Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What would I have to buy to make this work ? I have the mixer, a 48v phantom power supply, and a set of cables. One set of cables can connect the microphone to the power supply as the input, and the other singular cable serves as the output so the computer can recognize the supply. Wat cables are required to actually use the mixer itself ?

A: This should really be done with an interface. That being said we will work with what you have. The mic if its a condenser. Take the mic cable and plug one end in the mic and the other into the phantom power supply. Then take another XLR out of the phantom power supply and plug it in the mic input of your mixer. Now to get the mixer into your computer you should be using an interface. But you dont have one so we will have to do this the only way possible. You will need a Y cable. Two RCA males to one 3.5mm male. The B and H part number is B&H # HOYCRTRSRCA6. To the right of the mic EQ you will see 4 RCAs that say Tape Out. Plug the Y cable into the 2 RCAs that say out and the 3.5mm into your computer.

Q: 2. Do I need a separate pre-amp to plug the Sennheiser AVX transmitter w/ TRS to XLR into Channels 3 or 4 and get a clean signal?

A: Channels 3/4 on the Mackie Mix8 - 8-Channel Compact Mixer are line level inputs, so yes, you would need a microphone preamp to connect a mic level signal to them.

Q: 3. Would this work with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as my USB connection? I teach online and want to mix in background music from an ipad into my Zoom calls.

A: Yes, the Mackie Mix5 - 5-Channel Compact Mixer could be used to receive background music from an iPad and then send its signal out to the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface, which may allow for more level control over the music. In theory you could also connect the iPad's audio output directly to the Scarlett with the proper cable.

Q: 4. Does anyone know of a a lockable cover that can go over this board to prevent unauthorized use?

A: Not aware of any available.

Q: 5. can I run the dual xlr out to my computer to record, while monitoring with the dual 1/4 inch to headphones?

A: Yes, you can connect the left and right XLR outputs to your computer using a USB audio interface that accepts line level input like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface (B&H # FOSCARL2I23G), PreSonus Studio 24c Desktop 2x2 USB Type-C Audio/MIDI Interface (B&H # PRSTUDIO24C) or any other model with two inputs compatible for line level signal. The interface will also have a headphone jack for monitoring while recording. If you don't already have the 802VLZ4, you may want to consider purchasing a mixer that has a built-in USB audio interface like the Mackie ProFX10v3 (B&H # MAPROFX10V3) or ProFX6v3 (B&H # MAPROFX6V3), Yamaha MG10XU (B&H # YAMG10XU), Soundcraft Notepad-12FX (B&H # SO12CDTMUSBE), or Allen & Heath ZED-10 (B&H # ALZED10).

Q: 6. Is the gain from this mixer sufficient for use with vintage ribbon microphones, such as the RCA77Dx? Thanks.

A: Tough to tell. I use a Heil PR 40 and do have to crank up the gain a bit. Great mixer and clean sound. Its worth giving it a try.

Q: 7. Hi...Just received the mix5...small and nice but...how can I listen to only headphones without also having music coming out the speakers? there is a to headphones button but doesn't do anything...thanks

A: Hi Michael, I have yet to try this with the Mix8 but I will look at it tonight. Have you tried engaging the To Phones button and disengaging the To Mix button? I am guess you have since it seems to be the way it would be done if possible. Though looking at the location of the buttons I am now wondering if they send the RCA inputs to the phones or to Main since they are stacked next to the RCA connectors. I'll do some more looking and experimenting on the 8 and let you know. - Craig

Q: 8. Do you offer the version with the universal power supply (100 - 240 V) ?

A: No, we do not. The version of the 402VLZ4 that we offer is for U.S. consumption only.

Q: 9. What is the difference between LINE IN 3-4 and TAPE IN on Mackie 402VLZ4?

A: Tape in is just designed for playback and is routed directly to the output. Channel 3 and 4 is ballanced and will accept level signals.

Q: 10. The interior dimension of the bag appear to be smaller than the size of mixer. Does the bag fit?

A: Yes the bag fits the mixer. Forced perspective can be deceiving.

[3-Band EQ ] My Behringer X1204USB mixer died after many years of faithful service. After looking around, I noticed that a lot of small USB mixers don't have proper send and returns - this is a key feature for me as I like to do mix-minus with my friends on Zoom and Discord. This mixer - for less than $100 - sounds great, gives me just what I need and nothing more.

One thing folks like about USB is that there's no messing with line levels into your computer. If you know what you're doing you can set the input level on the computer just where you need and almost never bother with it again.

Build quality is great, the knobs have the right amount of firmness when turned. Layout is mostly clear, though the phantom power button being between the headphone and aux master is a weird choice.

One thing that I didn't realize until I was trying it out is that the aux send is a mono output. Not a huge dealbreaker (especially for things like vocal effects sends or mix-minus to a remote listener who needs to hear other content) but worth noting.

It does the vast majority of what I want it to do without issue. Strongly recommended.

[3.285 lb] This Mackie mixer is just perfect for my home transmission station. I feed my Heil Microphone into it and then use the AUX send to go to the EQ and then feed it back to another line in. Great for the price. One thing is missing.. It needs a power switch!

[Up to +10 dB ] My Rotary club bought this to use routing and mixing audio for our hybrid in-person and Zoom meetings. Has the functionality we need. Light, but sturdy, with clean sound.
