The 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Canon EF Mount from Rokinon is a fast manual focus prime lens. It provides a very fast maximum aperture of T1.5 for effective low light capture and shallow depth of field control and an 8 blade iris for attractive bokeh. Optimized for cinema and video applications, the focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been de-clicked, which enables smooth iris pulls. In addition, bright aperture and distance markings are printed on the lens barrel facing laterally to facilitate easier control by a focus puller.

The 50mm has a minimum focus distance of 1.5'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element to reduce aberrations. In addition, a lens multi-coating helps to improve light transmission reducing flare and ghosting. The filter thread diameter is 77mm.

With this 50mm lens, Rokinon introduces the DS series of cinema lenses, unifying their cine lenses in more than just name. Each of the DS branded lenses will offer the same alignment of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each DS lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video. Lastly, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from either side of the camera.

Functional as still photo lens but optimized for cinema and video shooting with geared aperture and focus rings, de-clicked aperture for smooth exposure transitions and laterally printed aperture and distance markings. The 50mm T1.5 is part of the DS series of cine lenses, sharing characteristics and features that unify the series and make it easier for users to swap out lenses when shooting video. Each DS lens provides aligned focus and aperture rings so that readjustment of the follow focus is not necessary when switching lenses. Also each lens has been tested to match color and contrast for a consistent look and less potential post-processing. Finally, all DS lenses print focus scales on each side of the lens barrel for ease of use from both sides of the camera.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what's the difference between?Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Sony E-MountRokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens for Sony E Mount

A: The DS in the new version stands for Dual Scale which means there is a smart and dumb side scale for operating the lens from either side of the camera, instead of the top side position that the other versions offered. The focus and iris gear positions have been moved along the axis in order to maintain a consistent position from lens to lens making swapping a very easy when using a follow focus or motors. Additionally, each of the lenses is carefully color matched to a certain degree in order to sustain a specific cinematic look throughout the set. The optics however in each set, remain the same as the non-DS set.

Q: 2. Will this fit on the Blackmagic Ursa Mini?

A: Yes, you can get it with a EF or PL mount.

Q: 3. Can I use this lens on lumix g7

A: Yes, this is an MFT mount lens. It will work with the Lumix G7.

Q: 4. How does this compare to a Canon 35 1.4 L?

A: The Canon 35mm 1.4 L lens has autofocusing while the Rokinon 35mm Cine lens is manual focus only and is meant for video/film production.

Q: 5. If I get the MFT mount lens set will they still be 24, 35, 50, 85mm on my BMPCC4K or will they be different?

A: The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has a 1.9x crop factor, any lens that is put on the camera will be subject to that crop factor. A 35mm will be the equivalent of a 66.5mm lens.

Q: 6. Since this is a manual lens, what adapter do I need to get this to fit an EF mount cam?

A: As the flange distance between an EF mount to sensor (more distance) and Micro-Four Thirds/MFT (less distance) mount to sensor varies, an EF mount lens can be mounted to a MFT mount (with adapter), however an MFT mount lens will unfortunately not be able to be mounted to an EF mount, with an adapter. If there was such an adapter, the lens would likely also vignette with its MFT mount, it is a smaller mount opening. In short, the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Micro Four Thirds Mount, would not be compatible with an EF mount camera.

Q: 7. Can I used for photography purposes? what's the difference between a photo lens?

A: It can be used for photos, however you will be unable to autofocus at all since there are no electronic connections with the camera. This will perform similarly to other Rokinon manual lenses, but what makes it designed for video is the focusing gears for use with a follow focus system. If you're using this for photos keep in mind those gears may be uncomfortable to focus with your hand. Another difference is the de-clicked aperture ring that is measured in T-stops instead of F-Stops. No clicks means a smooth change of light coming in so exposure changes don't look choppy in video. T stops are an actual measurement of light that comes through the lens, whereas F stops are ratios and an f/1.4 may let more or less light in from lens to lens. The numbers will still yield similar results, so T/1.5 on this lens is close to an F/1.4 or 1.8 on a photo lens, just a different method of marking it. This lens can also be a little long and heavy depending on what you're pairing it with (would look ridiculous on an a6500 or something small), so another option is the newer Rokinon AF 35mm that might be better for photos and is much more compact

Q: 8. Can I use this lens with Sony Fs700R EF mount?

A: The Sony FS700R comes with a Sony E mount, not a Canon EF mount. You can get an adapter such as this: FotodioX Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Vizelex ND Throttle Adapter B&H # FOVNDTACS. With such an adapter, you can use the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Canon EF Mount on the FS700R camcorder.

Q: 9. Is this camera mount altered in any way to accomodate emount? What I Mean is that has the flange been elongated for the emount? Is this emount lens from Rokinon made for emount or has a ring or some type of adapter been welded or molded onto it?

A: You can mount it straight to the camera

Q: 10. How much does it weight?

A: This lens weighs 24.7 oz.

[8] This is my favorite 50mm lens so far. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is beautiful, but I chose this lens to try out using T stops. I use this lens for close-up portraiture and for video all the time, and am looking forward to getting the Rokinon Cine lens series soon.

[8] I went into the store and was going to purchase a different Rokinon 50mm. It was specifically for micro four thirds cameras. But I also had my eye on this one. The difference was the price range, but I went with the more expensive choice based on it recommendation and quality, and don't regret it at all! I want to get the Rokinon Cine lens series soon.

[Full Frame] I had been looking at upgrading my EF lenses from the kit Canon lenses that come with just about every bundle to a lens that not only fits my personal taste but also my budget. The Rokinon Cine DS line was the perfect fit. This 24mm lens not only looks great but also comes as close to a true Cine lens as possible on a budget like this. It's a great lens if you can't afford the more precise cine lenses. Overall, this one will be one of my go to lenses for video production.

[8] The first of many Rokinons I will be buying this year. Having fun shooting test footage with it right now and am impressed with what I can pick up thus far. If you're getting into filming or rebuilding your equipment list after a tumultuous few years, this is a descent starter.
