure until I got my hands on one and really put it to practice. The focus ring is an absolute treat. Butter-smooth with very useful hard stops. So easy to really nail some sharp focus. The de-clickable aperture ring is nice. Not sure how well it would hold up for film but certainly useful. The one thing that really had me concerned at first was the quality of the bokeh. In some shots it's very nice, but in other shots I feel it can be very distracting, as it is not very smooth. However, after coming to terms with the fact that most clients don't care about bokeh (or even know what it is for that matter), I found that I can easily correct it in Photoshop by simply adding a gaussian blur layer to soften it out. At the end of the day your photos are measured by composition, focus and lighting/color. The size and weight is very appropriate for the a7 bodies. I can focus on getting my shot nicely composed and in focus without worrying about a bulky or heavy lens that I'm having to support. I normally appreciate the benefit of auto-focus, but honestly I think it sometimes makes me a lousy photographer/videographer. I've grown more used to taking full ownership of where my focus is landing. If I review my shots and find that they're not in focus, I can only blame myself instead of the auto-focus, which in turn pushes me to be more accurate the next go around. I was skeptical at first, but I cannot wait to invest in the other Loxia lenses.

[Full-Frame] I purchased this lens for my A7s and I use my camera strictly for video. It is important to remember that Zeiss designed these lenses for primarily video use. There are advantages in the construction over the distigon. You can hit F2 with no issues what so ever, I am constantly shooting here with no issues. The corners are incredibly sharp and the lens feels great. I love the de-clicked aperture and am glad there is no auto focus. I hope Zeiss makes a whole line of Loxia as I will buy them all!

[1.64 lb] If you are a purist like me and want an excellent image quality providing lens, then consider this lens too. Excellent contrast, micro-contrast, colors, sharpness and Zeiss character. Dont hesitate if you have this on your wish list, push the button and will not regret it.

[Sony E] I love this lens. The automatic lenses that I have purchased in the past have only been a frustration to me. This manual lens is straight forward and so nice to use, and I love the results- so sharp and clear! I am very happy that I bought this lens!!

[Sony E] One of the biggest joys in shooting mirrorless is the size, so it didn’t make sense for me to stick a huge lens on my A7. Beautiful color matched with a somewhat quirky bokeh, its images have a very pleasing and unique look. Great little lens that won’t cost a fortune

[1.64 lb] I'm a retro-grouch who has used manual focus RF equipment since the age of the dinosaurs. As such, I prefer the manual focus experience on my Sony as well. From that perspective alone, this lens delivers! Exquisite smoothness and superb construction put this lens up with the very best. And the optical performance? Just attaching the lens and looking through the viewfinder told me all I needed to know. The rendering has the classic Zeiss look, with a wonderful dimensionality, without the excessive contrast that sometimes mars the performance of modern lenses. Sharpness is breathtaking; I don't pixel peep, but wide open, in the corners, the trees silhouetted on the mountaintop three miles away are as crisp and undistorted as they are in the center at f/8. Beats every other lens I have, and will probably be my new favorite 50mm. If you don't need or want autofocus, and want this focal length, buy this lens!

[52 mm (Front)] The loxia 50mm is my very first manual lens.

It helped me to picked up the joy of taking photos again.
