Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the lens front element extend when zooming from 16 to 35? I'll be using this with an As7ii and Ronan Gimbal. I would like it to remain fixed if the focal length changes.

A: Yes it doe extend. If you zoom it will affect your balance. Cheers,Chris

Q: 2. Can I screw filters to the front of lens?

A: Yes, you can. (I screw filters and I have no problem.)

Q: 3. Please, where is this lens made? Thanks-

A: Japan - I believe

Q: 4. Does the REAR element (the one closest to the camera sensor) move during zooming and/or focusing?

A: The rear element does not move when zooming or focusing.

Q: 5. What is the 35 mm equivalent focal length with the a6500? Thanks

A: 24 to 52 mm

Q: 6. I have a 72 mm circular polarizing filter and it won't screw onto this lens. It actually seems to be much too small. I thought this lens takes 72mm filters. What is going on?

A: The lens is 72mm and all my 72mm filters fit it including Polarizers. Your Polarizer must be marked incorrectly.

Q: 7. Anyone noticing the focus ring a bit hard to rotate? I think mine is a little bit to hard.

A: Mine is perfect.

Q: 8. will this work on a7RII?

A: Yes, the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 Lens with UV Filter Kit is compatible with the Sony a7R II camera.

Q: 9. Will this lens work for a A6000 e-mount camera?

A: Yes, the lens is compatible but because the A6000 utilizes a smaller optical circle than the lens was designed to accommodate you are paying for more lens that you can utilize with an APS-C sensor size camera. So yes, it will work but if you plan to stick with the A6000 as opposed to a full-frame sensor camera like the A7sII, you are paying for more lens than you need. If you plan to eventually upgrade your camera then this lens is a good investment. I have the same lens and find it very sharp, and functional for general landscape shots.

Q: 10. Anyone use this lens on Sony A7R? I want to use it for astrophotography and I am wondering how the constant F4 perfoms for Astro. Thanks!

A: Hey I use this on the Sony a7 (not R). The lens in beautiful at f/4 (no real problems wide open), but yeah f/4 isn't the fastest. Plenty fast for moonlit landscapes and star trails where 30 second exposures are acceptable. For milky way photography I use one of two lenses instead: Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 and Rokinon 24mm f/1.4. Using a faster lens allows you to keep your shutter speed low enough to prevent star trailing (following the 500 rule) at ISO 1600 or 3200.At 16mm f/4, you're probably going to be shooting somewhere around 20 seconds at ISO 6400. If you are happy with the a7r at 6400, you're all set. Otherwise you might look for a faster prime. Hope that helps! Cheers!

[0.19x] I have read a number of comments on this lens that it is one to stay away from. Well, I simply could not be more pleased with mine. If I really blow up a photo, there may be some softening in one corner, but I really had to look for it. Otherwise, this lens is as sharp as a tack with great color and contrast rendition. I'm not only pleased, I'm impressed.

I accept it is f/4, and it is heavy (can't fight the laws of physics) but it is doing all I wanted from it

[0.19x] I recently moved from the A6000 to A7ii full frame. Having owned a number of lenses for APS-C, I was torn in moving to the A7 series whether I should go with primes or zooms. I mainly do landscape photography and I was hesitant to go with this zoom lens over a dedicated prime. I am not a pixel peeper, but I do like to confirm when purchasing a new lens that it’s sharp in center and reasonably sharp on the corners and edges. I likely watched every review and video on this lens. Most reviews spoke very highly of the lens with the only concern being that it tended towards softness at 35mm. This did not concern me as I was mainly looking towards its use from 16-24 (my favorite focal lengths for landscapes). After purchasing the lens, I can see where so many photographers, including landscape pros, carry on about this lens. I have found CA to be quite low even at f/4. 16mm wide open is impressively sharp through the entire frame. Focus is accurate and quick. The lens produces striking sunstars with well managed flare. I also found that 35mm stopped down to f/8 is more than adequate for my needs. The lens body has a high quality feel which is typical for Sony Zeiss lenses, I am quite pleased with this lens and find that  f/4 is not a limitation for my type of photography. I highly recommend this lens.

[72 mm (Front)] Got this as a gift. I personally don't like wide angle lenses because they have frequent problems with the picture and performance. However, this lens solves all of that. I currently owned other wide angle lenses(not from Sony) but this lens is the best one I'd had so far. The only flaw that I don't personally like; the focusing wheel and zoom wheel are a bit stiff and hard to use at first. But you get used to it after a while.

[Sony E] Awesome lens for stills and video... Recently used on a Crane 1 gimbal and produced great results... Would buy again! Check out S.Marlo - Ain’t Got Forever, video we made this week using this lens. The DIY video was last minute and unplanned for promotional purposes and took only 8 hours total to make, with just me and my wife.
