Celestron NexStar 5SE 125mm Telescope Kitis a powerful, versatile, and user-friendly Schmidt-Cassegrain-style scope that can be used for observing everything from the Moon and planets to bright deep-sky objects like stars, galaxies, and nebulae. Using Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT multicoating system, light transmission is increased throughout the entire optical path with antireflection multicoated lenses, highly reflective multicoated mirrors, and crown optical glass elements. While the focal ratio is a relatively slow f/10, the mount's precision tracking system and integrated equatorial wedge allow it to be a competent astrophotography imaging platform for the Moon and planets.

Driving the dual servo motors on the mount is the brain of the NexStar 5SE: the iconic NexStar+ computer hand controller. Packed with 40,000+ celestial objects, it can hold up to 100 additional user-defined destinations and is updatable via the Celestron website. It has multiple alignment procedures to get you observing fast—including the super-easy SkyAlign system. Capable of being used in the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, the NexStar has sidereal, lunar, and solar tracking speeds to accurately follow near- and deep-sky objects, plus nine slew speeds and the ability to automatically trigger a camera's shutter release for Fastar or piggyback wide-field photography or conventional prime-focus astrophotography.

[650 mm] MY SHORT REVIEW: This is a great Telescope, Mount and Tripod. It's a good size for portability, it has exceptional image quality, it's easy to use and is made of quality materials. MY LONG REVIEW: On my first night of good seeing and clear skies I was able to see fantastic views of a Waxing Crescent Moon, Jupiter and at least 3 of it's moons and a tiny red spec called Mars. My first set up and SkyAlign(ment) took about 10 minutes (assembly, lining up the star pointer and the scope, leveling the tripod, typing in location and date info, 3 star align). The moon practically fills the field of view of the included 25mm Plssl eyepiece. And although Jupiter was clear, a shorter focal length eyepiece or barlow lens will be needed for a larger, and probably dimmer, image. My location in the city surrounded by trees in my back yard didn't allow me to see any deep space objects, so I'm looking forward to finding some nebulas and galaxies. I was originally thinking about getting the 6 or 8 NexStar SE but I was persuaded to get the 5 after doing a lot of research on viewing in the city and the fact that the 4 and 5 NexStar SE telescope tripods have an Equatorial Wedge feature that the 6 and 8 models do not have. This is important for long exposure astrophotography and that is something I may want to try in the future. I also used the scope to see distant buildings since Catadioptrics can be used for terrestrial viewing as well. But be aware that although the view is top-up corrected with the mirror star diagonal, it's not left-right corrected as it would be with a prism diagonal. I also read many reviews stating that an external power supply in conjunction with the 8 AA batteries will last longer. The AA batteries being used for those rare times the power cord is pulled out accidentally. So far I feel that this is a great investment for myself and my family to enjoy astronomy. Clear Skies!

[f/5] I use this for deep space and planetary imaging. If you align it correctly, it has great tracking capabilities, however the longer the exposure, the more chance of slight trailing off you will get.

[36.2 lb] Got it mostly for my son but I have always wanted to get into astronomy, however, my family was too poor when I was young. The price is not bad and the features are really nice for what we wanted. It is easy to setup. Haven't started using the GoTo features yet because it is too fun looking in Stellarium for what is up in the sky and running outside to find it with the scope. Eventually, we will start fiddling with GoTo to check out its capabilities. The scope is much larger than it appears to be in the pictures which was a very good surprise. Keep in mind that a general rule of thumb for max magnification is 50x the size of the aperture in inches which comes out to 250x for this scope. To get that magnification, one will need a 5mm eyepiece and this scope only comes with a 25mm. The bigger planets require something around 150-180x so a 7mm or so may be needed as well. Overall though, this scope is highly recommended!

[Dovetail] No problems or issues. Good optics. Good mechanics. Fully assembled weight 10,3 kg. Eats batteries fast, need a powerbank. Included finder is cheap plastic, will throw away.
Tripod is very good. Good focuser.

Star diagonal is 9/10, but it is prism type. Buying a 60-180 USD one of dielectric mirror type is a marginal improvement, do it only if budget allows.

Included 25 mm Celestron eyepiece is decent, also eyeglass friendly. Will keep it despite existent collection of Deloses and Pentaxes. No need to replace it even with very expensive ones.

Buyers would need in addition, a 7-8 mm eyepiece for planetary observations and 12-14 mm one, those shall be expensive.

[36.2 lb] Bought primarily for my son, who is a budding Astronomer ;) we have used it so far to view Jupiter, the Moon and the Sun. Jupiter is a bit small with the included 25mm lens (with a 1250mm focal length, this comes out to 50x magnification) but we were able to see the cloud bands and four moons very clearly, the look on my son's face is one of those cherished memories I'll never forget. The Sun and the Moon both filled the FOV and the detail was excellent! Saw some nice sunspots, depth in moon craters, etc... We purchased 7mm and 5mm eyepieces to see the planets better but it has, literally, been raining every day since the eyepieces arrived. As well, we have not been able to get Skyalign to work at all, been reading up on other methods to get tracking going so it is a work in progress at this point but we are loving the NextStar 5SE so far, highly recommended, 4.5 stars!

[32 x 26 x 12.5"] I really like this scope. Set up was very easy. Operation is very straight forward. Images are fantastic and I am just now starting to use a webcam/imaging software for astrophotography. This scope travels well. I fit the entire scope, including the tripod into a Pelican iM2950 Storm Case (get the one w/ foam and cut to fit). Highly recommend this scope as a starter or intermediate.
