Although metol is easily soluble in water, it is not soluble in a strong sodium sulfite-solution. It does dissolve readily in a weak solution of sulfite. Metol bulds image detail rapidly, and it keeps well in solution.

Metol has low-fogging tendencies and responds well to the addition of bromide, giving a very clean-working developer without any staining of film or fingers.

The energy of the developer is only slightly affected by low temperature and is only slightly reduced by the addition of bromide.

Metol alone with either sodium or potassium carbonates give a rapid working developer when the alkalies are in high concentration, but the speed of the development can easily be controlled by dilution.

The use of caustic alkali (e.g., sodium hydroxide) is not recommended with metol as there is a tendency to excessive fog. When used with sulfite alone, without additional alkali (Kodak D-230, metol provides a slow-working, fine-grain developer. This type of film developer often works well with a mild alkali, such as borax, which accelerates the rate of development without increasing the grain size appreciably (Kodak D-25).

Developers containing metol as the sole developing agent are not widely used but metol with hydroquinone provides the most widely used developer combination.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it possible to send it in Canada?

A: The Photographers' Formulary Hydroquinone (100 Grams) is only available for in-store pickup; we can't send it anywhere.

Q: 2. How long can Glycin be stored without opening the package?

A: The shelf life of glycine powders and 10x stock solutions can exceed 1 year. However, as glycine ages, it becomes oxidized and may yield yellow-colored solutions. This may affect the pH of the solution. If yellowing occurs, it is recommended that you replace the product.

Q: 3. Can I use this to replicate sweat on an athlete photo shoot?

A: Yes, you could use glycerin to replicate sweat on an athlete during a photo shoot.

Q: 4. is this a 3 piece set?

A: Hi, this is a single beaker--this one with the arrow underneath it.

Q: 5. Have these got the wider cap and opening exactly as pictured? I got some of these earlier in the year and the lid and opening were too small to pour chemicals out quickly. I'll upgrade if they've now made them exactly as pictured.

A: The Photographers' Formulary Plastic Bottle (Black, 950mL) does have a wider cap and opening compared to previous versions.

Q: 6. Do I need to mix with water? Does it comes in spray recipient?

A: The Photographers' Formulary Glycerin (100mL) needs to be diluted in water. Since this is a concentrated formula, the spray trigger cap is not provided with this bottle.

Q: 7. Can u get this in bigger size?

A: We do carry a 1.1 (4000ml) gallon version from the same manufacturer, here: https://bhpho.to/2UNUhAp

Q: 8. Is this harmful to the lungs?

A: Never heard disease because of metol

Q: 9. Can the air be squeezed out to improve shelflife of contents? Is it rigid?

A: The bottle should be mostly full, but it can be squeezed slightly to remove air. It was not designed specifically for this, but I like this bottle better than the collapsible kind because its easier to wash and keep clean between uses.

Q: 10. Can I use to replicate water drops in fresh/cold bottle drink transpiration?

A: Photographers' Formulary Glycerin (Glycerol) - 100ml can be used create droplets when photographing bottles or drinks.

[1 x 1 x 1"] Used for D-23, it works just as it should, producing lower contrast negatives.

[0.04 lb] Take this stuff, add one other chemical (sodium sulfite), some water and you have a great classic B&W film developer, D-23--and one that no one will ever discontinue manufacturing. I use it at different dilutions for everything: T-Max, HP5, FP4. It's a terrific formula. Please B&H, continue stocking both these chemicals in your Ninth Ave location!

[1 x 1 x 1"] In the past 10 years, I have found that I can be a more versatile printer just by mixing my own chemistry.
A lot of the commercial developers that were once available in the store as a package have been discontinued, and the formulas to these developers are getting easier to find since they are no longer available in package form.
I have found that Photographer's Formulary chemicals work best for people like me who are mixing a lot of their own chemicals, and I for one highly recommend them.

[0.04 lb] I recently turned to making my own D-76 from scratch. The only place I was able to find Metol in amount I wanted was BH. Even Photographers' Formulary was sold out. BH is always my go to for my photographic needs.

[1 x 1 x 1"] I began mixing my own developer film developer some years ago, and chose D-23 to match my needs: Metol, sodium sulfite, and distilled water, and I can mix it with levelling measuring spoons. I keep silica gel packets in the jar, as the metol tends to be affected by humidity, which makes it harder to measure. For economy and consistency, it's hard to beat.
