Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. why can't I get pro foto stuff sent to Canada ??

A: I'd betit has something to do with customs. You may have to drive down to NYC or buy off of eBay to get profoto gear.

Q: 2. This question may be silly but, does the soft box come with the stand? I couldn't get a straight answer from the description.

A: And no question is silly. We were ALL inexperienced B&H shopper at one time. Keep asking and good luck

Q: 3. Does this work with Einstein 640?

A: Yes. I use it exclusively with Einsteins. It is more stable than the smaller, but heavier, 47 Paul C. Buff octa.

Q: 4. Will the assembled 3' octa fit in the back seat of a car, say an Accord?

A: Yes sure! You can also undo the velcro a bit of the softbox which makes it even easier to place it in some tight areas!

Q: 5. Should I get this even though I already have the 5' Octa?

A: It would depend on what other boxes you already owned and if you specifically needed it. If you own only the 5' then it would be too similar. If you own a wide variety and just need it for a specific purpose then go for it.

Q: 6. Would this be the correct ring for the Profoto B1 light?

A: The picture shows the octa bank not the ring. I have a Hensel and got the ring that lets me attach the RFi bank to it. Since you have a B1, you are just going from Profoto to Profoto and will not have any problem. There's always a speed-ring that will work.

Q: 7. Does this work with the 500 air TTL?

A: If you are referring to the Profoto B1 500 AirTTL Battery-Powered Flash, B&H # PRB1AIR, then yes, the Profoto 5.0' RFi Octa Softbox would work with the monolight, but would require the purchase of the Profoto RFi Speedring for Profoto Flash Heads, B&H # PRSRP, to connect the softbox to the monolight.

Q: 8. Can somebody please tell me what is the difference between RFi Softbox and OCF Softbox? I am very confused by the abbreviation used RFi. Thank you.

A: The RF in RFi stands for recessed front. The OCF version is part of the off camera flash line that are intended to be used mainly with the new B2 heads battery powered heads. The OCF modifiers have a different and lighter weight speed ring and have ribs that are not removable. They are more portable and a bit quicker to assemble. Since the B2 heads are much smaller than the D1 or B1 heads, it wouldn't be very practical to use the heavier RFi modifiers with them.Equally important is the ability to control and shape the light. RFi softboxes have a deeper shape that directs the light forward rather than spreading it to the sides. The RF in RFi stands for recessed front. The recessed front minimizes stray light. It is also used for mounting the optional Softgrid. The Softgrid is a clever tool that creates an even more directed light, which in turn allows for even more precise light shaping. Other optional tools include the Flat Front Diffuser and the Stripmask.

Q: 9. Can I get a speedring for Speedotron.

A: There is the Profoto RFi Speedring for Speedotron Flash Heads B&H # PRSRRS which will connect this RFi 4' Octa Softbox to a Speedotron Black Line or Brown Line M11 head.

Q: 10. Do I need to get a stand with this soft box? If so what kind?

A: i'd say you need a stand if you want the light to not be on the floor.

[5 lb] I use this octabox for both indoor and outdoor applications. Get a good solid stand for it and you don't have to worry as much about the wind taking this away with your strobe. The round catchlight in the eye is more pleasing to me than a square or rectangular softbox. I use it with my Profoto B1 500 airttl.

[Yes] The materials and build quality of this softbox are excellent. I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come, so that's important to me. I expect nothing less from Profoto products.

[Yes] I have used this softbox for years at my school and studio that I frequent and am thinking about buying my own. This works as a great addition to any light setup and works amazingly for beauty and portraits and as the main light for fashion work. There are other reviews saying they are having difficulty removing the rods from the speed ring, but that is the case for most speed rings (it's the same with Broncolor, Elinchrom, and Chimera speed rings) This modifier works best on a single pack and head fully mounted on a standalone c stand with weighted arm and wheels. This allows for portability in the studio but not on location. This light is difficult to assemble and disassemble but I've only seen this size octabox in studio settings, never in an on location setting.

[Yes] Excellent build quality and light quality. Once you insert the stays into the sleeves, leave them in there. I can assemble and disassemble in under a minute. For those who struggle with the assembly, read the instructions! Make sure you insert the stays at 180 degrees from one another when beginning assembly. Once those four stays are in, do the same with the remaining four. Don't be afraid to put some bending pressure on the stays. Once the first two stays are installed, it often helps to put the octabox flat on the floor and apply some downward pressure to the speedring to help insert the remaining stays. Do the same when breaking-down.

[5 lb] This was easy to set up and delivers fantastic soft light. Durable and light weight for on location shooting. Soft even light from center to edge.

[Silver] Its the quality of build and light shaping that I expect from Profoto, and I bought it to shoot a few fashion lookbooks and campaigns. Since the few fashion shoots, it has sat unused, and I recently sold it. I definitely made my money from the shoot and it had its use, but make sure youre going to use it a lot. I own the 5 also, so thats probably why it never came out of the bag since. But, I havent really touched my 5 either.

The only cons that I can think of are that the rods take some time to break in, its heavy, and be ready to muscle putting the thing together.

If youre using this, make sure you have a properly weighted and sized c-stand or boom with a counterweight. Its not that heavy to hold, but its positioning on the light makes the stand endure an off-center weight which can really be dangerous if not properly set up.

[Silver] There's a reason that Profoto has some of the most quality products around. This softbox is solidly built and once I figured out how to set it up it was fast and easy to build it. Despite the solid construction, the weight of the softbox is light and it doesn't get hot when used with their 500/500 D1 lights.

[Silver] I have experience with Profoto softboxes so I knew what I was getting. What I didn't expect was the 'new feel' of them. I'm not sure if Profoto enhanced durability with the softboxes or maybe I was using the older OCF versions, but this thing is built like a tank. If the shell gets torn, it's totally on you. It's just so durable. I see this thing lasting me 20 years.

The durability and beautiful light you get from this Profoto softbox and slight premium you pay for it make it a hands-down winner.
