The Hoya 77mm R72 Infrared Filter - Perfect for Photographyis a specialized filter used for infrared photography with digital cameras and specialized infrared film. This nearly opaque filter blocks all visible light up to 720nm, enabling recording of subject matter and scenes that are not visible under normal conditions. Due to the nature of infrared photography, the filter factor for this filter is highly variable and depends largely on the ISO sensitivity in use and lighting conditions.

This filter is constructed from high-quality optical glass and is set in an aluminum filter ring to provide increased rigidity and prevention from filter jamming.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello, can I use this filter with my Canon EOS Rebel T5i?

A: there are some youtube videos on testing your sensory if it is responsive to IR by using a home device remote controller; a difficult lens to use as is very dense to light and hard to focus well; so far, my results are disappointing; good luck

Q: 2. Will this filter work with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Fuji XT-3?

A: Neither the Canon EOS 5D Mark II nor the FUJIFILM X-T4 Mirrorless Camera have a specified spectral sensitivity from the manufacturer. That being said, this can be used with either camera, though you will need to use longer exposure times. For better IR sensitivity you would need to have the camera sensors modified. In terms of fitting on a lens, this will depend on the specific lens you are using.

Q: 3. I was planning on shooting both in color and B&W in raw format and was wondering what type of a result i will get in color mode?

A: A RAW color image shot with an infrared filter will produce a yellow/red image with blue foliage.

Q: 4. Can you use this if your camera's internal sensor has already had an IR conversion?

A: Hi Bill-It did not work for my Canon 7D. It seems one needs different kind of camera or make a permanent conversion of the camera body to disable the built in capability of IR conversion. Subrata

Q: 5. will it work with a Pentax 645D?

A: mmmmI' don't think soThat camera is too new.The IR filters works better with older digital cameras like the Nikon D50, D70 and D80, D100 (2001 - 2006)

Q: 6. will this work on sony alpha cameras? i heard you need to modify the camera in order for this to work? I have a7s and a6500

A: I have not tried it on the camera.I have heard that you need to modify the filters on the sensor so that it only sees infrared light. The filter is very dark to the normal eye, but the film has no problem receiving the infrared. you would think that no light is getting through. Good like!

Q: 7. Is this compatible with Pentax K70?

A: The Hoya 62mm R72 Infrared Filter is compatible with the K70. As for results it will vary depending on settings and the scene/shot.

Q: 8. will this work on sony alpha cameras? i heard you need to modify the camera in order for this to work? I have a7s and a6500

A: The filter works perfectly without any changes to the camera, do you need to do some post processing and you can check on YouTube. I highly recommend the filter

Q: 9. Will this work on a Nikon 18-55mm DX VR lens?

A: No, the Hoya 77mm R72 Infrared Filter (B&H# HOIR7277) will not fit directly on a Nikon 18-55mm DX VR lens. Nikon has made many lenses of that description, and they require different sizes of filters. Some of them accept a 52mm filter, while others require a 55mm filter. Please see the number on the front of the lens next to the symbol that looks like a circle with a slash going through it. That is the correct filter size for your lens. If the number on your lens is 52 (i.e. 52mm) then the right size filter is the Hoya 52mm R72 Infrared Filter (B&H# HOIR7252): https://bhpho.to/39ZGP24 However, if that number is 55 (i.e. 55mm) then the filter you'll want is the Hoya 55mm R72 Infrared Filter (B&H# HOIR7255): https://bhpho.to/2Vv5c5qHowever, if that number is 55 (i.e. 55mm) then the filter you'll want is the Hoya 55mm R72 Infrared Filter (B&H# HOIR7255): https://bhpho.to/2Vv5c5q

Q: 10. how many stops of light should we compensate for with this filter?

A: We should compensate about 5-6 stops of light with the Hoya 62mm R72 Infrared Filter.

[Glass] Produces very good IR photos and screws on to the camera without binding and resistance. Easy to use and a valuable companion when the subject looks like it would be interesting in IR. There is enough visible transmission so that it is easy to get a good focus.

[0.175 lb] This filter works perfectly with my converted mirrorless camera. I was debating between and 590nm 'supercolor' or 720nm conversion of my camera. The 590 conversion provides dark blue skies and gold or white foliage. While a 720 conversion is closer to B&W with very dark skys and bright white foliage. Both are of interest. I decided on the 590 conversion and then bought this filter to try are create the look of 720 images. I am very pleased with the results. Now I can capture both wavelengths and get very high quality images.

[Glass] Having a blast experimenting with this!

[Aluminum] This is one of the few filters you can't identify without either a flashlight or reading the edge text: it looks like a deep, black/neutral density filter. A flashlight will show read looking through it.

Usually, you need to pre-focus and switch to manual before putting this filter on, to get focus where it needs to be. My R7 can figure out exposure with the filter on in daylight... at dusk, you gotta do the math, but it has nice effects.

[77 mm] I was a little concerned about how much IR light would pass through the in camera filter on my unconverted D610. I have obtained some very nice captures with the Hoya R72 at F8 ISO 100 and exposure times of 8 to 20 secs. There is enough visible light transmission for some color effects using LR and PS. This was a good purchase for my first foray into IR photography.

[0.175 lb] I have played around with my filter but being winter there isnt  any leaves on trees to make a big difference in the outcome. I have been taking water with old fishing houses and boat pictures. They look a lot better then B&W with a lot of depth and shadows but when spring comes and I get some living subjects like leaves I will know for sure :) I have been shooting in Monochrome so I dont have to take the saturation out later. I dont like editing much. I like to get it right the first time. Didnt have any clouds on this day of example :(

[Aluminum] This filter works well and as expected. Here's a quick how-to for folks brand new to the medium. There are many (more detailed) tutorials online, but if you just want to make your first image quickly, hopefully this will help.

What to expect:
With the 720 filter, images straight out of the camera will look dull orange and a glowing, bluish white. You can leave it as is, manipulate the colors to your liking, or process into stunning black & white.

SHOOTING
1. Set up. Because most visible light will be filtered out, you'll need to use a long exposure. A tripod is very useful here. (Or set your camera on something steady and secure.)

2. Compose. The viewfinder will be quite dark, so use Live View if your camera has it. If not, try composing and setting the focus before (carefully) screwing on the filter, then press the shutter.

3. Note: Shoot in RAW for the most flexibility. However, if you're just starting out and feel the process bogging you down, JPGs can still give fast, interesting results.

POST-PROCESSING
1. First, adjust the white balance of your RAW image to give the best contrast and color adjustment.

2. Apply any other creative editing you like.

Have fun!

[Aluminum] The R72 is my first foray into infrared, but so far, so good. The filter seems even throughout and the build quality is sound. No complaints.

[Glass] Well constructed. Easy to install. Fun to use and experiment with. Comes with a durable case. I use it on my Canon R6 with RF 24-105 L lens.
