Expand your listening horizons with the black Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Integrated Amplifierfrom Yamaha. Featuring up to 60W per channel of RMS power at 8 ohms, this amp is equipped with digital inputs for connecting devices like televisions and Blu-ray/DVD players. Two sets of speaker binding posts give you the ability to power two pairs of speakers in different rooms and switch between them, or have them both playing at the same time. To increase the bass output of your sound system, there's also a terminal for connecting a subwoofer.

To reduce distortion and degradation and produce the cleanest possible sound, the A-S301 employs Pure Direct Mode. Activated via a button on the front of the unit, this mode causes input signals to bypass unused circuits and cuts off those circuits' power supply. To further ensure quality sound, the amplifier's continuously variable loudness control allows you to balance low and high frequency sounds so you can hear a full tonal range at any volume.

This Yamaha amplifier was built with energy efficiency in mind, and uses a power management system to switch itself to idle mode when not in use. The A-S301's internal circuitry mirrors itself symmetrically to produce higher signal purity and lower degradation. The chassis is reinforced with a solid center bar to reduce vibration and features a brushed aluminum front panel and knobs. The system comes with a remote control for easy operation.

The amplifier design technology from Yamaha is called ToP-ART, which features an input to output with a direct symmetrical design. ToP-ART design and ART Base ensure optimum sound when processing and transmitting the audio signal. The signal is simple and direct, therefore it is less likely to be affected by noise and distortion. The left and right channels are organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for the highest signal purity. In addition, the ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) base bottom chassis and a solid center bar provide high rigidity support and dampers vibration. These design innovations contribute to this amplifier's rich audio reproduction with abundant musicality.

Notice the custom-made power transformer, custom-made block capacitors, two direct signal path speaker relays, one point grounding system, extruded aluminum heat sinks, and other top quality parts to effortlessly handle demanding audio conditions. The quality of each individual part, as well as how they work together, basically determines the sound quality of this component.

The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.

The A-S301 features an analog loudness control on the front panel, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high-frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level, compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.

The A-S301 is equipped for digital audio inputs with an optical and digital coaxial input terminal. The optical is for receiving audio from a TV and the coaxial for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player. The audio stays in the digital domain giving you pure, pristine, and dynamic sound for all of your entertainment sources.

You can connect two separate speaker systems in different rooms and switch between them or have them both play at the same time by switching the dial on the front of the unit.

You can connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records, allowing you to enjoy records in addition to modern media sources.

A terminal for connecting a subwoofer is provided, allowing you to increase the bass output of your system for a more powerful sound with better overall sound quality.

This amplifier puts itself into standby mode when it detects that it hasn't been used in approximately 8 hours, minimizing power consumption.

Control your music from afar with the included remote, finished to match the design of the amplifier. The remote comes with batteries and can also be used to control a Yamaha CD player.

With the optional YBA-11 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, you'll be able to stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth-capable mobile phone or a PC to the network receiver. This amplifier features a DC-out connection on the rear panel to power the adapter.

The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources, and the LEDs clearly show which source is selected so you can easily switch between them, even in a dark room.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to connect four 8 ohm speakers to the S-501 and listen to them at the sametime.Am I correct in setting the impedence switch to high? Thanks.

A: No. Set the impedance switch to low. Note the instructions on the back panel.

Q: 2. I have a set of 8 ohm speakers and a set of 6 ohm speakers I want to use at the same time.Do I set the impedence selecter to low or high? Thanks,Joe.

A: Set the impedance switch to "LOW"

Q: 3. How sensitive is the remote volume control at lower levels? My Denon PMA-600NE jumps too much from the lowest settings.

A: The loudness control will provide up to -30dB of attenuation of the Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Integrated Amplifier (Black), BH # YAAS301BL. If the volume is too low, turn down the volume, set the LOUDNESS control to the FLAT position, and then adjust the VOLUME again. The volume control functions in measured steps, either from the remote control or the volume control knob on the body of the receiver.

Q: 4. My speakers can be bi-amped. Can I do this with this amp.

A: You could bi-amp two speakers with this amplifier, using the second speaker zone as well as the first.

Q: 5. Does this amp take Banana Plugs to hook up the speakers?

A: The Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Integrated Amplifier (Black) BH #YAAS301BL would accept banana plugs.

Q: 6. Will this amp play all cds in multi-channel stereo.I notice it does not decode like 5.1 receivers.I am looking to upgrade my sound system. Will it sound better then the sony STR-1080 set to (multi channel stereo) with decent speakers?I dont have much experience with sound systems.THANKS,JOE.

A: This is a stereo amplifier (2 channel only) So with two speakers connected it will sound the same or slightly better than the SONY with just two speakers connected. it will not offer you any simulated surround effect as the SONY might.

Q: 7. Previous answer about 15" speakers inadequate. Would this unit support Pioneer CS-99A speakers?

A: Thank you for supplying the brand and model number of this speaker. DESCRIPTION: Pioneer CS-99A Speakers...1973-1980 Specifications Type: 5 way, 6 driver loudspeaker system Frequency Response: 25Hz to 22kHz Power Handling: 100W Crossover Frequency: 800, 2000, 5000, 1000Hz Impedance: 8Ω Sensitivity: 97dB This integrated Yamaha amplifier will drive these speakers fairly well in a small to medium sized room. But to hear their true potential, I would suggest an amplifier that delivers over 150W per channel RMS at 8 ohms.

Q: 8. I am looking at the Yamaha amplifier AS 30l to upgrade my old system. I have Bang & O Danish speakers with free wires at the end of each cable. I see no place for free wires on this amplifier or the Yamaha AS500. It looks like I need the RCA Male Stereo Audio cable end pieces. If this is correct, would you let me know please. All of this is for a 32 inch Smart TV which is the largest size which will fit the space. The picture is great, but the sound options are driving my audiophile ears crazy. I do see a way to get the TV audio into the amplifier and that is by the digital audio output (optical), but no such place appears on the Yamaha AS500. There is a single audio output hole on the back of the TV, but that is beyond my ancient experience. I dont see an audio input on the amplifier of one hole. Am I wrong? My laptop enlarged image of the back of the amplifier leaves a lot to be desired. You will be happy to know that there is no problem with my Sony CD/DVD player which was purchased from you. I will also use my B & O turntable and be able to play my vinyl records again. As I said, we are talking older or ancient!

A: This receiver offers binding posts that will accept bare wire speaker leads.

Q: 9. Can you hook up a equalizer to the Yamaha. A-s301

A: An equalizer cannot be connected to th amplifier. Preamplifier in and out ports or Tape Monitor ports would be necessary.

Q: 10. Can this as 801 yamaha pair goid with jbl l100 classic 4 ohms speakers?

A: Yes the Yamaha A-S801 Integrated Amplifier is directly compatible with the JBL L100 Classic bookshelf speakers.

[120 VAC, 60 Hz] I got this amp for a second set, but I like it so much that now is my primary option. Sounds better than an amp that is twice the price. Powerful enough to be unbearably loud in my big room. It sounds clear and has a very smooth top end. It is good with Triangle borea br03, but amazing with Klipsch rp160m. I always use a subwoofer, so can't comment how the bass would sound without. The volume level can't be seen, black on black. It doesn't bother me, but it might matter to some. And for the price of 350, just get it!

[21 x 17 x 8.5"] I was fortunate enough to purchase this amp on sale (249.95) just before Christmas and am very pleased with it. The audio performance is very good and it had all the features I needed including a phono input, several RCA audio inputs, digital inputs, a nice DAC and a very good headphone stage . I'm using a 20+ year old Philips CD player and playing FLAC audio files through 80's era Boston Acoustics A70 speakers. The amp has brought new life to these older components and delivers a terrific audio experience. The remote control is very solid and will operate other Yamaha components.
I do wish it had better visual options on the front panel to indicate volume level and input selection when in use. There are very small lights for each input, but they are almost impossible to read across a room. The volume dial does have a black line on it, but it is impossible to see from more than a few away.
Overall I'm very pleased with the A-S301. Great stereo performance at a great price. Paired with a good set of speakers or headphones, it provides a terrific audio experience.

[±0.5 dB] This is as good an amplifier for my LPs as I had had before!. The sound is richer and more powerful than my old amp (a great Nakamichi) and with headphones the sound is clear. Somebody pointed out that the lights on the amp are very small, and I agree. I marked the volume button with some Whiteout so I can see what level it is at. It happened that I switched from Phono to Line 2 to amplify the TV and the sound came on way too loud, because I hadn't checked the volume. Now, with the Whiteout on the volume button, I can see and adjust the level before I change function, and will never scare myself (or my wife) with the sudden very loud sound. The remote works perfectly! The delivery by B&H was extremely fast and the amp arrived safely - even faster than first indicated.

[2.0] I bought the Yamaha A-S301 to replace an aging 1998 Pioneer receiver. The Yamaha delivers more solid bass. Perhaps less treble, but less treble distortion. For example, you can distinguish between different crash or ride cymbals. Horn sections are very clear, without harshness. I listen mostly to CDs, so the optical input is nice.
I use efficient Klipsch R-820F tower speakers, so the Yamaha has plenty of headroom.

[24 lb] Old school integrated amp with digital inputs. That's a good thing. It gives me a feeling of quiet confidence.

It replaced an old Onkyo receiver that died. I bought an internet radio, so I didn't need a receiver. I use it in my bedroom stereo, so I don't need massive power; I doubt that I'll ever strain the 60 WPC power rating.

I'm not an audiophile, and it sounds just fine to me. I wish I could offer glowing flowery reviews, but this thing just sits there and works just fine. It just sort of exudes understated quality and, hopefully, reliability. I've only had it for about three weeks, but so far I'm more than satisfied.

[2.0] A week into this amplifier and I’m pleased with its performance
and value.  The A-S301 replaces a Denon PMA-600NE which I had -- briefly.  The main problem with the Denon was the dodgy motorized volume control.  Like the motorized volume control on the A-S301,
it rotates clockwise from about 7:00 to 5:00 either by hand or by using the remote.  The problems with the Denon were (1) it had almost no volume between 7:00 and about 8:30, and then the volume came on with a rush and (2) the steps using the remote were too coarse (an online review of a Marantz amplifier – same parent company – noted the same things).  I was curious how the Yamaha volume control would work, but I need not have worried.  I stuck a little orange dot on the volume knob and it was easy to tell that both the knob movement and the volume levels were aligned, and that the amplifier was capable of fine adjustment manually or with the remote.

The other nice feature about the A-S301 (and its siblings) is the loudness control.  I haven’t needed it much for contemporary CDs or FLAC files, but recently I got some FLACs and CDs of re-mastered Arturo Toscanini/NBC Symphony recordings from the early 1950s. These are mono, but adjusting both the volume and loudness greatly improved the listening experience.  Kudos to Yamaha for that feature at this price point.

I’m using a pair of Polk ES15 speakers, which is a combination

that several online reviews recommend.  I also have a Polk XT10 down-firing subwoofer. My living room is not large, and the Yamaha/Polk setup makes for a very good listening experience.

The only thing I miss from the Denon is the built-in Bluetooth for listening.  I like to play music from the speakers, and also use a pair of on-ear headphones around inside the house.  I still haven’t found a good solution for that, but it certainly wasn’t a deal breaker.

Taking all into consideration, and as others have noted, the A-S301 punches way above its weight.

[21 x 17 x 8.5"] An excellent receiver. More fidelity than I've had with any other except maybe the prior version of this model. Both deliver an awesome degree of sound quality even at lower volumes (the hallmark of an electronically high end system). It is, for all intents and purposes the same amplifier as the R-S500 - possibly improved a tad over that even. The fine tuning on tone control (loudness) is very responsive. You can fashion your music any way you like it.

[120 VAC, 60 Hz] This unit replaces a 15 year old top of the line Harmon Kardon receiver which decided to die. Even my old dance mix tapes from the 1980s sound incredible. I believe the S-301 delivers better sound quality overall than my old Harmon... the highs are crisp, the lows deep and rich. It performs as well as the S-801 in my media room. Thank you Yamaha, all my components will be Yamaha going forward.
