Delivering more than just a basic SDI to HDMI converter, the DECIMATOR 2 SDI to HDMI Converter with Downscalerfrom DECIMATOR 2 SDI to HDMI Converter with Downscalerprovides you with a host of features in a small package suitable for location or a studio environment. The device auto detects the incoming signal, and handles signal switching based on the DIP switch settings you select. The converter maintains a 10-bit data path for your video signal, which minimizes scaling artifacts. It incorporates one SDI input that supports signals up to 3G-SDI, and features a loop through SDI output, HDMI output for the converted signal, and a composite out that automatically scales HD signals delivering either NTSC or PAL video.

The unit passes closed captioning signals on the composite output, a useful feature for a broadcast facility. The HDMI output can display selectable frame markers or "Graticules" as well as up to 16 channels of audio meters. The unit also de-embeds the audio from the SDI stream, and makes it available as 2 channels of analog audio. External DIP switches allow you to select how the unit handles conversion to HDMI and SD video from SDI, and which stereo pair is available on the analog audio outputs. The converter features a locking DC power socket and a mounting bracket allowing you to attach it to a wall or possibly the back of a monitor.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What type of cable is recommended to send the SDI?

A: Hi Michael, This is Jules from product support at Symbiosis, Decimator's master distributor in the US. Any good quality SDI cable with full size BNC connectors will be fine for carrying the SDI signal as long as it's rated for the combination of format and distance you need, most of the quality cable manufacturers have tables available that show the maximum distance each cable will reliably carry the format you are intending to use. B&H stock a great selection of cables and their experts are really knowledgable (as well as friendly!) so I'm sure they will help you choose a suitable one if you can let them know the format you are sending (for example: 720p25, 1080p60) and also the length of cable you need. I hope this helps... Jules

Q: 2. Does this work with 4K signals or just 1080P?

A: No. 3G Sdi only. Use Freak Show for 4K

Q: 3. I want to convert SDI signal from my NTSC camera to an SDI Signal in PAL (for both audio and video) Will this converter do that?

A: I'm afraid not. The Decimator 2s SDI loop output will repeat whatever signal is going into the SDI input, so while the HDMI signal would be converted to PAL the SDI loop-out would remain NTSC. To do a conversion and come out in a different format through SDI, you could use the MD-HX, MD-Cross or MD-DUCC. All of these will take NTSC SDI in and output PAL SDI with embedded audio.

Q: 4. We are converting HDMI to SDI using a BMD micro converter so we can send a teleprompter PC output to our router. However, our teleprompters only have composite BNC. Can we use this to convert the SDI signal coming from our converter to composite BNC and send it to our router?

A: Yes, the Decimator 2 will be able to convert an SDI signal to composite BNC.

Q: 5. Can the Decimator 2 simultaneously downconvert the input to composite while passing through the original format to HDMI?I want to input 720p59 over HD-SDI and output both 720p59 over HDMI and downconverted NTSC composite (anamorphic).

A: From what I have read, yes it can, however I will double check and get back to you. However, I am using 1080p/60 so there may be a difference for you. But this thing is fantastic

Q: 6. Decimator MD-LX - What type of mounting Solution? Can these Devices be stacked in a Rackmounted solution?

A: This will fit on a 1U shelf. Here are possible solutions: Middle Atlantic UFA Shelf (1 Space) B&H # MIUFA8F1, Gator Cases Racksworks 1U Shelf with Universal Hole Pattern B&H # GAGRWSHELF1U, Camplex Universal Rackmount for Blackmagic Design Micro Converters (1 RU) B&H # CAXBMICRO1RM.

Q: 7. Is it possible to connect an SDI-in and it simultaneously releases SDI -out and HDMI-out together?

A: Yes. Setting can be changed via usb control panel. According to manufacture you can connect an SDI-in and it simultaneously releases SDI -out and HDMI-out together with no control panel setting adjustments.

Q: 8. Is HDCP compliant?

A: Yes, it will pass an hdcp compliant signal. Just remember to make sure that everything else in the chain is hdcp.

Q: 9. Can this device convert HDMI YUV signal to RGB?

A: Dear Nicholas, This is Jules from Product Support at Symbiosis, Decimator Design's master distributor for your region. I can confirm that the MD-LX can convert a YUV HDMI input to RGB HDMI output. To change the type of HDMI output you can use the USB Control Panel application available from Decimator's website. If you need a hand setting it up when it arrives please feel free to contact us on support@symbiosis.com. Kind Regards Jules

Q: 10. I want to convert the SDI 1080i signal from my switcher to a 1080p signal to my live streaming server for YouTube. Will this unit do that?

A: I do technical support for Symbiosis, Decimator's master distributor in the US. The Decimator 2 is definitely capable of doing what you are describing if your streaming server has HDMI input. If you bring the 1080i signal in on the SDI input you can configure the Decimator 2 to output 1080p over HDMI.

[1.37 lb] These were suggested by an associate and he was absolutely correct. They work exactly as described. Using this for a live shoot, HDMI in from Camcorder, HDMI out to monitor, SDI out to switcher. Nice!

[1.37 lb] I've used the ATEM Mini Pro Iso for a couple of years now and haven't really had an issue with it when I plug my cameras in directly to the switcher. However, recently I started using wireless units from Hollyland with the ATEM and Input 1 gave me the pink/green screen due to the input only accepting YUV and not RGB (Inputs 2, 3, and 4 accept either YUV or RGB).

I got this unit just hours before it was needed in a show and once I found the right setting, BOOM! Input 1 cleaned up and looked like my other RGB inputs. Settings were changed with the USB utility from Decimator's website. In case anyone else needs to know, the settings are HDMI YPbPr 4:2:2.

[1.37 lb] If you need to ever convert a signal from SDI to HDMI or vice-versa, this is perfect. I havent used mine yet because the companies I work for always carry some of these with their video gear, but I bought it just in case. It works perfectly and every company I know is buying these Decimator converters so they are becoming industry standard.

[1.37 lb] I hesitate to give a good review, only because I don't want to make it any more popular. They tend to run out of stock whenever I need one LoL!

What can I say? They work and are reliable. I'm gradually replacing all our Blackmajic Design converters with these.
