The Tiffen Series 9 Warm Linear Polarizer Filtercan be applied to create a warm cast over an entire image while helping to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

The warming effect of this filter can be obtained under daylight when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected. This filter's overall coloration reflects a mired shift value of +45.

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus, is non-coated, and has approximately 40% average light transmission. Constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, it is mounted for use in third-party or custom filter holders. No front or rear threads are included on this filter's ring, or mount.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there one or a quantity of four filters per package?

A: This would be one linear polarizer measuring 4 X 4.

Q: 2. I am going to use this on an old Konica auto S2. Is this filter appropriate for use on a range finder and will the threads pitch match on the lens? Thanks.

A: I was fairly successful using it without checking through the live view on a Leica 240 MP. I often photograph in a constant desert or sun lit canyon/river area. I first use the filter to look at the scene without the camera lens attached. I could tell where the max effect was in relation to the sun direction (I live above the northern 45 degree lat) and then know that that direction was best for the max. I used old film leica's in a similar manner many years ago too...AJZ

Q: 3. Can I use this filter on a Lee filter system holder?

A: There are two industry standard nominal filter thicknesses: 2 mm and 4 mm. The Lee holder, while normally set up for 2 mm, can, with the addition of longer screws, can accommodate 4 mm filters as well.

Q: 4. Will this filter help with glare on a spotting scope?

A: Yes it will reduce reflected light off water and other reflective surfaces and, depending on the angle of the sun, make the sky a much darker blue.

Q: 5. Does this circular polarizing filter have antireflective coatings?

A: No, that filter is not multi-coated.

Q: 6. Can someone tell me the difference between this product and Tiffen's product?(a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html/a)

A: The Hoya linear polarizing filter was designed for use on older film cameras - See the following description of a linear polarizing filter - (Two kinds of polarizing filters are the PL (Linear Polarizing) andPL-CIR (Circular Polarizing) filters which have the same effect ofreducing glare, however, there are differences in the way each worksin combination with your specific camera so it is important toresearch and choose the correct version of filter for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to splitthe light (a.k.a. beam) entering the viewfinder in order tocalculate exposure and focusing distance. PL filters can sometimesinteract with these light controlling devices to give unpredictableexposure or focusing. If your camera, whether auto or manual, isequipped with this kind of device, we recommend using a PL-CIR filter. Both types of filters allow you not only to remove unwantedreflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc., butalso filter out atmospheric haze enabling colors to become moresaturated and appear clearer with a much sharper contrast. These effects will prove to be invaluable to photographers at anylevel of interest.)

Q: 7. Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

Q: 8. I'm looking to buy this filter to hold in front of the Rokinon 14mm wide angle lens I will buy soon since this lens does not have threads to screw on a circular polarizer. Will there be any adverse effects to my images by holding the filter in front of the lens?

A: If you plan to use this on a digital camera, I advise you to reconsider - a linear polarizer is designed for film cameras, and this will not be compatible with digial sensors. Unfortunately, there are no filter holders made that can currently accommodate the Rokinon 14mm.

Q: 9. Will this fit in the NiSi V5 pro holders?

A: From the NiSi V5-PRO manual: The filter holder can be used only with square filters with a width of 100 mm and a thickness of 2 mm.

Q: 10. does this cause the autofocus or metering system of the camera to malfunction?

A: Yes it will. Autofocus systems and exposure systems of newer cameras require the use of circular polarizers. Linear polarizer are meant for use in film cameras.

[5 x 5 x 1"] I use this filter to eliminate glare, which it does very nicely. I often take photos of shiny cars and window displays, and before I bought this filter I was disappointed with reflections that inadvertently appeared in my pictures.

[Glass] Excellent value in Polarizing filters. I was looking for a second filter for a new lens, but I didn't want to spend a small fortune. I found this to be a better quality filter than the Hoya I already own and spent more on!

[5 x 5 x 1"] Very good for the price you pay, 1/3rd of the price of a circular polarizer. Linear polarizer works very well with my Nikon D300 on the Nikon 75-300 zoom lens: autofocus is fast and accurate, I can't see any difference in focusing with or without the filter.

[5 x 5 x 1"] No surprises here, polarizes the light and has a slightly warm cast. I bought the linear polarizer hoping it had a more pronounced effect than the circular polarizer but it doesn't seem to be significantly different.

[0.26 lb] First, I've been shooting for over 10 years, but never had the opportunity to use a matte box. So,Its brand new for me to work with filter. But I regret I didn't doit earlier !! And this filter was perfect for me to begin. Its really useful to shoot trough windows and even from the surface of any water source I've did so far. And at the same time, its a warmer, so it give a better look to my any scene !
