With this Realtree AP Snow LensCoat Cover for Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL VRfor the Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL VR from LensCoat, you can protect your lens against scratches, bumps, and the elements. The waterproof neoprene cover also acts as a thermal barrier, making the lens more comfortable to handle in both hot and cold temperatures. The cover is easy to install and remove, sliding on like a sleeve and leaving no residue on the lens. It has clear, flexible PVC windows over the AF and IS controls and the distance scale. A small hole lines up with the camera's mount indicator to make quick, easy work of aligning the lens with the mount.

Another benefit of the Lens Cover is that it can help break up the shape of your lens, making it less noticeable to wildlife so you're less likely to scare them off. The cover is made in the USA from 100% closed-cell neoprene. It also includes an additional piece designed for when the lens is zoomed out to 400mm, which can be attached and removed quickly via the touch-fastener strip.

Q: 1. I am a professional astronomer who will need to buy a bunch of these lenses to observer the entire sky (ASAS-SN project). We need to know what the image quality is, namely so-called FWHM, how do we find out? Our previous version of thsi lesn delivers 12 arcsec FEHM.

A: In order that we may best assist you, please write us with the source of your information regarding your previous lens. provideo@bhphoto.com.

Q: 2. What is the main reason to own this lens instead of a Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E?

A: The main reason for getting the NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lens is that you would get world-class, best possible image quality. The NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens is very good but is not in the same league. With the NIKKOR 180-400mm, you also get the best possible build quality with one full stop faster f/stop. If your desire is to get the best possible imaging quality for birding or sports or landscape, the NIKKOR 180-400mm is for you.

Q: 3. Will this stay on the lense when using a close fitting case like the Think Tank Digital Holster 30 V2?

A: Yes, the LensCoat Cover for the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S (Realtree Max4) will stay on if you put the lens into the Think Tank Photo Digital Holster 30 V2.0 (Black).

Q: 4. Could you please explain exactly what Nikon refurbished means? Can you give examples as to why a lens would be refurbished? Does a refurbished lens still have the same manufacturer’s warranty as a new lens? Is it a US model or gray market model?

A: Hi, Refurbished items are products that for many reasons did not meet early quality controls at the factory so were not shipped initially. After testing, a manufacturer may determine a product meets all the specifications but does not want it sold as new. A “Refurb” is such an item; which has never been sold, meets the advertised specifications and includes a warranty which may be shorter than the original one offered for a “new” item.

Q: 5. Is this a true addition or an expensive replacement to the Nikon 200-400 F4?If I slapped a 1.4x TC on the end Id have a similar piece of glass for about half the price.

A: The 180-400 is a VERY significant improvement over the 200-400 f4. I've owned 3 copies of the 200-400. The 180-400 is much better. You will understand the joy of the built-in converter if you've tried putting on and taking off a regular TC. I've even used my 180-400 with internal TC engaged AND added an external 1.4 x TC as well. If you can afford this lens, it's worth it.

Q: 6. Which foot replacement would you recommend for this lens and why?

A: I recently purchased the Really Right Stuff replacement foot for Nikon 400mm f.2.8 FL. Unfortunately the balance of the Lens with the foot is very far forward. The foot is only about half way in the Wemberley head when neutrally balanced. I don't think this is a safe configuration. The design of the foot needs to be about 2 longer. Incidentally the foot that comes with the Lens has the same balance issue. I am using a lens coat so that may have some effect on the balance but I don't think it accounts for all of it. I have a 6 generic Wimberley plate that I mounted to the stock lens foot with 2 sticking off the front and that is working. Not as nice as a single piece replacement would be though.

Q: 7. What is the recommended backpack (with good protection) to carry this lens with reverse hood attached to a Nikon D5 camera?

A: The Think Tank Photo Glass Limo Backpack (Black), BH # THGL is a suitable backpack for your D5 with this Nikon lens attached. https://bhpho.to/2K1XGcx

Q: 8. With this lenscoat attached, will the lens still fit securely in the Nikon case?

A: The LensCoat is very tight to the lens and like a skin. It should be fine and not prevent it from fitting in the case.It has not been tested specifically but there is usually enough room to squeeze it in to a case.

Q: 9. Will this lens work on the Nikon D780?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens is a F-Mount FX Format lens that's compatible with Nikon D780.

Q: 10. Is the lens foot removable?

A: Absolutely. I replaced mine after I tried 5 different feet and found I like this one best: Kirk LP-46 Replacement Arca-Type Quick Release Lens Plate/Foot. It brings the foot much closer to the lens, and lowers the balance point of the lens and easily allows the use of this 1.5 lb gimbal head: Jobu Design Jobu Jr.3 Deluxe Gimbal Kit with Swing-Arm HM-J3D (This GREAT gimbal is HALF the weight of most other decent gimbals.)You will also find the following foot works very well, and gives added space between the lens and the foot to give your fingers more room carrying the lens with winter gloves: Jobu Design Low Profile Replacement Foot--200-400mm f4 (I have this foot on my 200-400 f4)

[0.3 lb] This is the best fitting Lens Coat lens cover I've had, and I'm now on my third 400mm f/2.8. Last one I used this on was as spotless, clean and ding-free as the day I purchased it. Others' milage may vary since much depends upon how a person treats their photo gear. Small cost to add an additional insurance policy for when the lens is in use. Easy to put on and stays where its placed.

[0.3 lb] I decided to protect my new lens with a Lenscoat tree pattern cover. Well, if you have strong hands, installation would be easy. Hands with arthritis is another story. I did get it put on lens but it took some time. I left the last piece off as I often use the polarizing filter. All in all it serves a good purpose and looks pretty good out in the Everglades.
